(well, Shadow is a dangerous entity who is part dragon and the waist below is nothing but shadows and darkness. She attacked Lily and her parents, killing her father(who was a human), turning her mother(who was a witch) into stone, and injuring Lily badly. That's how Lily got the scars on her left eye. They go half vertical and half horizontal across her face. She's bullied for her scars as well. Ever since that day, Lily has been too scared to use her powers as she fears it might attract Shadow again, and she can't hide the fact that she is half human half witch. This happened way before Luz entered the Boiling Isles. That's only the climax of Lily's backstory. There's much more to her)
