Nettlepaw was laying in the corner of the clearing, looking down at a new ornate leaf pattern they had made. They were just placing the last leaf in the pile, when suddenly they heard footsteps nearby, and turned to face the approaching figure.

Hickorysmoke padded over, looking at the ornate leaf pattern "woah- can you teach me that..?" Hickory asked, tilting their head. Their ears perked. They loved ornate patterns like this.

Nettlepaw tilted their head as Hickorysmoke suddenly spoke to them.
They seemed.. a bit enthusiastic, but nice nonetheless. Yet what they said had confused them. Teach them.. what, exactly?
“Thank you..? But.. teach you.. what?” they questioned slowly.

”Oh.. well-“ Nettlepaw mewed, but they suddenly paused.
This thing was.. kind of personal to them. It helped them get all their feelings out of their brain by doing something fun. Did they really have to tell them?
Maybe.
If not, that might come off as rude, wouldn’t it?
Nettlepaw didn’t want to be rude.
So they sighed, before giving a small lopsided smile, part of their muzzle sagging downwards despite the rest of their expression.
“Er.. so.. what I.. do is..” they began, before shuffling closer to a bush they’d been plucking leaves off of to make their pattern.
“I look.. up.. at the sky.. and look at.. the clouds for.. a bit.” they mumbled.
This didn’t make sense, but it was their creative process.
They peered upwards at the clouds, admiring the fluffy white billows for a moment before turning back to face Hickorysmoke.
“And then my.. head starts.. being mean. Like.. ‘wow, Nettlepaw.. you’re being.. really.. counterproductive.. maybe you.. should never be.. a warrior..’. And since that’s.. not nice.. I rip off.. a.. bunch of.. random leaves.. and then I.. remember that’s not.. nice.. so then I put them.. on the ground.. and I start.. seeing shapes in.. the groups.. I put them.. in. It makes me.. want to move.. them around.. into pretty.. patterns.” Nettlepaw explained shyly, before looking back at their previous leaf pattern, then over to the warrior whom they were just barely towering over as they sat there.
“So.. there.” the apprentice concluded, blinking awkwardly.

Hickorysmoke was listening intently, their eyes softening at neetlepaws words, sighing. "I understand that pain- where your mind tells you things that you can't understand- things that you hope aren't true." Hickorymsmoke nodded, sitting down with their golden eyes softly tilting their head.

This was.. pretty bad.
Hickorysmoke thought they could just.. make it all about feelings instead of the craft?
This was silly.

“Well, it’s.. not really about.. that.” they murmured, looking away in embarrassment.

Hickorysmoke shrugged, looking up at the clouds. "Sorry, get lost in my own mind sometimes, just kinda spew anything out." they murmured, looking a bit embarrassed. "sorry-"

Ok so as much as Mudhound REALLY wanted this and knew Quackpaw wanted this and there wasnt anything wrong with swaps because it wasny Brackenclaws fault there was a personality missmatch it still hurt. It was never good as a mentor to feel you failed or wasnt enough for an apprentice, Silverpaws situation still smarted bad when the tripod recalled it, and rationality rarely had much to do with it. You could know it wasnt your fault and still feel like it was. Or hurt and disappointed and all those bad emotions.


So one way or another even in the best case scenario this could hurt, though Mudhound was gonna do their best to explain it nicely.



But they really wanted their little Quackers theirs officially so it was happening regardless.


Padding up to their fellow hornet in the clearing with a grin and a friendly tail wave the tripod wondered if they'd ever even really talked to him before or even seen him since the quarantine camp.... disaster before talking "Heya Brackenclaw, howre you doing today? Happy for the warming weather, Im looking forward to flowers for SURE!
