He glanced at Vixen and smiled gently.
"Sorry," he apologized. "Just a bad dream." He looked up at the rock roof of the den and sighed. "I suppose I should tell you why there are two packs."

Vixen had heard stories of the two packs when she was younger from an older wolf, her grandfather (her grandmother died), who actually cared for her. She had forgotten the names, but now that she realized she was apart of one, she remembered the other one was... Fire Pack, wait, it was Blaze Pack. She never knew why there were two though, or the reason that kept them apart. 'Well, I'm going to find out,' she thought, gazing at the alpha intently, waiting.

"There uses to be five packs," he began. "They all thrived, and helped each other in times of need." Leaf winced. "Fire Pack was one of them. They loathed the others, and got Frost Pack on their side by spreading rumors and lies about the other three."

The alpha shifted. "Fire Pack and Frost Pack joined forces and attacked the others during a Great Meeting, where there was supposed to be a truce. But the two opposing packs broke the truce." A memory flashed through his head, filled with terror. "Stream Pack, Dusk Pack, and Rock Pack were no match for the others. They had been training to fight harder and be faster. So we lost."

He hesitated, then went on. "Blaze, leader of the Fire Pack at that moment, created one huge pack and called it Blaze Pack, after himself. It was several moons later when Frost Pack realized what a terrible mistake they had made. Blaze treated the Stream Pack, Dusk Pack, and Rock Pack wolves as he would prisoners. And that's what we were: prisoners. He made us fight his own wolves for his own amusement."

Leaf's eyes hardened. "But the prisoners rebelled. They gathered every wolf that wanted to leave and created an escape plan. Some of the Frost Pack wolves wanted to leave, and the only wolves who stayed were the ones who did it out of fear and cowardice.

"One night, the prisoners suddenly attacked. Even though they were outnumbered, they put up a fight. They lost, and were scattered. They found each other again, though, and joined together. They voted me as alpha, and because I was originally from the Dusk Pack, they decided to call the pack Falling Dusk."

Vixen gazed at him with wonder. 'Grandfather never told me this!' She thought. "So you can say that this whole story was fueled by lies?" The pup asked. This whole story angered her. It wasn't fair. 'Blaze will learn his lesson!' She assured to herself.

"I suppose so," Leaf sighed. "And it's all because of jealousy and anger and ambition." He glanced at Vixen, seeming to know what she was thinking.
"And don't go nosing around Blaze's camp," he warned. "It'd kill me if a member of the Falling Dusk got taken by him."

"I would never. I promise," Vixen assured. She didn't want to get taken by a savage like Blaze. She couldn't imagine what he would do to her. 'I'd make a wonderful punching bag,' she thought.

"Good," he murmered. "Now. I need to go back to sleep. Let's pray to the spirits that Blaze isn't planning an attack." He lay back down. Within moments, he was snoring softly.

"Indeed," she whispered as Leaf lied back down. Vixen took a slow yawn and lay against his flank, feeling the rise and fall of his breathing. It calmed her, and soon enough sleep crawled back to her.

Leaf vaguely felt Vixen, but it wasn't enough to keep him awake. This time, his dreams were peaceful.

Willow crept in the shadows. She padded toward the light until it was almost blinding. It called to her, just as it had every day of her life here. Freedom. Another hopeless escape attempt, but this time she had thought it out thoroughly. Or so she thought. As she took a step to the entrance and prepared to run, she heard a wolf behind her and shrank down. Looking up at this wolf in fear, Willow was frozen on the spot.

Vixen dreamed virtually the opposite of what she had dreamed before. Wolves looked away from her as she caught their eyes. They ignored her when she tried to talk to them. They would pad away as soon as she was nearby. In a snap, the whole camp was empty; the young wolf was alone, lost in her life. It wasn't the scariest of dreams, but that meant it wasn't so hard on her, so she wouldn't immediately wake up, meaning she had to endure the great vastness of it all. She shivered and slightly whimpered in her sleep even though Leaf's radiation warmed her. She believed she was alone in this difficult world, and no one could change that for her.
