Vixenpaw had some doubts that Cliffheart of all cats could, but being polite he simply didn't say anything if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

Hawkpaw nodded, satisfied with the answer he’d been given. He hated seeing his clan mates in a bad mood. No one liked having bad days but they always came anyway. Even if the black and white tom himself wasn’t a particularly huge fan of socialising, he was always willing to help if someone was indeed having a bad day. Unless they wanted to be alone of course. Although they would have to tell the apprentice that they wanted some time in solitude. While the tom might be very intelligent, more intelligent than most of the cats in his clan, he wasn’t so intelligent when it came to friendship and emotions. He often struggled to correctly identify emotions and wasn’t very good with them. Perhaps he’d spend a day sometime talking to different types of cats and studying their emotions. He would willingly socialise without a hesitation if it meant he got to learn and examine something new.

“Nowhere in particular. I just thought a run in the forest would clear my thoughts for a decent amount of time,” Hawkpaw responded. With so many complicated thoughts constantly rushing through his mind, the tom needed a break from all that every now and again. It could be a lot to take in at times and occasionally he just needed to get away from it. He needed to stop thinking about so many things and let his mind rest for a bit. Or else it would get too tired and he would never be able to think of things that matched his intelligence levels. Hawkpaw didn’t lie at average when it came to intelligence and if anything, he found it extremely hard to focus on easy things. He could answer easy questions without even thinking about it. But they didn’t interest him in the way that more advanced things did. He liked to have his mind busy at work and was much more curious about harder things. He struggled to concentrate on things that didn’t interest him. But he wasn’t the only one. That happened to everyone.

As the tom awaited her own response, he used the moment to wonder why her tone was flat compared to his bright and cheerful tone. Hawkpaw might not be very good with emotions, however he at least knew that a pleasant tone of voice would immediately make you likeable amongst most cats. He didn’t mind using a happy tone all the time, but it could be a challenge at times. It wasn’t always easy to be cheerful and if he were to just speak without the forced cheerful tone, he would be quite dull.
Clear his thoughts, so something was on his mind, or many things were. Those whose heads were always empty would find no need to clear them further after all, right? This is what Ebonypaw imagined at least, having never been particularly good at finding the inner meanings to most reactions on others' parts.
At least that was what made sense to her. Ebonypaw herself often found herself in the woods, climbing into the trees because this cleared her mind when she had too much to think about, or if she wanted to – for a short amount of time – think of simply nothing at all.

She found herself opening to him for some reason. Something about him was just... Well, more than others' in some way. It made her feel like he was okay.
"You need to clear your mind?"
She closed off quickly again after hearing her own voice, which had grown soft and almost timid in nature, raising slightly as well. It had been a long time since she had said something in that way to another being and it almost frightened her.
Weak. She hissed at herself mentally, and felt herself slip back towards closed off, forcefully calm and unconcerned.
Ebonypaw always used a harder, darker voice when she spoke than what came naturally. It fed her need to keep closed off, to seem less kit-like than she was.

For a moment during that time she had opened up to him, and she eyed him with curiosity behind her hardened exterior.
She didn't usually want to do that.

Cool Re: SkyClan Territory

Jigglefoot wandered around the territory, his short legs making it difficult to maintain a quick pace while going over logs and rocks. His ears pinned back as he continued, smelling the ground around him for signs of prey.

Cucumberpickle saw a rabbit and dropped into a hunter's crouch then sprinted after it driving it towards Jigglefoot. Rabbits are a team effort.

Wow, that really hurt," the molly sarcastically responded with a shake of her head. "Disappointing, really," she tagged on a few heartbeats later. Then, she settled down right along the bank, her eyes fixated on the water as it rushed by to reach her destination. Where that was, the feline didn't know. She longed to follow the stream to find out, see new places, but she was stuck to Skyclan for the time being. Of course, Marble could leave the clan whenever she wanted, and the she-cat wasn't quite sure why she was staying as long as she was. She did have an apprentice, but Grousestar could appoint someone else to mentor Bouncepaw. But then she'd feel as if she was letting the little furball down; she hated to admit it, but she did care for the young cat. He grew on you, when you were forced to spend so much time with him. She wondered if she could ever grow to enjoy spending time with the tom who was currently bugging her, but quickly shook the idea away. No, there was no way. Not when Palmettoleaf asked so many questions, not when she felt so uncomfortable around him, and not with those eyes. They drew her in, and that was dangerous. Captivating eyes such as his, combined with that smile he always wore- that was a recipe for disaster. He could easily fool any cat, make Marblestrike believe he was such a nice tom who cared so much for his friends and family...

The she-cat shook her head again, realizing she had almost missed what the tom had said to her question. Life? Just life in general had him happy? Well, she guessed his life was much better than hers. The question spun on her made Marblestrike narrow her eyes along with the other warrior's, her fur bristling as she immediately went on the defensive. "Oh... just life, I guess," she mimicked, even taking on a different tone of voice as she repeated Palmettoleaf's answer to her question. Ironically enough, this answer was one she could have given herself, without needing to mock the tom's words. Life did cause her to be unhappy, after all. She just hoped he would take her answer as a taunt, as most of her other retorts had been, as opposed to taking it as a true answer. She was becoming more and more uncomfortable under all his questions... didn't he ever stop pestering others? Hadn't he realized that a cat like her wouldn't want him asking so much about her? She didn't really think he was a dumb cat, so perhaps he had some other motive for all his questions.

Why had she even agreed on going out into the territory in the first place? She should have turned down his offer, just like she did to any cat that did talk to her- which was a very few amount. Then she wouldn't be in this position, having to bat away every question that came her way, trying to figure out how to answer while still being vague enough. So far, Marblestrike didn't feel like she was giving him as little as she wanted to; she had given him too much information, told him too much about herself. And now, he obviously wasn't going to stop asking. At first she hoped answering a few questions would leave him sated, that he wouldn't keep rolling them out, but he had and she didn't know how to make him quit it. She doubted telling Palmettoleaf to stop would actually make him do so. Heck, he'd just ask her why she wanted him to stop. Her bitter glare turned onto the water, watching it with envy as it swirled away. She'd like to do that very much right now. Just what allowed the tom to ask her such personal questions? Realistically, the molly guessed that what he was asking her wasn't really too personal, but for her it was. She hadn't even told the cats she trusted the most some of this that he was prying about, so what made the infuriatingly handsome tom think she would tell him of all cats?

She was very happy about the subject change. Food, she could talk about food- now it wasn't so hard talking about that, wasn't it? "Not necessarily," Marble responded. "I'm sure they have other stuff I could eat. They definitely couldn't force me to eat that stuff." Her nose crinkled yet again at the thought; she really, really didn't like fish. She was just fine watching them rather than eating them. "I'd sooner eat frog than that junk," she huffed, though she had never eaten frog to be able to properly compare the two. She had seen it once, back with her family, but at the time of being a very judgmental young cat had turned her nose up at the creature and refused to try it.

The molly's face grew grim at the tom's playful words, choosing not to respond with what she was thinking. Would she even have wanted to be saved by Palmettoleaf, was the question she had in her head. Marblestrike quickly pushed that dark thought down, knowing that way of thinking was no good. Deep down, the splotched cat knew she would never resort to that, but she didn't like how often similar thoughts had crossed her mind. She couldn't really blame herself for thinking this way, but she wanted them to go away. She was angry, and bitter, but she didn't want to feel sadness. No, that was a way worse feeling that she absolutely loathed. That, along with fear. Those two emotions she could easily say were the worst. The ones that she tried to feel as little as possible, and she was proud to say very little could make her scared. She didn't fear death, or danger or battles. Definitely not the darkness, either. All things that many others were afraid of. No, this seemingly strong she-cat who was so rude to others, pushing them away... she was afraid of other cats, and of being tricked. It was so easily to be fooled, after all, and that was one of her biggest fears. Never again, she had promised herself. Never again would she let another trick her the way she had been before.
Huh. Now she was going to mock him? That wasn't something Palmettoleaf took lightly, but he would let it slide for the sake of keeping his own dignity. Might as well go out with his head up, right? Glancing at her with his startlingly green optics, the feline shook his head the smallest bit. "Someone needs to do something about that attitude problem of yours," Palmettoleaf told her with a short laugh. It was true - she had quite the attitude. While he might be somewhat annoyed by that, he figured that hey - he had wanted to get to know her, know what she was like, and she didn't appear to be hiding anything. Every cat had their secrets. It wasn't like the tom was expecting Marblestrike to pour her heart out to him. That was the last thing he would expect from this cat, and his green eyes flashed again as he watched her. "Attitude can be a good thing though. Maybe you should start learning how to use it in that way," Palmettoleaf suggested with the smallest of smiles. Even though he was pretty sure she was just going to laugh him off with an 'oh yeah, sure' or 'what are you talking about?,' at least he had tried.

Part of him was fairly sure that Marblestrike was just lonely. Maybe she wanted friends and just wasn't sure how to get them. Or perhaps, someone had hurt her before. Was that the case? Had someone hurt the pretty she cat, and now she was scared? There was never "no reason" to be putting on a tough act. There was always something. Always. There had to be, for never before had the multicolored tom met a cat who was that way 'just because.' He was about to open his maw to comment again, but then seemed to think better of it. Someone hurt you, didn't they? The feline wanted to say, but he knew better. He knew that was only going to lead to unforeseen anger and having her lash out at him in a more vicious way. Well, he wouldn't take that. A purr rumbled in his throat at the sudden subject change. Even if there were something wrong, other then 'just life,' as she had put it - same as his own words - she wasn't going to let him see it. It seemed the only thing she wanted to do was keep herself safe. Though, didn't everybody? Even Palmettoleaf, with all his thoughts of opening up and being friendly and making friends with everyone, had some caution in his mind. And no - he hadn't been hurt before. Not like, with a traumatic event of his past, anyways. The only way that the tom had ever been hurt was physically - like, in a battle. Which was to be expected. And no, it wasn't even by a friend - it was by an enemy. Palmettoleaf laughed a little at Marblestrike's words, and a slight purr came from the tom.

"At least you wouldn't have to worry about scales with a frog. Fish scales could get stuck in your throat - I bet they really hurt, too," The multicolored tom mewed with the slightest of smiles in her direction. It probably would hurt to get a fish scale stuck in your throat. After all, they were sharp, weren't they? Just thinking of the silvery - or sometimes dark, or brightly colored creatures made his throat hurt. Wouldn't it taste weird? Palmettoleaf thought so, but there was no way to know for sure before he actually tasted it. And, that was one food that he wasn't planning on tasting. Living in SkyClan all his life, frog was another thing that he hadn't tasted before. It wasn't really a "traditional" prey of the Clan, and so Palmettoleaf had never felt like bringing it back.

"Have you had frog before?" He asked, suddenly curious again. Of course, when was he not curious? It was almost as though curiousity played the biggest part of the tom's personality, as though he were normally curious. He thought about a lot of things, honestly. Right now, he was working on the puzzle of Marblestrike. What had her past been like? She hadn't grown up in the Clan, so where had she grown up? Why had she joined the Clan? Where were her family, where were her friends from outside the Clan? Had she eaten frog? Why was she so determined to keep up this, this exterior? Didn't she think she would be happier if she did have more friends? How come it seemed so difficult for her to let her guard down? Palmettoleaf was determined that, by the end of a few moons, he would have the answer to all of these questions. A few moons might seem like a long time, but... in reality it was nothing less then an eternity.

Yeah, patience might be one of Palmettoleaf's personality traits, but - not as much as it appeared outwardly. He tended to get impatient just like everyone else. And right now, he certainly was... he didn't want to have to wait to solve this mystery. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now. As in, as soon as possible. And he would get them... as soon as possible.

She glared up at the daughter she failed to understand, feeling betrayed and unloved. Ebonyfrost didn't seem so sure about the trust she had in her own mother, but why? Ebonyfrost recoiled as if she had been slashed across the nose. Indeed, it felt like she had been.
She stared in disbelieving shock at her mother for a moment, unmoving, unfeeling for a moment before she broke from her silence.
She bared her teeth, and flattened her ears against her skull.
"Shut up!" She hissed, voice dark. Ebonyfrost felt hot tears behind her eyes as she began to cry. Not wanting her mother to see this show of weakness, she turned and bolted off in the opposite direction.

And right now, he certainly was... he didn't want to have to wait to solve this mystery. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now. As in, as soon as possible. And he would get them... as soon as possible.
Though what Palmettoleaf said wasn't meant to be offensive- Marble could tell by the small laugh that accompanied his words- she still took it that way. "No one's going to be fixing anything about me," she spoke angrily, tail lashing once more. Why couldn't the molly ever sit around and joke with another cat, relax a bit instead of always being on the defensive, always waiting to find out something bad about the cat she was spending her time with? Sometimes she wished she could- and, she guessed, she did goof off slightly with a select few, but definitely not with anyone she had just met. Trust didn't come easily for her, not when it had been torn to shreds by the one who should have always been a safe cat to give it to. So instead of worrying about more betrayal, the splotched cat pushed others away. If she really thought about what she was doing- which she didn't- then she could come to the conclusion that she did still worry about being hurt by others, being broken down once more to nothing. But she hadn't realized this, or at least refused to acknowledge it. This still seemed like a better, safer option. Already hostile, the she-cat was quick to respond to the other warrior's next statement. "And what's that supposed to mean?" She all but snarled, blue eyes flashing up at green ones. Use her attitude in another way? She'd use it the way she wanted to! This cat definitely didn't take kindly to being told how to go about her life, and she would make sure this tom would know that. She was perfectly capable of making her own decisions and of looking after herself- which was her main concern. Herself, and no other cat. Of course, she cared about her best friends and her apprentice, but if it came down to it Marblestrike's main concern was her own well-being. She certainly held no sort of loyalty to Skyclan, not at all. She viewed this as a good thing, even. If she didn't feel attached to the clan, then if something bad happened there would be nothing keeping her from leaving. She could go without worrying about anything happening to herself.

She watched as the tom opened his mouth to say something and narrowed her eyes in a warning gesture. Something told her she wouldn't like what Palmettoleaf had to say- probably because she wasn't liking much of what came from his mouth. When he seemingly decided not to speak, she assumed that he was taking her warning glare for once and raised her head slightly in a triumphant manner. That's right, I don't want to hear what you have to say about my life. With a satisfied hum, Marble looked back away from the tom, this time turning her attention to the other bank. Still, while being here, she obviously had to look out for danger- what was stopping a fox from entering Skyclan territory, after all. Or, a Dusk Syndicate cat who simply could accept their previous loss and came looking for another fight? So when she spent time out here alone, she had gotten into a habit of scanning her surroundings periodically to check for any dangers. Perhaps she had adopted this habit even before joining Skyclan, during her younger days of traveling alone. It was definitely a good way of thinking, in her mind. A cat should always be aware of their surroundings, that way they would be ready for anything that came their way. After all, that was how you survived the longest- it was how back at her old territory, her family would occasionally encounter old loners still living strongly. Cats just as old as the elders in Skyclan, still hunting for themselves and fighting too. She planned on being one of those cats one day; even if she had dark thoughts from time to time, she still wanted to live her life to the fullest. Then, she could go to the Afterlife and be relieved from the worries of life. No, this she-cat didn't plan on going to Starclan. She supposed that it could exist, that it probably did, but she had grown up learning about the Afterlife rather than Starclan as clan born cats did, so she knew that would be where she would reside.

"Well, luckily I haven't had a scale stuck in my throat." The molly hadn't eaten fish enough to encounter that problem, and she didn't plan on eating more fish any time soon so that problem should never be one for her. From the corner of her eyes, Marblestrike caught the tom's small smile but didn't bother returning it. She normally didn't give such gestures, rarely giving them to even her closer friends. She just acted indifferent to most things that were said, or replied sarcastically. Or, angrily- all three reactions she guessed were pretty usual for her. Obviously acting that way didn't make Palmettoleaf the happiest cat, but did she care? No, not really. Of course, she didn't want to be a bully, but she didn't view this as bullying at all. Simply as being rude and a tad mean. But in her opinion, she wasn't being mean without reason. To her she had good cause to react in the ways she was doing so, but perhaps others didn't think so as well.

"No," Marble answered the tom's question curtly, mentally praising herself for the short answer. Yes, that was not giving him much- no mention of the fact that her family would eat them, no mention of her old life at all actually. Just answering his question and nothing more. That was the way she should be responding to all his questions, and how she normally did to any other cats' inquiries. She just couldn't place a paw on the exact reason why she hadn't been doing so before with Palmettoleaf, why she seemed to have to be very on top of her responses around this tom. Maybe to the other cat it seemed that her walls were firmly up, but compared to how she was with others, the molly definitely seemed to be having trouble keeping her guard up around him. That was dangerous, and bad. She needed to be on the tips of her paws, ready to dash at any second- and instead she was lounging, slipping off her hold of her guard. That was bad, she needed to hop right back up and be prepared once more, and she was determined to do so from now on.

[oml sorry for the late reply, and I'm going to just pretend that this happens before all the drama in Cliff's life that way he's not just randomly super depressed]

Cliffheart took a stand in the open clearing in the middle of the woods. The sun filtered down into the clearing, making some late-to-evaporate dew sparkle on the grass. The birds chirped around the two, and the dusty tom just stood there. He gazed at his apprentice, who seemed to have taken notice of his malformed leg, but he had gotten used to the stares he received. "Alright Vixenpaw, first I'll teach you the hunting crouch, which I'm sure you began to practice as a kit. At least most do, and some even have it perfected by apprentice hood. We'll see how you do though. Now, before I demonstrate the proper position and help correct you, show me your best assumption of the position." He instructed, his pale green optics lingering on the feline.

Vixenpaw nodded and dropped into a correct, but sloppy hunter's crouch, his hind legs were too far away, his tail was drooping, his front paws were splayed out and he head was upward.
