Sunpaw padded into the elders den. Might as well so something useful ,she thought. "anyone want freshkill", she said hoping they would say yes. Maybe they'll tell me a story like my mother did ,she thought. It was sunhigh and her mentor let her have a break from apprentice work but Sunpaw liked to busy herself.

Gorsebark

Gorsebark sat, listening stoically, the sun catching glimpses of his fur and warming his face. He cleared his throat with a loud cough. The tom looked at the kit warmly. A small ball welled in his throat, but he quickly dismissed it. This was no time for self pity. “I’m sure our fine leader will have you apprenticed soon.” Thinking for a moment, Gorsebark recalled his apprentice ceremony; what he wouldn’t give to go back and feel that sense of accomplishment and duty.

Taking a quick glance at the young cat, he meowed gruffly, “You’ll be a fine warrior young man.” Focusing his attention on the subject, he then turned and said, “What was it you wanted to help with?”

The affirmation took Whistlekit by surprise; he knew it probably didn't mean anything, that the elder would say the same to anyone, but he felt warm inside all the same. At the question, he once more offered, "If you're hungry, I can fetch you something from the freshkill pile, or if your nest needs cleaning, or — or anything you need done." The more he talked to Gorsebark, the more he wanted to prove himself to the tom, or help him, or... something. He wrapped his tail tightly around his paws as he waited anxiously for a response.

Sunpaw blinked in suprise. She hadn't even noticed the kit. She carefuly padded over and gave him a sniff. She thought for a second. "Oh hi Whistlekit". Of course it was Whistlekit she had never seen any kits with a pelt like that other than his before. "I can grab some moss for you to change the bedding with" Sunpaw zipped out of the elders den to grab some moss before he could even reply.

Whistlekit blinked bemusedly after the apprentice. That was strange... He tried to remember her name. Something to do with daytime and warmth and light, he thought... He glanced back at Gorsebark, wondering if he even needed the bedding changed or if the apprentice had perhaps overstepped.

Sunpaw dashed back into the elders den with as much moss as she could carry. "Um",she mewed around the moss, "If you need it if you want. I can put it back." She hoped not. she was happy to change the bedding with Whistlekit. It would be nice., she thought.

"Thanks," Whistlekit murmured. He felt a bit unbalanced knowing the apprentice knew his name but he couldn't quite place hers. "Um. Would you want to help?" he asked. He had never been shown how to change bedding officially, still not having been apprenticed. "If — I mean, if it isn't too much trouble, of course."

"Yes I would love too", Sunpaw mewed happily with a little bounce. She paused for a moment "Oh sorry, I'm Sunpaw. You-um y-you aaare Whistlekit right?" "Sunpaw stammered nervousely fidgeting with her forepaws"

He felt relieved to know her name. To her question, he confirmed, "Yeah, that's me." He ducked his head. "Thanks for helping... I haven't learned to do this properly yet."
