midnightsun trotted after mudslide, keeping to himself in respect to the overall bitey approach the enforcer seemed to take to any and all duties. getting snapped at by the shiney elites newest member surely wouldnt be a good look. once they arrived at their destination, mudslide made quick work of seperating him from the apprentice and just going off in their own direction, leaving the chimera tom to his own. what were they even supposed to look for again? seemed like the cold had stumbled more than just his mismatched paws. the memory returned quickly and with ease though, focussing on chickweed for now.
what had sleepysunrise said? sprawling plant or something like that. probably. whisker brows furrowed in concentration while his pale tongue poked out from beneath mismatched fur and the tom closely eyed the ground before him. nothing nothing and more nothing for a good while. every once in a while pausing to crane his neck, trying to catch a glance of mudslides pale fur, it was convenient how large the she cat was. easy to spot for sure.

once he actually came across some plants he suspected were chickweed it started off promising. a sturdy web of thin stalks relatively easy to tear from the frozen ground. that had been deceiving to the highest degree and midnightsun quietly cursed to himself as the following two attempts ended in crumbling herbs.

Following Mudslide and Midnightsun to Evergreen Grotto, Nightpaw looked around the unfamiliar place. If he had been here before, he didn’t remember it. Although he was about to go off on his own again looking for this the enforcer's command, Nightpaw followed along beside her. As Mudslide picked up this 'chickweed' plant, Nightpaw watched carefully to know what he was looking for. Picking up the scent, he started looking for some nearby.
[Nightpaw rolls 15!]
Coming across a few, he picked four of them out, although one of them didn’t seem to be in the best condition, so he reckoned Sleepysunrise wouldn’t want it. Taking the three he had managed to find, he turned to Mudslide once again. "Uhh…what's the other herb again?"

Coming across a few, he picked four of them out, although one of them didn’t seem to be in the best condition, so he reckoned Sleepysunrise wouldn’t want it. Taking the three he had managed to find, he turned to Mudslide once again. "Uhh…what's the other herb again?"
Marbled ears turned towards Nightpaw, maw filled with stalks of chickweed. "Marigold." She said gruffly, quiet mew muffled by the herbs in her jaw. Speaking of, she should probably start to snag that herself. Icy gaze flicked to whatever herbs Nightpaw was carrying, offering him a light nod before trotting off. The sooner she got out of the cold, the happier she'd be.
Her gaze searched for Midnightsun as she glanced over her shoulder, and once she found him, her look was nothing more than acknowledging. She would've preferred if Nightpaw followed her, but she honestly wouldn't have carried if he didn't.
Since marigolds were bright they weren't exactly hard to find, even if they were powdered in snow, orange was bright and attention grabbing like the wings of a monarch butterfly. Multicoloured paws paused at a stalk. She couldn't help but think it odd, seeing how flowers tended to be bright and inviting. She was sure they had a predator of some kind that was attracted by their scents and hues, wouldn't such bright saturation be a blunder to them?
Maybe she was thinking too hard about it...
[mudslide rolled an 18! slightly damaged...]
She'd have to admit, it was unwise of her grabbing a nearly wilted flower. She wasn't exactly sure what marigold was used for, but she doubted they'd miss a couple of petals.
[+1 marigold]
The spotted warrior clung to shadow like a second pelt. She would've been undetectable if it wasn't for the crunch of snow underneath her paws, but she wasn't hunting at the moment, or trying to sneak up on plants of all things. After more searching than she would've liked, another plume of orange yellows cornered her vision and she paused. Mudslide shook the snow off her paws before beelining towards the herb. She only had so much space left, so she'd better make this count.
[mudslide rolled a 14! slightly damaged...]
Yup, same issue. As she plucked up the plant, some petals fell with the sudden jerk. Oh well, probably wasn't an issue. Mudslide then turned to the rest of the group. She wasn't sure about everycat else, but she was done here and ready to get her cold tail home.
still muttering to himself, midnightsun moved on but not before critically eyeing the pale frost clinging to his dark paws. curse leafbare. why couldnt it be greenleaf again already. with a huff and aggressive shake of his right forepaw, the warrior got back to nosing around the few green-ish spots around in search for herbs. chickweed hadnt really worked all too well so he decided to try his luck with marigold. that was something he had actually seen more than once which was surely a plus in finding and retrieving it successfully. tail swinging from side to side with every step, the warrior left fur smudged pawprints on the soft frost and snow, leaping over a small stream before finally coming across something that couldve been a marigold once upon a time...?
the orange was still vibrant against the white backdrop of frost and snow but it didnt look anything like the marigold he had seen before. not large flowers made up of ruffled leaves, more like a sad crumpled up mess like you stepped on the leaves and tried to put them back together..and failed. the chimera tom shrugged to himself, moving closer to try and catch some of its scent.
by his uneducated opinion, it was marigold, if it was usable was a different story. and decidedly not one he would be telling.
[ 19, 17, 2 ]
depite the horrible look of this, the warrior succeeded in harvesting two previously large flowerheads before leaving the rest of the group crumpling in the wind, too frostbitten to save.

Nightpaw nodded at Mudslide's answer. "Marigold, got it." Turning then to look for the orangish flower, it couldn’t be that difficult! After walking for a short while, Nightpaw found two flowers, or at least he thought they were the right plants. They looked the part.
[Nightpaw rolls a 14!]
He tried to pick out one of the plants, but couldn’t get it to detach. Rolling his eyes in annoyance, Nightpaw tried to pull it with all his strength. With a snap, he went flying backwards, having taken the flower successfully at the cost of making a fool of himself. He nervously glanced to see if Mudslide or Midnightsun had seen his fall, that would be pretty embarrassing! Luckily they didn’t seem to be around though. Brushing himself off, Nightpaw looked around for them, not wanting to return behind like last time. The icy wind sent a chill up his spine, and once again he wished he had longer fur. Finding Mudslide and Midnightsun, he padded over with them with his collection of herbs.
with his frankly miserable amount of herbs secured between his teeth, midnightsun made his way back towards his two patrol mates. "you two ready? its miserable out here" the warrior enquired, taking no note of the fact that he was neither the patrol leader nor mudslides superior in pushing the two towards going back to camp. they'd been out here for long enough in his opinion anyway.
despite his decently thick pelt, wet paws wasnt really a activity midnight enjoyed indulging in. and they got what they wanted, mudslide moreso than him but still.
It was official. She'd been here far too many times.
Mudslide heeded Emberpaw's inability to hunt with caution, offering no retaliation when Cloverpaw offered to hunt for him. She didn't mind, and she didn't really care. As long as something was caught.
Her brain was getting quite tired, going to the same location over and over and over again. It was like being confined to camp, allowed to go nowhere except here. This would be her... One two many runs in this area. And she wanted no part in it. But she was here anyways, stuck in the mushy mush that was Evergreen Grotto.
Oh she hated it here. Hated the mush underneath her paws, hated how the cold was hard to shake, hated her building anxiety, hated how she'd rather be somewhere much more visually interesting.
She turned back to her patrol, a half of which had been late... Or was it a quarter? Hm... Her brain would give her back the information (hopefully). She noticed how Cloverpaw was half blinded, but she figured that wouldn't be an issue, especially since she offered to teach Emberpaw. Her icy gaze flicked between the two of them. "Together go." She then allowed herself to drift over to Greenapple. "Follow." She rasped, before heading for the easiest thing she could.
A mouse. A thin one at that. Well... She wasn't asking for a miracle.
[mudslide rolled a 9! fumble...]
Maybe she should've asked for that miracle.
Something so thin was probably on the verge of death anyways, it would certainly end up in somecat's stomach, or something. No big deal, nope, she definitely wasn't getting worked up about this, (can you hear the sarcasm?) so she padded on, her expression veiled by a blanket of neutrality.
Sooner or later, her ears caught onto the shuffling of a jay. She unsheathed her claws and readied herself to pounce.
[mudslide rolled a 13! catch successful!]
[+1 bluejay]
Securing her catch in her jaws, she kept low to the ground, scanning her area. Despite the thick and chilling fog, she was able to catch the silhouette of a bushy tail. Without a second thought, she crept forward and leapt after it.
[mudslide rolled a 3! fumble...]
She nearly broke her nose, scrambling on the frosted roots of a cedar tree. She blinked, surprised to find nothing at her paws. Darn... Another dud. She hoped her patrol mates were more successful than she was. Sooner or later, another rodent came into view. A mouse. She couldn't tell if it was the same one as before.

Ach, finally. Emberpaw felt like they had been waiting all day before the last member of their patrol showed up. The apprentice tossed Cloverpaw a glance as she offered to teach him, brow furrowing. Emberpaw would much rather an experienced warrior teach him how to hunt, as that made the most sense, right? What if this apprentice hadn't mastered the techniques, and by teaching Emberpaw, instilled bad habits on him? But Emberpaw wouldn't rock the boat, and it seemed Mudslide--whom Emberpaw would have preferred--was already off hunting. Great. Well, Emberpaw wasn't going to choose ignorance over knowledge, so the young apprentice looked at Cloverpaw. "Please teach me. Fast. I would like to hunt."
greenapple, she/her, 46 moons
shadowclan warrior
a dappled ginger and black she-cat with bright green eyes.
So Emberpaw did not know how to hunt. That did make sense, the apprentice was especially young. She was still kit age, Greenapple was sure.
Greenapple dipped her head as well when Emberpaw asked to be taught, which was meant to be a yes, though they might not've seen the motion. When Cloverpaw eventually joined them, Greenapple was happy to see the elder apprentice willing to share her knowledge. For a moment, the warrior was reminded of when she was in training herself... and a certain, younger tom-cat was always begging her for training. Even though he definitely had a mentor to go to.
...Greenapple silently huffed. It was time to patrol, not to reminisce.
The walk to Evergreen Grotto was uneventful. Before leaving to hunt with Mudslide, she momentarily stopped between Emberpaw and Cloverpaw. "If you need help, you can ask me," the she-cat murmured. She didn't want Cloverpaw to get in over her head with teaching an untrained apprentice. Though she wasn't going to take over, either. This would be good practice for Cloverpaw. She'd likely be a mentor herself one day.
Now, to catch some prey...
(greenapple rolled an 18!)
(greenapple rolled a 12!)
Without straying far away from the apprentices, Greenapple took a few minutes to catch a big toad and salamander. Both of which she had to go searching for, as they were usually dormant in leafbare... but they were in a cave. It felt warmer farther in, maybe that's why they were in here. She was aware some cats didn't find toad to be that appetizing, but Greenapple never minded it.
Greenapple glanced towards Mudslide, who seemed to have caught a bird and mouse, and then back at Emberpaw and Cloverpaw. How were they doing?
now that they have arrived, cloverpaw turned and saw mudslide going off on their own. well, the warrior-aged apprentice was about to join them when emberpaw spoke. right. the small tabby nodded, turning to face the young tom. his mind flashed back at dwanstar's lesson. "when crouch, put all weight on haunches. so pawsteps do uh not impact the ground (whatever dawnstar ment by that). Also, uh... lift your tail. not too high, but uh. not drag. against ground. stiff and straight. when the... time comes to leap. make sure your uh,,, weight is even, or it could mess your leap. up. and put strength in hind legs, too." that should be enough for the young cat, right? cloverpaw turned away to start her hunt. without looking back, she told the apprentice "lets see you in action." with that, they slipped off into the shadows.
[roll: 17, 8, 12. success! +1 vole]
this was off to a good start. the tabby cat managed to sneak up on a vole, killing it before it could say 'cat' (if voles could speak, of course). the scarred tabby purred with satisfaction. they buried their prey so they could return later, and moved on to search for more.
[roll: 12, 9, 17. success! +1 thrush]
this was pure luck. the tom somehow came across a thrush in search of food. very scrawny at that, but a thrush none the less. once they stalked close enough, the small tabby leaped and landed square on its back. it struggled under cloverpaw's claws, but they killed it with a swift bite to the neck. now one more piece of prey wouldn't hurt at all, considering it was still leaf-bare.
[11, 2, 1. success! +1 mouse]
well pooey. it seemed their luck ran out. they did find some prey - a mouse - but it was... meager. they wouldn't pass up the prey however. so after a quick crouch and stalk forward, they leaped once more and killed the rodent.
three pieces of prey should be good unless needed more, so cloverpaw picked up his mouse and headed back to where the patrol had gathered, collecting his other pieces of prey he had caught along the way. once the patrol came into view, cloverpaw emerged from the shadows, being visible once more. without saying anything, they sat down and dropped their catches at their paws.
