It was time. With the cold weather beginning to settle in, there was little time left to collect herbs before the snow and cold killed most of them off for the year. Just thinking about it... Never mind that, Tansy, think about it too hard and you'll stress yourself into a meltdown! Padding into the clearing, the tortie clears her throat and calls out a bit more confidently than the last time she did this. Gathering herbs was crucial right now-- with so many injuries not getting the proper treatment... The risk of infection or illness or death would steadily rise. Not on her watch.

"I need some of you to go out on patrol for me again!" She calls out, pausing to swallow nervously while attention falls upon her. "Listen closely... With Leafbare coming in fast, I need you all to take this seriously, please! If I send ya out, be sure to get at least two of everything I ask for amongst you if you're able! And carry as much as you can! We're really gonna need it!"

Without further ado, she begins to prattle off her list.

"Cherryswirl ( @Dust ), I need you to take Pricklestep ( @Galaxy_ ) and Frecklepaw ( @roo! ) out to find me lavender, thyme, and borage. So lavender grows in these little shrubs with tall stems. The leaves are kinda greyish and narrow. The flowers look like these little beads and are usually purple but if it's dried up and is all brown now that's fine too. Same goes for thyme. Small shrub, kinda long stems but it's gonna have small and round green leaves. Smells kinda spicy while lavender smells... Like a flower, I guess. And then borage-- if ya can't get the blue pointy flowers that's fine. The big, scalloped leaves will do just fine. The stems on the plants are kinda purple and hairy, so keep an eye out for that!"

"Next up... Falconflight ( @The Doctor ), could you, Littlewave ( @Starfall ), and Fishpaw ( @Dark ) head out to find me some burnet leaves, juniper berries, and goldenrod? Burnet smells super fresh and refreshing and has these small, toothy looking leaves. Really spikey. Juniper berries are little blue berries. They're not shiny and they got these little needle leaves. They can be sharp so be careful pickin' em! And then goldenrod, if ya can find any, has these suuuuper long, skinny leaves. The stems are long too and usually covered in lots and lots of tiny yellow flowers. I think we can also use 'em if they're brown and dry so bring some back regardless of what they look like."

"Rushwater ( @redshiftreign )... Can you, Shellwhisker ( @lynxyboo ), and Bluebellpaw ( @Spartan-117 ) head out to find burdock roots and leaves, and poppy seeds? They got big, green, wavy leaves and they grow these spikey balls at the end of their stems. The plant gets super tall and the leaves are huge, and when ya find it I need leaves and the root. Poppy seeds are pretty self explanatory... But, uh, if you don't know what they look like, they're these tiny little black seeds that grow in the middle of flowers with round petals. Look for red or orange."

"That leaves Dapplewing ( @Omari ) and Marigoldleap ( @Catherine ) with me to look for watermint, blessed thistle, and chervil. Watermint grows by water with these tall stems. It has these little spiky purple flowers, but we just need the leaves. Blessed thistle is pretty easy to spot... Spiky bulb with a spiky purple flowers with tiny petals on top. Chervil is a pretty full plant. Light green with lots of small leaves and smells sweet and spicy... It's a nice plant."

Phew. That had to be all of it, right? Running through the list again in her head... Yep, covers everything. Nodding to herself as her gaze sweeps around at her clan mates, she offers a small, nervous smile.

"Thank you everyone... Let me know if you have any other questions."

And now to sit and wait for her patrol mates to join her so they can head out together.

Shellwhisker got to her paws and stretched, her tail curving smoothly towards her back, as she heard Tansypaw call her name. She headed over to the medicine apprentice. ''Is there anywhere specific you wish for us to go, Tansypaw, or shall we choose?'' The warrior sat down and waited her patrol mates, Rushwater and Bluebellpaw, to head over towards her. Shellwhisker flicked an ear as she waited for Tansypaw's response.

The blue-grey-furred apprentice smiles at the other cat before he approaches his hero - Rushwater - and one of the cats he enjoys company of - Tansypaw. He can't help but smile at the warrior as he approaches. "Hey, Rushwater. I'm Bluebellpaw." He mews with a smile.

steadily, the muscled tom had been spending more time helping about the camp rather than on his own excursions deep into the territory to patrol or hunt in isolation. though he’d been a loyal member of the clan for his entire life, he never quite felt comfortable under the scrutinizing stares of others. more recently (perhaps in part to him trying to find things to help with both outside of camp and in it) he’d become more at ease letting his pace slow a few notches and linger. take a breath, and give himself much needed time to collect his thoughts before the next task.

even then, the breaks he allowed himself were scarce and short. it did, however, give him the benefit of actually being in camp when his name was called for patrol. making great pace, rushwater strode over with a confident and assured gait to hear the full spiel tansypaw gave about the herbs and their appearance. taking note, he turned to his patrol mates who had already gathered, much to his delight.

the younger one- bluebellpaw as he had heard -introduced himself with a smile. faint recognition flashed in rushwater’s eyes and he gave the apprentice a brief nod of acknowledgment. “i’ve seen you around, pleasure to formally make your acquaintance.”

he heard shellwhisker’s inquiry and racked his mind for locations of plants like described. well, he had seen plenty of orange or red flowers along the sprawling expanse that was the rugged range, and it wasn’t uncommon to search for herbs there due to the sheer size of the area. it was as good a place to start as any, and maybe the slightly difficult trek would be good for the apprentice to get a real feel for the kind of hard work that was expected from warriors.

“if there’s no where in particular, i think we’ll head out to the rugged range,” rushwater began, he was the patrol leader after all and he figured he’d do good to try and keep things organized and efficient, “i recall there being poppy there at least, from a past herb patrol. if we can’t find burdock we can circle back through the territory. if my memory serves me right, though, i believe i’ve seen both of the described plants there.”

having a keen eye had its perks, and rushwater was nothing if not observant.

Shellwhisker narrowed her ice-blue eyes. ''Well, if we're looking for burdock and poppy, I don't think the rugged range will be the best to look for them,'' The warrior shook her head. ''It's too dry. Not even a dandelion leaf would survive there. I think we should head for.....Haven Springs. It has more water.''
''Now, I'm not trying to undermine you, Rushwater, you're the leader of this patrol, but I'm expressing my opinion.''

The young apprentice's eyes look between the two warriors and he starts to worry. He does not want to be on a patrol with cats who argue. He does not like cats who argue - it scares him. He turns his attention to Rushwater and he hesitates before offering a smile. "Ready to go when you are!" He mews, his voice excited but shaky.

“no harm done, shellwhisker.” rushwater says cooly as he turns and gestures for her and bluebellpaw to follow as they talked. “i hear your suggestion, and it makes logical sense, but every poppy i’ve seen has been in fields a bit away from the banks. i’ve no clue about burdock, so maybe you’re right on that front. i’ve been mistaken before,”

he pauses, tail swaying languidly as he thought. his mind was a well oiled machine, processing information and deciding what to do with it. he valued shellwhisker’s input, but finding as much poppy as they needed by the springs seemed. . . unlikely. perhaps the range was too far a trek, even if his goal was only the sprawling fields of flora that separated it from riverclan’s main territory.

“but,” he began again, “i’ve a better suggestion that might very well be better than either. what about those fields a small ways off from the bend in the river? there’s plenty of fresh water near by, but enough open space, too. it’s in the same direction as the springs, too, but closer. if we find none there, i’ll gladly humor your suggestion.” he said, without a twinge of annoyance or argument, merely levelheaded diplomacy and suggestion.

with that being said, he awaited a response as the patrol made their way towards the camp exit.

Shellwhisker shook her head and followed. ''The only herb to be likely growing by the river is watermint,'' She explained. ''Besides, that's probably where Tansypaw and her patrol will go.''

Minnowpaw stood, her unused joints groaning in protest.
How long had she been sitting there?
She didn’t know.
Finally her mind registered the fact that she was being out on a hunting patrol.
I have never hunted before…
The realization came as a shock.
She was maybe nine or ten moons and had never been hunting. She had even been apprentices early! Two moons early!
“Great…”
She began to walk towards her patrol, recognizing neither of them.
“Excuse me?” She whispered quietly to the one that seemed to hold the most authority. “I have never been hunting.”
Her blue eyes wandered away from the patrol leader.
His harsh tone was making her slightly uncomfortable.
Minnowpaw jerked her head back towards Falconfrost, making the large scar covering her neck tingle.
While waiting for a response her mind wandered.
Who’s my new mentor again?
She had been appointed a new mentor after her first, Whitesnake, had gone missing. Which had been when Gingerstar had still been Gingerfrost.
Snow…something…
I should probably find them soon
The grey apprentice zoned out for a second before jerking her gaze back towards the patrol leader.

"You've never hunted before?" Falconfrost sounded surprised.
