Ottersplash was a very mature warrior who did very mature things. You know, like chasing a bird through several foxlengths of territory at high speed with no hope of catching it.

…In his defense, all his warrior-ly duties were done for the day and it seemed like a good idea to 'hunt' in his free time.

Ottersplash soared on the feeling of exhilaration as he chased the nimble creature, reaching a speed he hadn’t reached in a long time because well—this speed was kind of uncalled for and maybe a little a lot unsafe. He laughed loudly through panting breathes. Stars it was nice, just being able to let loose and push his body to the extreme. His veins bust with life and adrenaline, filling his eyes with splashes of color when he blinked.

It registered late he’d travelled all the way to Sedgewater Valley. What the--? So caught up in the chase with the bird (who was definitely playing along too, don’t think they’re innocent in this!), Ottersplash hadn’t noticed the subtle changes of scenery.

“No—come back!” Otter shouted when the bird finally shot straight up into the air. Yeaah, no chance he could chase it now. Too bad…he really—whoa! Speaking of the unsafe speed thing. Otter turned the corner too quick, barreling straight toward what looked like a RiverClan she-cat staring at...was that a butterfly? “WATCH OUT!”

Thinking fast, the ginger warrior recklessly tossed his weight to the left. His paws couldn’t get enough traction with the earth when he tried stopping (since he’d been running like a maniac), so Ottersplash went down hard, tumbling across the earth in a magnificent show of ginger-white limbs. When he finally rolled to a stop just before the river, Otter broke out into laughter. Yeah…his head was spinning. His body ached a little, but the pain wasn’t so bad.

He turned back to the butterfly-invested she-cat with a wide grin and wild, honey-colored eyes. “Oh stars, I’m so sorry—I didn’t mean to almost run you over!”

What was with these young cats and nearly trampling her? Dirt and grass flew as Starlingflight scrabbled to her paws and retreated backwards, but his clumsy attempt at stopping had send the tom tumbling next to the riverbank. Her fur fluffed up, and she stomped over to him, her peaceful afternoon ruined.

"Great stars, are all you youngsters so blind as you can't see a cat in front of you when you run about the territory?" She spat crossly, ruffled fur from paws to tail. She lashed her tail, "What do you have to say for yourself? What possible reason could you have to be so careless?" Starlingflight was normally not so ill-tempered..but she had been having a lovely moment, and nearly getting trampled by a speeding Clanmate for the second time in two moon had irritated her deeply.

"Get up and clean yourself off. What's your name, kit?" Starlingflight sat down and forced her fur to lie flat. The butterfly was gone, and by Starclan she was glad he hadn't taken out the fish she had caught. If he had, he'd have ended up spending all afternoon hunting for real under Starlingflight's supervision.

Well oops. Apparenlty this she-cat was the wrong type to crash into, having already started laying into him for his recklessness. Ottersplash tried his best to restrain his smiles. He didn't want her to feel disrespected by how much fun he definitely just had, regardless of her protests.

"Whoa, whoa... I'm saying I'm sorry!" Otter winced as he pushed up on front paws, trying to stand upright while dirt and tufts of grass fell from his fur. He smiled apologetically at the miffed warrior, inserting as much innocence and charm as he could into the soft expression. He wasn't offended at her outburst. Otter almost crashed into her, after all.

"I'm Ottersplash and really, I'm sorry, too. Are you all right?" Ottersplash's whiskers were twitching with amusement since she called him a kit. Due to his size and muscular form, most cats assumed he was older than he was; it was weird and a little refreshing to get the opposite. It felt weirder still, getting scolded like this, but in an entertaining way. "What's your name?"

The black and white she-cat scoffed. "Starlingflight. And it's fine. I'm sorry for snapping at you like that, Ottersplash. " She was quick to make amends. Emotions didn't have a place in her heart, so they came and went as smoothly and and as swiftly as a pebble slipped away in the river.

"So what were you fleeing from? By the speed you were going, I'd say fox, but there's not a fox in sight, nor scent." She lifted a brow in question, having not seen the bird he had been chasing joyfully. Starlingflight studied him. Young. Naive, obviously. Not timid, no, he was anything but timid. Outgoing, possibly. He must have only just become a warrior, she mused.

The apology surprised him. Was he just used to more angry cats and he expected more chewing out, or had he imagined the annoyance in her voice beforehand? Ottersplash decided not to question it.

"No worries! I get why you did. I honestly didn't expect to see any cats by the border," Otter explained with a lighthearted chuckle, picking bits of rock out from beneath his claws. He dipped his head in a warm greeting. "Nice to meet you Starlingflight."

As she waited for an answer to her new question, Ottersplash's paws shuffled in the earth. He couldn't explain why, but he felt a prickle of unease under that stare, like Starling was taking him apart and analyzing the pieces.

...Oh well, not like it was a big deal. He grinned widely. "I wasn't running away, I was chasing something. A bird. Yeah, yeah, before you say anything I know I wasn't going to catch it. Just felt nice to stretch my legs. Sometimes you gotta run."

Peering around at their surroundings for the first time, Ottersplash noticed the fish by the riverbank. He also remembered the butterfly. "I'm sure you get it though- that's why you're out here too. For some peace, yeah?" Otter recalled in the split second before he tore into the area how intently she was looking at that butterfly, and his heart warmed.

"Yeah, Kestrelstar. Don't you know? Kestrelwing's now the leader! He received his nine lives already!" Appleheart smiled and continued, "Enough about me, how were you? Done anything recently?" @FrostCat

Huh. Breezedapple didn't know that Snakeheart had found a leader. Interesting. "Well, we finally have a deputy," Breezedapple shared. "Wolffang."

Starlingflight gazed at him, then she laughed, "And to you the same, Ottersplash." He scrutiny was over, and she sat down on her paws, rolling her eyes. "O' stars tell me it wasn't a starling you were chasing, youngster," It was her attempt at a joke. "Oh dear, I feel a bit flighty now. Such a speedy and determined young cat could definitely catch an old bird like me unawares."

It was...an attempt. Starling had never been good at jokes. Too literal, too meh in tone. But it was worth a try, right?

"Ah, yes. Windclan now has a deputy! Eagleclaw had already told me. I was getting worried. You never know..." Appleheart trailed off and paused for a bit. "I don't think you've met Eagleclaw yet, he's a new member of Windclan." Appleheart smiled. @FrostCat
