Cloudberry probably thought she was a mess now. Truth is, she kind of was. In the six days she had been an apprentice, she had checked an elder for ticks, gone on a hunting patrol, and been shown the waterbarn. That was... about it.

Six days ago? She already needed a new mentor after six days? Ugh these stupid warriors and their neglectfulness. Leaving me to pick up their responsibilities. Cloudberry thought tail lashing out behind her a few times. "That's something, I guess..." She started whiskers twitching. "Because your last mentor was useless, we are just going to start with frog and toad catching." Cloudberry informed her apprentice, getting to her paws and walking towards the exit. Why frog and toad hunting? It was fun and it got more food. Food was one of the most important things in life.

"You could say that." She snorted at Irisflame's remarkEchopaw moved Dewpaw out of her mind and went back to listening to Irisflame. Comfrey root. That one was new. Standing in front of where Lightbreeze and Irisflame were, Echopaw thought hard while looking at her paws. Picking her head up, she looked at Irisflame, "Do they... sooth the joint?" It was a wild guess and it to her it felt pretty off.

Sparrowsnap stretched her jaws in a long, delicious yawn as she slipped quietly into the warrior's den. Kicking back her hind-legs to give her fur a couple of good shakes, she circled a neat, moist patch of moss before finally flopping down and suppressing a slight grin. She had to admit, it felt so good to be able to relax again in the warm comfort of the warrior's den after her fight with Slashthroat. And what was even better? She had gotten rid of the burden of that stupid brown she-cat! Slashthroat was dead. Dead and gone for good.

"Hey!" Twistedflame padded in, trying to make conversation. "I heard Slashthroat's dead. Did you have anything to do with it?"

Echopaw seemed to be getting quite the amount of attention from her new position, which she looked fine with. She attracted a few 'congrats' from fellow apprentices, and not to mention some from warriors. And a little snap from Falcondive. She should probably tell the silvery she-cat not to cross his path. As she approached, Irisflame could feel her smile grow wider, excitement fluffing up her pelt. Two of her favourite cats, meeting each other. It was quite the treat! Her apprentice seemed to recognize Nettlespark, which ruined some of the surprise. She squints in amusement at his explanation, a small laugh escaping her.
"Everyday? I would have to say the same, Prickle!" She huffed, "Don't waste your breath on jokes, they don't suit you." She teased, dark blue eyes glinting with challenge. Her expression changed instantly to surprise as she recalled the situation, remembering her anger at the two kits herself.
"I remember that day. I had no idea you were the one who tried to stop them, though. Echopaw, promise me you won't go attacking any more foxes. I'm too busy to have an injured apprentice." She mewed, winking at the young she-cat. It had been a stressful situation in the moment, but now she could safely look back and laugh. Without being clawed by a fox, at that. She felt shock fill her eyes, and her gaze hardened. Prickle, you naughty, naughty cat.
"Excuse me?! Nettlespark, I am your medicine cat. I would never be so immature." She exclaimed in mock offence, huffing.

Glidingleaf sighed as a familiar voice dashed her hopes of continuing her nap. Pulling herself up to lean on her forearms, Glidingleaf looked down from her half sitting half laying position to chuckle at the kits as they awoke. She had gotten used to them calling her ‘mama’ and referred to them as her kits, but a tiny voice often tried to correct her in her mind. For now, though, the kits and her were alone so she was free to smile at the little ones with abandon and she leaned over to give Hemlockkit, Whisperkit, Pinekit, and Beechkit an affectionate lick on the head, leaving out Periwinklekit and Wychkit since they seemed to still be asleep.

“Yes, I see, darling,” she purred warmly to Whisperkit before purring to all of the kits who were awake, “good morning my dears.”

When Flintfreckle arrived, she extended her affectionate smile to the tom, forgetting momentarily that they were near strangers. She quickly adjusted to offer merely a friendly face and gratefully took the mouse with some sheepishness.

“Thank you, Flintfreckle,” she mewed after a quiet cough.

Her stomach growled again and she tucked sloppily into the mouse, feeling embarrassed but unable to eat daintily in the face of her hunger. Feeding five kits was a task that required regular sustenance- especially after the time she’d spent with little to no food in her system. At least now her ribs only appeared when she shifted position, rather than staying prominent through every position.

Watching Flintfreckle lovingly nuzzle his kits hurt. It had hurt every time she’d watched it, but she’d secretly hoped it would go away. The truth was, though, that seeing his affectionate greeting for his kits only made her feel more lonely. Normally, a tom would greet his mate and kits with equal affection, but they still seemed distant from each other. When she watched him nuzzle his kits she simply felt like what she was- a stand in for their mother who had no mate of her own and who had no claim to these kittens- aside from Whisperkit. Yet, he nuzzled Whisperkit too- something that made her heart glow despite her belief that it could do nothing but hurt for the rest of her life.

After this moon of isolation and awkward encounters, Glidingleaf felt healed enough that she wanted her and Flintfreckle to be friends. She had to act now before losing her nerve. Stretching, she caught him just before he lifted his head away from the kits and licked his cheek.

“Thank you.”

She stared significantly into his eyes for a moment before turning her attention back to the kittens- her little loves. When Pinekit spoke up, Glidingleaf chuckled and looked at the little she-kit. The long-furred tabby queen was still a bit drowsy from sleep and didn’t necessarily want to have to keep such a close eye on the playing kits. Purring at the small group, she suggested sweetly,

“How about a story instead? I’m sure daddy would love to give you one!”

She looked at Flintfreckle with a mischievous glint in her eyes and stuck the tip of her tongue out playfully at him. Lately, the kits’ playful energy had been infecting her and she giggled to herself as she offered the tom up for a story, knowing the kits would pounce on him.

Hemlockkit giggles as his kick woke up Beechkit and grinned playfully as Pinekit and Wisperkit woke as well. The little black kit dropped into a play crouch and batted at Whisperkit’s ears mischievously. He hadn’t been paying much attention, but a familiar scent soon washed over him.

“Daddy!”

His voice was a high-pitched squeal and he tumbled over Pinekit in his haste to reach his father.

“Daddy! Daddy!”

Hemlockkit squealed again when Flintfreckle’s tongue rasped over his head and he looked expectantly up at the tom. Now that his father was here, surely something fun would happen! When his mother suggested that his father tell a story, Hemlockkit squealed again and began bouncing up and down.

“Yes! Story time, story time! Daddy tell story!”

Sparrowsnap's yellow eyes rounded as the tom cheerfully voiced his questions. Eh, whatever - she might as well finally spill out the truth. Slashthroat, after all, was dead now.

In a deliberately blunt voice Sparrowsnap hummed, "Oh, Slashthroat? Yeah, I killed her."

Bravedawn's brows shot up. Not very healthy? Cause damage to her? She wanted to burst out laughing - that was the stupidest thing she'd ever heard. Bravedawn highly doubted this mouse of an apprentice would be able to hurt her. She wanted to knock the smugness right out of Dreampaw, and that was exactly what she was going to do.
"Alright, then," she said, deciding to ignore all of the 'best for you' and 'worsen your problems' crap spewing out of Dreampaw's mouth. "If you won't come to me, I'll come to you."
She didn't even wait to finish the sentence - she was already launching herself at Dreampaw with a snarl, her paws outstretched, prepared to brutally slam Dreampaw into the dirt.

Irisflame settled down by the labouring queen, clearly too much in pain to start conversation. She could smell the thick scent of fear around the room, the emotion emitting out of all four of them in short, fast, pulses. This was only the second birth she was assisting. Things could still go wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. Pupils dilating with anxiety, she glanced warily to her side as Echopaw dashed off to retrieve the stick. The silvery apprentice looked as worried as she felt. She'd have to learn to keep a stone face. She didn't want to worry the patient. Nipping the first kit's air sac open, she licked it hurriedly and placed it by its pained mother. She was in too much of a hurry to process the lift thing and whether it was alive or not. That would have to be settled later. She grabbed some miss and began to dab at the blood that spotted the den floor, nose wrinkling at the metallic scent.

Dropping the moss, she draped her tail around Fawnleap's tired shoulders, murmuring the words 'push' and 'you're doing so well' every once in a while. The second kit was on its way... As her apprentice returned, she looked at her with mild concern in her eyes. Shooting her a look that said 'are you okay?', she gave her a strained smile and turned back to the queen. There was nothing she could do now. Except give her some borage after she was done. That would help with her milk. Her heart thrummed steadily, worry in her eyes. She looked gratefully at Mintheart as she hobbled over, and she recognized the queen from her very first birth assistance. She knew what it was like. She could help.
