The walk along the territory had been... silent. And awkward. His fault, naturally. Snowybreeze simply lacked the charisma and interesting qualities a fury carried with them at all times. Hawkfur, with his important role within the clan, his strong presence, and his continuously caring heart was someone he held in high esteem. Not to mention he was Bravebird's mate and mentor to two of his beloved treasures! It was important to make a good impression at all times, eep! Except... well... the gentle giant seemed incapable of that, bumbling out clumsy apologies whenever he realized that he had been staring for too long and faltering whenever he wanted to assure his companion that he did not mind being stared at in turn. By golly, this was all a mess!
So engrossed was he in not messing up their walk together any more than he already had that he almost missed it. The scent of cat. Fresh. And alone.
A whine of discomfort bubbled in the back of his throat, knowing full well that there was currently a rule against going out by your lonesome on the territory. Too many cats had been hurt and lost already, and Twilightstar... goodness... the leader just wanted to avoid more cats getting hurt. Or never returning. A very real possibility for both his youngest daughter and his definitely not mother, Deadmoon. The tom's ears flattened, paws having crushed the grass beneath nervously. Another scent, more faded, seemed to waft in and out of his periphery as well, but Snowybreeze couldn't tell what was up with it. A hunt, perhaps? Neither scent seemed to be... together. There was a more faded quality to one than the other, not to mention less purpose behind the faded scent. The scents were familiar to him, which only made the whole thing a worse mess. Had it been the stench of rogue... Well, that was easier. But a clanmate? Alone? His whine only grew higher in pitch.
"I-I... I don't..." he fumbled at Hawkfur's question, forepaws shifting even more as his nerves became ever more frayed.
The idea of clanmates needing to be found and punished was terrifying to him. He was certain there was a reason for this one cat to be out and about despite Twilightstar's orders! By golly, his clanmates were good cats. Honorable cats! He didn't like the prospect of ever having to go against them at all!
Before he could answer the fury's question, the wind picked up, and the scent of a stranger raised his hackles by instinct, eyes that were usually warm and compassionate narrowing with overprotective fury. He hadn't forgotten the rebellion of moons past. Hadn't forgotten his own experiences having to kill outsiders who meant to hurt his clan. Meeting Hawkfur's sharpened gaze with his own, uncharacteristically battle ready one, he followed the red warrior, his previous timidity gone with the breeze.
Upon approach, Snowybreeze spotted him. The stranger. Claws unsheathed, readying himself to spring to Hawkfur's defense if necessary. It was clear that he wouldn't be having to defend the fury from attack, however, as seemingly by command from Morningglow, the stranger retreated, sky blue eyes following until he could see him no more. Despite himself, he kept that same stern glare on the warrior, uncertain of what to make of this. He was clearly apologizing for his transgressions... and of course, it made sense. Partly. Because unfortunately, the Maine Coon mix's nose picked up everything and... well... there really had been no scent of interest leading up to this point aside of Morningglow's. So... he didn't really want to call the tom a liar because, golly, that was just not something he had in him... but perhaps he was covering up a little? Why? Was the outsider a friend? If it was a friend or perhaps... kitty of special importance to Morningglow, why, gosh... they wouldn't hurt him. Unfortunately, though, they would never know. Not now that Morningglow had all but shooed him away.
Attention grabbed by the sudden motion of Flaxseed's running, the gentle giant got between Hawkfur and the warrior, ears flattened only momentarily, nerves still on end and battle ready. He... wasn't sure why his clanmate was running towards the fury with such a carefree attitude when so obviously in trouble, but he could only assume that the feline was unaware of the severity of the situation. This was... golly... he didn't like to think ill of anyone... but it was mighty...
"Se... Selfish. These. Outings... I-I know. You don't. Mean harm. But. Cats. Have vanished. Already. Been hurt. Twilightstar. Crowtooth. Lightningstorm. They've had. Goodness. They've had. No rest. Worrying. About. All of. Us. Trying. To keep us. Safe. P-please. No more. Breaking rules. We have. Lost... Enough," Snowybreeze mewed, eyes on Flaxseed first and Morningglow next as he spoke, ears drooping sadly as he begged for this to be taken seriously.
He had lost almost half of his remaining family to the twolegs already. Plenty of clanmates were long gone. StarClan knew if they would see them again. Visiting others could wait. Taking walks alone could wait. There was no time to be so selfish... because no matter who it was, there would be a broken heart that would never mend waiting in camp when they realized a loved one or a friend would never watch the sun rise with them again.
