Slatestripe was relieved that he wasn’t the only cat who felt Nightpaw’s death was suspicious. He nodded in agreement. “Something’s fishy about it, for sure. Why would a RiverClan apprentice who knows how to swim drown? Unless she was in the rapids, but I’ve never known an apprentice to go there without a warrior. I want to look into it more.” He looked around, making sure that no other cat was close enough to hear. Then, he whispered, “I think we should remain cautious of Hawkpaw. Are you willing to team up to look into this? We can be more efficient together.”

She relaxed a little, glad someone else had thought Hawkpaw suspicious. At least she wasn't going completely crazy.

"Definitely." She said, nodding. "Two heads are better than one. But one more thing-" She swallowed a little, finally letting out her biggest suspicion. "Hawkpaw's scent... it's the same as the one on Sproutkit the night he died." She paused a little. "What are the chances?"

Slatestripe tensed. “It’s possible that it’s just a bad coincidence. But, it’s something to keep in mind for sure. I hope one of our own wouldn’t do anything to hurt their Clanmates, but anything is on the table when you’re dealing with a former outsider.” He paused. “Another thing… When Hawkpaw first joined the Clan as Thorn, I noticed several cats seemed uneasy around him. As if they were afraid. I think that’s telling. Maybe some cats know more than they’re letting on.”

He lashed his tail. “I think we should speak to Reedwhisker first, so we can find out more about Nightpaw. We can confirm if she actually had swimming lessons, and how good of a swimmer she was if so. We can go from there. Thoughts?”

She nodded. Perhaps Hawkpaw had come across her son in the hunting grounds, and decided to bury him. But.. why? He didn't seem compassionate, nor kind.

"I noticed that too," she added. "Fawnpaw, the most. She freezes up every time she sees Hawkpaw, and that outburst she had at him- I've never seen her get angry before." Could Fawnpaw have discovered something?

"That's a good idea- though with Reedwhisker as her mentor, I doubt Nightpaw didn't know how to swim."

Slatestripe had to agree, but if they were going to ever make any accusations they had to be a hundred percent sure of everything. “I think we should give Reedwhisker a day or two to grieve, and then approach with our questions. If we do it now, we probably won’t get a good response. Plus, that would just be insensitive.”

His eyes drifted toward Reedwhisker. Poor cat. Slatestripe couldn’t imagine losing Autumnpaw. He made a mental note to give her a stern talking-to soon, reminding her of the dangers she faced as a young apprentice. Suddenly, an idea came to him.

“While we wait for Reedwhisker to grieve, why don’t we see if we can find Nightpaw’s scent and follow it? It’s probably still fresh. That might give us some clues.”

The silver apprentice jumped as a voice spoke to her suddenly. She whipped around, finding herself face to face with another molly. "Yeah, uh, I am. My friends, Fawnpaw and Stormpaw." She mewed quickly, and a little suspiciously. She didn't know this cat, and she was too on edge and guarded to truly speak to her about what she was saying. "I'm Silverpaw, by the way."

(Sorry for the wait on this one, I had a crazy work week)

Irispaw realized then that Silverpaw obviously didn't recognize her, which made sense since she had been gone longer than Silverpaw had likely been an apprentice. This was judged purely on the fact that Silverpaw looked younger and because she hadn't talked to her before she went missing several moons ago - a fact Iris was really beginning to regret right about now since she had no one in RiverClan. "Ah- my name is Irispaw," She mewed, her face warming in embarrassment. Had she forgotten every bit of etiquette she knew? But, then again when was the last time she'd really talked to someone at all, lest someone her own age? "I've just returned to RiverClan. You probably don't recognize me, I didn't really talk to many people back then." She'd had her paws full with her brother and mentor and training and then went missing early in apprentice hood before she'd had a chance to make any friends.

Ivybush lazed in the sunny clearing, she licked her paw and pulled it over ear. She purred contentedly.

Slatestripe sighed contentedly as he finished his afternoon washing. Getting all that dirt out of his fur had been a challenge, but he finally did it. Oh well. He should’ve expected to get this dirty when he decided to roll down a dusty old hill. Still, it was fun.

I probably should find a task to complete, he decided. He’d spent the morning on his own in the woods, taking a much needed break from the intensity of Clan life as of late. His mind had been on the investigation he was doing with Lilycreek more often than on anything else. Taking a break had been the right choice.

But now, it was time to work. He glanced around, looking for a cat to invite hunting.

Ivybush wandered by, he had just woken up after a nice nap and was ready to get going. She flicked her tail slowly as she looked around the clearing. Who will go out on a patrol with me.... She thought, gazing around. Her eyes stopped on Slatestripe and they bounded over to him.
