Shinefang came closer as the apprentice fell back to the earth. The with and ginger tom was speaking to him and aware enough to read his lips evidently, which was good. Briskly, the old tom set his muzzle close to the wound and did a couple of short sniffs. Instantly he recognized the sour tang of infection. "How lo-" Shinefang began, but he stopped when he realized the younger cat wouldn't be able to see his mouth from where he was standing and he backed away. "How long ago did you get the wound the first time?" he asked. Based on that stench, it had been at least a couple of days. He didn't bother to stiffle his bushy tail giving an annoyed swat against the frozen earth. The apprentice should have come to him as soon as the injury had happened.

Thunderpaw went completely silent for a moment. He rested his head on the ground and looked at the medicine cat as he spoke to him. "I got it a couple sunrises ago. I was too scared to see you in the medicine den and I thought you might be busy." , he replied. That very moment Thunderpaw knew he had made a mistake of not going to the medicine cats the first time. He laid there waiting for Shinefang to scold him.

Shinefang turned his head to hide his mouth as he mutter, "Mousebrained apprentices," under his breath. He then turned back to the younger cat and said more clearly. "It's infected. I'll have to go and get a herb from my den since there's nothing out here." In the dead of leafbare, there would be no additional herbs out here to discover. What the old tom had in his den was what he had. "I'll be back... try not to make it any worse while I'm gone. You don't move unless a Starclan opens up and tells you to, or a dog comes loping out of the woods. Got it?" Without waiting to see if the apprentice had caught all of that, the grouch turned his fluffy tail and began to trek back to his den, murmuring foxdungs as he went.
