Soaringpaw had been sitting near the entrance of the apprentice's den. The silence...did not last at all. When one of the demoted Lionhearts (Rowanmane was his name?) came running into camp carrying a...dead...body...with him. The head. She only came a few steps closer to get a better view of the body; The impact on the head already told her how the cat might've died. And she didn't like it. Not a single bit. She may not know the whole story but she already hated what it hinted at. Help him? He already looks dead. There's no way the medicine cats would be able to help with that. How quick did he die? When did he die? Where did he die? How did he die? This questions aren't getting any answers anytime soon. Death had always frightened her. And seeing a most likely dead cat in the clearing didn't help. The dangers of life. She was right to always be on guard.

The corpse... It looked like a mess. The deputy sooned arrived and confirmed he couldn't have survived that. Soaringpaw wasn't sure how she should react... Disgusted... Disturbed... And she may or may not be terrified as well. Where was Stormstar? She should be coming her soon. She never would've thought a cat could just...die like that. She could sense that no one so far had a pleasant reaction. And apprentice her age let out a shriek and the deputy..seemed a little different from usual. And Rowanmane looked no better. And herself...she knew she shouldn't show a lot of emotions but it was hard when the dead body in front of you looked like..that. With her fear of death that she'd never get over if cats just die like this. Even a face like her's still showed the hints of her displeasure. No, surely a warrior would be...unafraid of...these things. They're warriors. She wondered if normal warriors were..used to this or not. They've probably gotten used to blood and death. But this wasn't just blood and death, this cat got...y'know...his...head...so...disfigured...for the sky's sake. The only way for her to get a clear answer was to watch the other cat's reactions. And she much rather do that than to look directly at the dead warrior's..corpse

More blood was pooling and he could hardly bring himself to look at the cratered injury. It disgusted him…and he had nothing to take his feelings out on right now. No predator or cat he could rip his claws through. Instead he was crouched here, hopeless and sobbing, small hics coming through as he tried to breath. No cat deserved this. WHY? WHY SEDGEFLAKE? WHY DID HE HAVE TO FIND THE TRAUMATIZING SIGHT? WHY HIM. WHY HIM. Then the blurred voice of OwlTalon came…and multiple shrieks around…he could hardly focus on it though. His ears were pinned back as he was in dismay.

Then…OwlTalon was talking about breathing…why the hell was she talking about that…now? Oh…to calm him down. So he could say. What did this. Why is it that important…the rock will still be sitting there…? He tried to follow anyways and it calmed him decently, though his mind was still in shambles and tears were still falling. “R-o-roc-ks…”

Seabreeze could hardly feel his limbs but he knew they were shaking. He stumbled several times on the way home. Stormstar on his back. She hasn’t moved. He knew she was gone. But maybe Starclan will send her back once more even though her lives were given already to their cruelty. Given to Seabreeze as he stood like a fool. He should’ve died, he should be the corpse being carried into the camp’s clearing, but he wasn’t. Because the stars hated him so much that they couldn’t even let him die, that they take their strongest feline instead of letting he swim in the relief of the void.

He walked through the camp, paws dragging. Crimson falling off him and the leader he carried, staining the path from the entrance. He was wanting to go to the medicine den. Cobwebfern and Berryshine. They could bring her back, they had to. They could pray and the stars might listen. Listen like they didn’t to him. Cloverpaw. Frostmelt. Mudsmoke. They’ve all forsaken him. Their clan. He’s never hated cats for dying before. But with carrying the corpse of Riverclan’s hope he finds it surprisingly easy. Blaming himself has never gotten anywhere. This was the stars fault.

Seabreeze stopped in the middle of the clearing, unable to move without collapsing and he didn’t want to drop Stormstar. Please. Please. Please. He didn’t- tears were frozen to his face. He couldn’t think to respond. To say anything at all. He couldn’t process a single hing. The cats around him. The panic once people start realizing what’s happened. He knew he needed to get her to the medicine den. It was right there but he couldn’t bring himself to move.

“I’m sorry.” He sobs instead. But he doesn’t know who or what he’s apologizing to.

Primroseadder looked up from her salmon to see Seabreeze crouching over.....Stormstar's body?

Suddenly alert, she raced over, a grief-filled wail escaping her throat. ´´ADDERSTRIKE! ALMONDCHATTER!´´ She wailed, collapsing over the dead leader's body. ´´OWLTALON! BERRYSHINE! COBWEBFERN!´´

The warrior sobbed uncontrollably over her leader. It would hurt her, knowing that Primroseadder herself was the first and last warrior that Stormstar had named. She wanted Adderstrike. Almondchatter. She wanted the comforting embraces of her mother and former mentor. She had called for them. Hopefully....they would answer that call.

Mistybreeze gasped, her eyes widening in horror as she watched Seabreeze enter the camp with Stormstar on his shoulders. Was she... Was she dead? She choked on a sob, her eyes clouding with sorrow.

Morningpaw furrowed her brow in confusion. Was she dead? Did she go see mama? She took a step over to Seabreeze. Giving the cold body a sniff, she wailed with grief. Yes, she went to see mama.

RowanMane originally heard the trapse of pawsteps in the clearing. Then the sound of dragging. He forced himself to his paws and poked from his own den where he was being…y’know…miserable. And the sight he saw…it force him. His own throat closed in, eyes wide did, ears pinned back. What the hell? No- no- no. Not again. No more bodies. He was done seeing his friends bodies. “no…no. NO.” he wailed, suddenly skidding over next to SeaBreeze, hardly paying the tom any mind. “S-she still got her- her other life…righ’? She- Tha’s no’ it. She ain’ done yet.” but he knew she was. His breaths were jagged in the form of hyperventilating. “I’m so sorry…I’m sorry I let you down…I didn’ mean t’…abandon him.” he mumbled, crouching quickly and fussing with her fur…hide the injury. If he hid it, maybe it would be gone, and she’d miraculously get up. Yeah- that’s it. “C’mon Stormy…” his voice was strained, the rollercoaster of emotions he just went though…

Sleeping peacefully in his tree, Duskleaf heard a loud commotion which woke him from his sleep. Looking down, he seen a small group of cats starting to gather. They looked distraught. And then…no…Stormstar?! It couldn’t be! It couldn’t! Duskleaf stood up frantically, his eyes wide open. Surely this wasn’t happening! And then…"Ah!" The twig he tried to put his foot on snapped, and he unceremoniously went crashing to the ground. With a loud crash he hit the ground, pain shot through his side. Clumsily stumbling to his feet, he rushed over to join the growing crowd, ignoring the pain.

"No! No! This can’t be happening! This isn’t real!" His eyes were wide with shock and disbelief. "W-what happened?!"

Heroneye stared at the body. She didn't gawk. She just stared, eyes narrowed. Well. RiverClan had enjoyed peace for far too long. Intervention from StarClan was long overdue. It hadn't even mattered how many lives Stormstar had had. It was over. Heroneye was being cynical. She could tell herself that she didn't care, that this was to be expected, that she'd long become desensitized to this as both a warrior and a RiverClanner all day. But that didn't do anything to stop the icy, sinking feeling that built up in her chest. The same one she'd felt when she'd watched Fadingstar flee, or Sweetsap's body.

So she looked away (the only cure), turning and resting her head on her own shoulder and closing her eyes. She wondered, passively, just how long Owltalon would last. She felt guilty. What an awful thing to think. Everyone is caterwauling in pain, and you can barely bring yourself to look. Heroneye, just shut up already.

The smell of blood hit his nose so harshly. It didn't smell like prey. His head whipped around to the entrance of the clearing, eyes making contact with Seabreeze carrying...Oh, stars. No!

The Head Lionheart sprang to his paws, rushing over to the tom. "Seabreeze! Stars! Are you hurt? What happened?" Brokenstream struggled to maintain his composure, but managed to keep his fur flat. Stormstar was...gone. So soon? It couldn't be so. His gaze was distraught. "Are you sure? She didn't just lose a life? She lost all of them?"

The bengal glanced around at the gathering crowd. "Make room for Cobwebfern and Berryshine!" He called out, flicking his tail. "There may still be hope." He croaked. Surely...there would be...surely...

Dear Starclan her mentoring situation has to be cursed. And it's so stupid, so self-absorbed and absurd that this is where her mind goes first but that's where she dwells now as she watches Seabreeze haul Stormstar's limp body into camp. It takes longer than Salamanderpaw would admit for her to recognize who it is draped across the former Lionheart's back but when she does, it's the strangest feeling. Disappointment that dries up quickly enough to leave her warm-faced with guilt, resignation that settles like a blanket of frost. Of course this is what happens now. It might as well be. Par for the course. There's not a doubt in her mind that the body Seabreeze is carrying is one that's dead for good. Hadn't Stormstar only been given the one spare life? She mentioned as much the day she and Berryshine came home with those shiny new names, and Riverclan isn't lucky enough to earn a good break from Starclan yet—but they're just unlucky enough to have a good leader—a great leader—die in the onset of Leafbare. However it happened, it must have, because that's the sort of thing that would happen here.

So she doesn't rush. She's already made up her mind about what's happened and that no rushing will help the matter. You can't pull a current back upstream. You can't clean blood out of it, either. You just have to watch it go.

But of course, everyone has questions for the tom of the hour. Salamanderpaw is no exception.

"Is that all just her blood?" Seabreeze is a little grotesque, sobbing there, back streaked with red from the body he's shouldered all this way. Wretched, and Salamanderpaw should know better than to talk like this to a warrior, much less someone grieving. But all those funny old thoughts she'd once had about what strength means and what it entitles other cats to have gone all lackluster. All the strongest cats she's ever known have died. Or gone missing. Or are now drawing in close like sad kittens to a dead mother's belly, eyes bright with tears. "Are you even bleeding, Seabreeze?" It isn't fair, what she's insinuating. That's not going to stop her.
