Briarsplash's ears perked up when she heard Hawkbite's call. She swiveled back to Duskpaw and hesitated briefly; the apprentice looked excited and enthusiastic, and the prey was only right there. But she knew quite well what would happen in the event of a late patrol. "Sorry, Duskpaw... we'll have to pick this up later. I can start up your training — for real this time — tomorrow, okay? Follow me."
With that, the large warrior quickly unburied her prey and led the way back. She followed Hawkbite and Brownpaw's scents, looking back frequently to make sure her apprentice was following behind.
Duskpaw was testing the limits of the creature, so she knew for future reference. One pawstep after the other, quiet and careful, she was close to the mouse before it darted.
Duskpaw rolled a 13! (Caught!)
Her ears flicked to the mouse as it tried to run, but she was quick to slam her paw down after she lunged toward it. When Hawkbite caught his prey, she heard him bite the neck of it (or at least she thought she did) so Duskpaw killed the mouse with one swift bite to the neck. "I got it!" awww they were heading back already? She was having fun!

"Oh, uh... good job!" Briarsplash called, feeling awkward that she missed her apprentice actually getting the mouse. She'd assumed it would've ran away by now.
Stars, why aren't you any good at this? Shape up!
Holding in her biting self doubt, the mentor muttered another congratulations and a promise to help Duskpaw further with hunting another time as she led them back to camp.

With a nod, Petalrot moves through the Heartlands and toward Shadow's Break just beyond.
"Shadow's Break," bug says, "excellent for hunting or herb gathering. You know how to hunt, I assume? See if you can catch something, we might as well look to bring some food back for the clan while we're out."
When they arrive at Shadow's break and Petalrot assumes that he has hunting training he cannot help but scoff. Will he admit to it, though? No, absolutely not! He would try to catch something running purely on instinct and the memory from previous patrols. Hopefully he didn't embarrass himself.
[ Batpaw rolled a 2 to track prey. ]
The winds were not in his favor today. No matter how much he hunkered down and scented the air for some semblance of prey animal nothing came. So he just sits up with a 'hmph' and glances back to his mentor, expression a bit sour.
"Nothing's around. How am I to hunt when these grasses are barren?"

[roll to locate: 12] "Try again," Petalrot says, unfazed by the apprentice's sour attitude. "You've only tried for a moment, look around you, use more than just your nose." If he gave up after one try then that was certainly a sorry excuse for a future warrior. What would he do if this were a solo hunt? Would he give up and return to camp empty pawed? No, that won't happen on bug's watch. Flicking an ear toward a sound - a scuttling downwind, behind them - Petalrot levels bug's green gaze neutrally on the apprentice. "Do you hear that?" Bug asks, "catch it."
There's a hint of challenge, a desire to goad Batpaw into action. If the apprentice were to stubbornly sit on his ass and not preform, they could take this back to camp and Batpaw could spend the next three days tending to the elders.

. . .
(cont. here!)
Gracklepaw nodded at Slytiger’s words, as a smile crept up his features. It was nice to have such a supportive mentor, especially since Slytiger seemed confident in Gracklepaw. “Don’t worry, Slytiger! I’ll make sure to take up every opportunity that I can from now on to become a warrior.” He vowed enthusiastically.
The black tom followed his mentor out of the camp. Although he’d been yet to be given a tour with all the landmarks, he was somewhat familiar with the regular territory from the patrols he’d been on, and also Magpiepaw.
He was already used to the feel of the marsh and the pine needles beneath his pads, but that was pretty much it. Oh, and the Waterbarn.
When they finally arrived at Shadow’s Break, Gracklepaw’s blue eyes flickered everywhere. He could sense so many things! The smells or herbs and prey and mushrooms- and more herbs. The expressive apprentice didn’t try to hide his wonder from the landmark. The feeling of the sun peeking through the pines and beaming down onto his black pelt was a welcome surprise compared to the usual pines blocking the sun.
He also didn’t fail to notice the fallen log and the trickling stream beneath it. It was probably just run of the mill things to the average ShadowClan cat. But Gracklepaw was not an average ShadowClan cat. He was a former loner after all, and he was easily impressed with practically everything this Clan had to offer.
“So, Slytiger, does this place have a purpose? Is there a reason it smells like herbs so strongly?” He asked, once he’d finsihed taking in the view and turned back to his mentor.

Briarsplash bounded in, casting glances behind her to make sure her Clanmate was following. The last time she was here was when she was on a hunting patrol with Duskpaw, her apprentice, for the first time. She nearly cringed at the memory — her blatant avoidance of the apprentice remained as an embarrassment, yet something she could still understand quite easily. Regardless, she shouldn't be dwelling on it now — they had a job to do.
"I'll head off here," she meowed to Wolfhowl, pointing her tail to the left of the path, "and you can head the other way. It's some good newleaf weather today — hopefully, we'll find plenty of prey about."
With a firm nod, she confirmed her action with him before starting off towards the trees. Tasting the air, it flooded her senses with refreshing scents — greenery, budding plants, rain in the distance, and... ah, yes. Prey.
Her sensitive ears picked up the soft scuttling of some critters in the distance; Briarsplash began to slink through the undergrowth, as light on her paws as the big she-cat could be in search of her prize.
Wolfhowl headed to the right of the path. He saw a bird swooping for a patch of herbs. He pounced at the bird, keeping it away from the herbs, but not catching it. At least he didn't land in herbs.

Tch! The Lord of Darkness could do something as simple as hunt. He had been on a hunting patrol before and though that patrol had never actually returned successfully he had at least a bit of experience. Scoffing in response he tries again to source the scurrying that bug can hear.
[ Batpaw rolled an 11 to locate prey. ]
With the assistance from his mentor he's able to find it. The scuttling. The quick footsteps. An ear twitches as he listens to the creature move through the brush and wide, orange hues are locked onto it's location. His body moves to meet the same direction of his head, almost owlish in nature, and he decides he accepts this challenge. Slipping into the shadows, he prowls along silently, the movement of his tail behind him the only giveaway that he was still nearby bug at all.
[ Batpaw rolled a 20 to catch mice. ]
Two of them. There were two. He realizes it once he's upon them. It was the warmer time of the year-- perhaps they were mates. Batpaw didn't care. They would be dead. Grinning maliciously to himself he creeps forward upon them, gaze still wide and maniacal, biding his time. Claws unsheathe into the earth beneath silently. His breath was slow. His tail was only twitching a bit, compared to the clumsy lashing from earlier. Totally in the zone. He jumps at the mice with outstretched claws, one paw for each head slamming down upon them. The rough movement is all it takes to snap their necks, stop their movement. He can't help but turn back toward where he knows Petalrot is watching, maw pulled in a confident grin.
"Easy."
