Alright, ceremonies done. She could get to the meat of the meeting, and then go deal with the threat that was lurking at their borders.
"Alright, listen up, 'cause this is important." Bumblestar stepped to the edge of the Stormcrest again, looking down at her Clan. "First things first, Mudhound 'n-" don't look, don't choke "-'n Wolfhive found a spot in the Outskirts a while back. Real peaceful place. It's a cave tucked behind a pair of waterfalls, covered in all sorts of plants on the inside. It's a little close to a Thunderpath, enough to be able to hear it but not too close that it'll really be affected by Twoleg activity. My son 'n Mudhound already left their prints on the wall there. Took it for ThunderClan. Mudhound showed it to me a little bit ago. Ain't decided on a name yet." She could picture it - two large paws next to her smaller one. "Once I've handled what needs to be handled, I'd like to take the whole Clan over 'n let my Hornets leave their marks, too. A way of honoring them without further marking up Willow's Rise, 'n officiating it as part of our territory."
Then maybe... just maybe, she could further consider the thing she'd been thinking about lately but hadn't been able to bring herself to do. She'd come this far; even just thinking about it felt like rolling over and showing her belly like a cowardly dog.
There was still one more thing that needed to be done before she could even go through with it, anyway.
Deep breath in. Deep breath out. "But before that happens, we've got a problem at Smallpines. A patrol ran into otters at the border and were attacked. One was nearly killed. There's four at least 'n we need 'em gone." Maybe make it RiverClan's problem instead of theirs. "So Spiderthroat, Mudhound, Tigerpelt, Sunstreak, Ravenfire, Flintclaw, Violetfreckle, 'n Dragonflycliff! You lot're with me."
Signaling the end of the meeting, Bumblestar hopped down the Stormcrest and nodded to the camp's entrance. "We're headin' out now. So Let's go."

Cicadapaw listened intently as Bumblestar continued with the announcements. A new place to explore? That was always exciting. From the sound of it, it seemed beautiful - maybe even special. He wondered what they’d end up calling it. "Maybe something like Hornet falls?" He wondered to himself quietly. The hornets were going to leave their pawprints there in remembrance, after all. Or was that too obvious?
He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he almost missed her next short announcement about the otters. Someone almost got killed by one? How had he missed hearing about that?
And just like that, the meeting was over, and her listed patrol was heading out right then. "Wha-" That was quick. He stood up as the leader and the warriors gathered before they headed out. "All of you, stay safe! Especially you, Dad!"

Sprucey not answering questions? Yeah that tracked. Giggling the hornet explained with a grin "Yeaaaaaaah I dont think Sprucey likes talking or emotions so he always acts like he doesnt have them but he thinks and cares a lot! He just pretends not to for some reason, I dont get it. Break up your questions into short important ones that can be answered with one word or ask him to show not tell! He's better with that~" Sprucejumper was very skilled and just didnt like talking, which made him a poor mentor but Mudhound just KNEW he could be a great teacher! He just needed a student who didnt need instructions but examples. For Quackers however who was all talk "Look at his eyes, he feels a lot through them and also hes always very honest when he does speak~" and here came the devil right now!
Awwwwww Sprucey was so GRUMPY today! Poor guy, Mudhound needed to cuddle that right outta him!
Shuffling over and enveloping the (forever) smaller cat in a huge the tripod purred deeply and chirped a "Heya!!! Sprucey whatcha doing heading out during a meeting! Theres gonna be fun things announced I want you to hear so we can all go later!" Mudhound was pretty sure their old apprentice would LOVE the cave thingie for how quiet and calm it was. "So Quackers as I said Sprucey was my first proper apprentice and now youre another! Quack-prentice~ If you can be as good as a hunter as him Im sure you'll be warrior in no time, Sprucey hunts all the time I bet he was planning to hunt~" A lick to the ear. "You need to relax more all work-work-work makes life not fun."
Another not fun thing was the topic of Wolfhive and, their face turning sad, the tripod nodded. "Yeah she's probably thinking about Woofie... Grief is.... long lasting and I did something that helps but also makes the hurt more for a bit. Like herbs, herbs hurt going on but helps healing. I still get sad sometimes too." Or at least thats what Mudhound hoped they did rather then just making the mental wound more raw and real. The cave was supposed to be closure not a bad reminder.
Speaking of the cave. "Sprucey once its open to the clan you HAVE to check out the cavey thing you'll love it. Its all quiet and calm and cool like you like and theres interesting things in it! We'll go together soon later ok?
For now though we can totally learn about fighting big predators! Im great fighting big predators! I dunno if I passed that on proper to Sprucey but he'd be great at it! Come on lets go real quick before I have to go on this patroly thing~ Quickquickquickquick!" Bumblestar would no doubt get briefly distracted by Stuff and leader Things before the patrol went, especially given not all cats were present at the meeting and needed wrangling, they could manage~
Cicadakit stilled as Spiderthroat followed him to the front and attempted to tame his wild fur, amber eyes widening slightly as he turned to look at him. He was happy just to know Spiderthroat was there watching this big moment in his life, but that- that was a move he'd seen countless other parents do for their kits. His little heart swelled with a feeling he didn't quite know how to describe, happy tears pricking at his eyes. To other kits, it was embarrassing, but this meant more to Cicadakit than anyone probably realized. "Thanks, Dad." He murmured before Bumblestar continued and he had to return his gaze to the leader perched upon the stormcrest. He puffed his chest, knowing his dad was watching.
~~~
Cicadapaw. That was his name now. Normally, he'd be way more excited, but even he could tell Bumblestar was bothered by something. She seemed off, even though he could tell she was trying her best to act unaffected. He turned his gaze briefly back to Spiderthroat, gauging whether he was worried or not, before Bumblestar named all of their mentors and he went off to greet his.
Cicadapaw turned his amber gaze to Pineblossom as she walked over, offering a small smile in greeting to the warrior. Hopefully, they would get along well enough.
Was Ms Bumble okay?
She had hesitated weirdly and looked, like, freaked out... maybe?
Was that the right word?
There's not really anything Butterflypaw can do, though.
She just hopes Ms Bumble's... Okay.
Ms Bumble's gone through a lot in the past few moons.
Butterflypaw, though, can't do much.
She'll just worry about cheering, for now. "Frostpaw, Ghostpaw, Drizzlepaw, Ivypaw, Rosepaw, Mallowpaw, Oakpaw, Honeypaw, Hollypaw!" And now obviously the best one of the group(she is so glad he's back) "Cicadapaw! CICADAPAW! CICADAAAPAAWWWW!"
The tom did nothing more than let out a gentle chuff. Resuming his action for a moment before stepping back and giving Cicadakit his momentary spotlight. Unsure how to respond to the gentle 'thanks dad' because that right there was what he was avoiding for so long. Why? A good portion of it was the fact that he was taking care of kits that were not his. The other? Most likely fear. The fear of loosing one of them. He wouldn't know what to do. It would most likely end with blood on his paws. But he finds himself caring less and less about the consiquences as long as his kits were safe. Because they were his kits now.
He'd tell them one day. That they weren't in any way shape or form related to him. And the thought of how they would react invoked a new deep fear within the pits of his stomach and soul. But that was a problem for later. A problem he could prepare for, and prep for. Every problem had a solution, it just depended on how you went about preparing for the problem.
A problem that continued to crop up, one that he hadn't prepared for, was Bumblestar. She was slowly coming apart at the seams. She was drowning in grief and she refused to grab his paw for support. No matter how many times he'd offered, no matter how many times he'd tossed himself into the sea to attempt to help. All his offers were met with silence. Stubborn, idiotic silence. He noticed her hesitancy, he noticed her pause, to realize that someone wasn't there. The stutter in her voice going somewhat un noticed to a few. Not him. He'd been there, in that grief. He allowed it to swallow him whole as he did nothing more than lay in the rolling waves. It took strength to get out, strength that you either had, or you borrowed. Bumblestar needed to borrow.
As his son's name was called and announced, Spiderthroat hollered over the crowd, almost matching Butterflypaw's sheer volume as well. "CICADAPAW." he barked once the other apprentices new names slipped from his maw as well. With that, the calico gave his daughter an amused side glance. A general questioning 'oh is that so?' amusement.
Than. She continued. Ears perking forwards as she spoke up of a Cave. He hadn't heard of this...or he had. Memory was lost on him these past few moons. It had been hectic attempting to catch up (which could easily be viewed by their sad prey pile. He would have to get his act together and get a hunting patrol together soon.) Hearing her talk about her family, both Mudhound and Wolfhide made the tom take a step forwards. Walking past Cicadapaw.
Slowly making his way towards the front as she continued to speak about pawprints, and it being tucked behind two waterfalls. Wonder if that was what he'd bumped into with those foxes. Not many places had two waterfalls. At least that he could remember. His eye's narrowing as he kept pace with how she was speaking with each pawstep. Until eventually, she announced the Otters. His steps stilled. But they didn't halt. Ears straightening as he heard his name. Good. He'd help with pest control. Otters wouldn't be easy, that's for sure.
He stopped only when she'd stepped off the Stormcrest, and in suit, he followed behind her. Only a pawstep behind. Ready to slay whatever it was he was ordered to. Stalling only minimally when Cicadapaw spoke up. Shooting the younger tom a quick small smile and stopping. Only for a few seconds. Quickly whispered, gently rushed. Only he could hear.
"Be sure to watch after your sisters."
And with that. Spiderthroat followed Bumblestar towards what could be his final hours.
This wasnt the type of bad news they were expecting.
Nettlescratch turned to see Dragonflycliff, mouth agape.
“No..” they whispered to themself.
Quickly, they approached their best friend, careful not to bump into any other cats. They had to force tears back right now — their best friend could die. They didn’t want her to die. That would be.. really, really bad. What would they even do?
“Dra- Dragonflycliff.. be safe. Please.” they mewed softly to her, attempting to hide their childish trembling.
Dragonflycliff listened on to the meeting as the cats had apparently found some nice place. She knew that Bumblestar wasn't really okay with Wolfhive, but she knew that would be a nice place. So she just smiled.
And then... problem? Small pines? That was weird. OTTERS? Oh dear. And then names were called. Maybe not her. She waited... Names... 'Dragonflycliff' Oh. Ohhh no. Her? Nettlescratch was clearly worried. "I'm not going to lie to you and say I'll probably be perfectly fine. But I'll try my best."
The newest update... Some cave as a new part of the territory? Flintclaw was curious, but his mind was quickly kicked into gear when the otters were mentioned. A growl escaped his throat at the thought of the river-rats. He would not be leaving this fight without some injury, but he felt pretty confident with the group that Bumblestar had chosen. Those things would pay for attacking his clanmates.
His tail lashed behind him and his ears pinned back as he followed his leader. A quick glance at Smokepaw as he passed. "When I get back, I'll make sure your training is started properly." He told the young cat before continuing on Spiderthroat and Bumblestar's tail. Surely, he would come back fine, maybe a little sore and scratched up. Four otters against eight fierce wild cats? This couldn't go wrong.
Bumblestar started the meeting with reassignments, and Mallowswarm made sure to listen as the unfortunate young cats were paired with new mentors. She didn't expect she would get one- she had just been given an apprentice at the last meeting, and while cats like Wolfhive may have had multiple at once, she doubted the leader would trust a newly-made warrior like her with more than one- but still, it would be embarrassing if she did and didn't notice. She remembered the meeting where she had been made a warrior, when she hadn't been listening during the reassignments and wasn't sure if she'd been given a new mentor or not. It had worked out that time, but it wouldn't always. It was best to pay attention.
Unsurprisingly, her name was not among the mentors listed. Bumblestar moved on to the apprentice ceremonies, calling up the kits that would start their training. There were a lot; Mallowswarm replayed the names in her mind, counting them. Drizzlekit, Hollykit, Rosekit, Honeykit, Oakkit, Mallowkit-
Mallowkit.
Mallowswarm felt a prickle of discomfort as the kits stepped up to the Stormcrest and Bumblestar bestowed them their apprentice names. Mallowkit was Mallowpaw now. The feeling grew as she imagined the new apprentice with her name. Well, not her name, but her old one; the one she had held for the majority of her life. The one she had grown to loathe but that had defined her for so long. The thought of another holding it felt wrong. She knew her feelings were irrational; it wasn't her name any more, this Mallowpaw had every right to it. Besides, wasn't there also a Foxpaw? Her sister's name had been claimed by another as well. That was just how it worked.
Trying to ignore her discomfort, Mallowswarm watched Nettlepaw and Beechpaw step up to the Stormcrest to receive their warrior names. They made their oaths, promising to protect the clan to their dying breath, and she suddenly realised that when she'd become a warrior she had never sworn her loyalty to ThunderClan. Her bond to Wolfhive had acted as her oath; that was what Spiderthroat had said. She supposed it made sense in some way, but still, she wondered why he hadn't made them undertake the traditional vow.
Anyway. Mallowswarm drew herself back into the present as the apprentices were announced as warriors. "Beechray! Nettlescratch!" she cheered along with her clanmates, voice loud and clear. She recalled the pride she had felt when she had received her warrior name; they must be feeling the same. This was the most important ceremony of their lives, and she would be damned if she didn't make an effort to celebrate their accomplishments.
She was feeling lighter as the cheers died down. But then Bumblestar started speaking again. One of the names that came out of her maw threw Mallowswarm off balance. Wolfhive. Her heart started to race; she unconsciously leaned forward as she listened to the leader, mind abuzz with questions. Why had her mentor been mentioned? He was dead, he was buried, his spot as Head Hornet had been replaced, what was there to say about him? What had happened?
A cave. He and Mudhound had found a cave. They had left their prints on the wall, and Bumblestar wanted the clan to come and the Hornets to leave their prints on there, too. Mallowswarm swallowed as she thought about the way Wolfhive had been in his last moons- sick and gaunt, barely able to leave his nest. Had he come there while he was ill? Had he known, even then, that he wouldn't survive the plague? Had he wanted to leave one last mark on the world before he passed?
Lost in thought, Mallowswarm almost missed Bumblestar's next announcement. ...The border and were attacked. For a moment, she didn't know what Bumblestar was talking about, but then it hit her. Otters. There were otters at the border, and they had attacked a patrol. The leader was calling up cats to help drive them out.
She was relieved she hadn't been chosen, something that sent a jolt of guilt through her. Her fear of battle might not be as strong as when she was younger, she might be willing to fight for her clan, but she still didn't want to enter a battle with creatures she had never encountered before. She didn't even know what otters were. All she knew was that they must be fierce if they had nearly killed a warrior. Then again, she didn't know how big the patrol was, and maybe they had been caught by surprise. She couldn't make a proper judgement with the information she had. As Mallowswarm watched Bumblestar jump off the Stormcrest and lead the way out of camp, she just had to hope the cats she was bringing would be enough to defeat them.
