"Ivythorn, where have you been?" the gray tabby hissed. "Blazingnight was named leader while you were out 'patrolling the border' all day." He towered over the smaller she-cat, then shook his head and stepped back. "You can't keep sneaking off for hours on end, Ivythorn. Don't forget what happened to Duskflower. Starclan knows if she's still alive," he said.
Ivythorn let out a small sigh of relief. She was glad that it was the gray tabby instead of almost anyone else. At least he was sort of kind, right? "I-I'm sorry, I had noticed one of the borders hadn't been marked for a while... It took a while to mark it all by myself," she lied. She was terrible at lying, and hoped to Starclan that he didn't notice her little fumbles.
"Blazingnight won't like you staying out all day. Don't make it a habbit," Badgerstripe growled. He then glanced around, then scratched her shoulder with his long claws. "And don't think I'll ever be nice to you just because you're Duskflower's sister." He then left her there.
Ivythorn woke the next morning well before dawn, and snuck out through the dirtplace. She winced a bit as a bramble scraped against her new cuts, and licked them a bit when she got away from the camp enough. The she-cat then padded her way to the meeting spot with Bane of Hunters, feeling happy to finally have a friend again. When she got there, she waited silently.
|
'This one should make sure Ivythorn make home.' The very thought of her going through the darkened setting of land alone made him want to turn his paws around and go after her.
The loner took a breath to calm himself. She would be fine; she was a warrior after all. All the stories he heard of them were that they could take care of themselves so why did he worry so much about that she-cat? It was a question he could not answer, but there was something else that would draw his mind away from her at the moment. His belly gave a rumble and then he realized that he had not eaten today. He would have to make up for it with a night hunt, keeping some room to the side for the morning prey with Ivythorn as he remembered his word to her.
Despite the lack of light, there was not a lack of smell and the movement of prey was made greater for the still silence from the soft hills. With a full belly of a pair of mice and a barely entrenched rabbit, Bane of Hunters made his way into the old badger set. 'Use scent of danger, ward off danger.' He recalled his lessons from a loner like himself as he laid down to resting his head on his paws. His eyes were set on the entrance of the burrow. The image of a tortoiseshell she-cat came crawling into view. "I-Ivythorn?" His head perked up as he inquired to the movement.
The movement, however, was not there, just a shadow cast by a passing cloud over the moon. 'This one swear...' He shook his head. 'Prey must upset sense. Sleep Bane of Hunters.' He laid his head back down and drifted off into the resting embrace.
The soft warmth touching his paws woke him off the starting day. The loner blinked a few times, trying to push the sleep away. 'Word given, meet Ivythorn.' He stretched and was off on his way back to the Shadowclan border, taking a moment to catch a rabbit along the way with some ease. 'Rabbit tired morning too?'
Upon reaching the crest, of which he could see the spot he met Ivythorn at, he spied a cat waiting. The pelt looked like hers, and that was enough to draw him towards the cat. Every pawfall closer he could tell it was her and it made him feel warmer as dropped the rabbit between them. "Prey for us, Bane of Hunters promise." He purred heartily at her.
Then his nose twitched and that made him scent for something. The emerald gaze of the Tom looked at her; a concern was in them, but it was covered heavily by seriousness. "Ivythorn hurt?"

Squirrelleap prodded a leaf absently with her paw. "Come on, Fleetear, I strive to irritate." She glanced at the trunk of a tree, then back to her mate. "I should start hunting, actually..." I shouldn't tell him yet.

Thoughts clashed in Fleetear's head, as much as he wanted the opportunity to hunt with Squirrelleap again, he felt she still needed her space. Plus, it does feel like she's not saying everything, but he's not as prying about secrets as she is. But, what if this is the last time for another long while that they will talk like this, he felt he had to say something. "Oh, okay. Uh, I'll be around, you know... And, how about, when your ready of course, we, ah, start over? I mean, not start over, but, you know, get back together, and maybe, try settling down with kits again?..." He felt shy in asking, his pelt growing hot as he mewed, but he wanted to at least have the chance of feeling some hope between them, if it wasn't too much to ask for.

"Oh, thanks Bane of Hunters," she said happily. She then pinned her ears at his question. "I-It's just a scratch," she said hesitantly. She nuzzled her good morning to the large tom. "How was the badger den?" she asked. "Was it creepy? Were there old cat bones?" she asked, trying to change the subject and also legitimately wanting to know.
She then backed up a bit and sat down, wrapping her tail around her paws. "Sorry, I've never seen a badger den before. It just sounds creepy and scary," she admitted. "It must be nice being a loner, or anything but a warrior." She gazed in the direction of the Twoleg Place, wondering how her sister was getting on. "Must be nice, Duskflower..." she mumbled, hoping it was too quiet for Bane to hear.

She fibbed, it might be good enough to limp back in a few minutes. "It... happens sometimes." She mumbled, then turned her head to look away, the movement made her cringe again. Though she didn't let it hold her back. She began to push herself up into a sitting position with her left foreleg, it was slow work and she grit her teeth to suppress the pain. Then she looked over pitifully at the tom. She felt weak and exposed, embarrassed as if she'd be shaven. "It's not your fault." She continued really quickly, then looked away again. Her skin felt hot and prickly beneath her fur and her stomach twisted as her feelings spiraled into the emotion. Her thin tail wrapped itself around her body and she shivered. As the evening set in further so did the cold. She could almost see her breath now, they had really better be getting back to camp or else they'd both catch a cold. Damp from the mud and cold from the air was not a good mixture.

Before the black and white feline could answer, he had already blamed himself for her injury acting up. I should've been more careful, she probably thinks I have the brain of a flea, he thought bitterly to himself before composing his mind enough to listen to what she had to say next. Even with her saying it wasn't his fault, he still felt accountable for what had happened and it showed in his olive green hues. "How often is sometimes? he asked finally, searching her gaze for any sign that she'd be alright. Although before she could answer, he was back on his paws and wrapping his tail around her back softly. It was an attempt to comfort the she-cat, he wasn't one to shy away from small gestures such as this. Jaguarclaw felt her shiver and simply laid his tail firmer on her back, staring at her hopelessly. We have to get back before she's hurting and sick he confirmed with himself. As if this were the sign he needed, the Bengal was suddenly confident and offering his shoulder for her to lean on. "We need to get back to camp, so please allow me to help you," he offered politely now. His old, gentlemen-like deep tone coming back to his voice as his instincts told him to help this she-cat now. Of course he didn't want to hurt her pride, but he needed her to move past that now more than ever, even if that meant they wouldn't talk after all this was over.

"Uh... Sure..." The tabby batted the leaf away and straightened up, her right ear pricket towards a tree. Flicking her tail for Fleetear to wait, she walked quietly towards the tree, gratefull that it was leaf-fall and she didn't stick out at clearly at usual. Spotting the source of the noise she had hear, a mouse, she crept to it and caught it on her paw, breaking its neck with a blow to it's head. Sorry, little mouse. "Sorry about that, had to get this," she said, setting down the mouse.

'Just scratch but know wound.' He pulled the want to know who did this to her, she seemed happy he was here and that her barrage of questions caused a purr of amusement rumble from him. "No cat bones, badger been terrible badger this one guess." He returned the nuzzle back to here before laying down.
The loner tilted his head with confusion. "Being err...Loner own challenge like warrior this one think. Why Ivythorn think way?" His question was directed at her but he saw her attentions elsewhere.
He followed the gaze the best he could, ears twitching to a soft mew from the she-cat. 'Mind wanders to someone.'

"I've heard stories of how great it was once to be a warrior in a clan, but now... Now everyone seems different from then. My own sister left our clan to be a kittypet. Surely a loner would grant a bit more respect than that," she said. She then realized she may have insulted the tom. "Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you or anything, I actually think it would be cool to be a loner."
There she went. The embarrassed chest licks began with that comment. Why was she so awkward? Especially around Bane? Well, for starters she had only just met the large scruffy tom. Or what about the fact that he was huge compared to her, and the scruff made him look slightly scary? Not really to her though. She thought the scruff was cute, like a rather large kit rolling around with his littermates.
"What is it like to be a loner anyway?" she asked, folding her tail over her paws and tilted her head curiously.
