The subject of mortality was something Firehawk knew well. Throughout his life it had followed him-- he still vividly remembered how his mother was struck down by a monster, his kits who were lost to a fire, his son who drowned and the other who was torn apart by rogues. The hundreds, if not thousands, of Clan-mates who'd come and gone through RiverClan over the years.

It was apart of life. He had accepted it.

Snakepaw's paws in his fur was a distant sensation, something he wasn't completely registering as he took in the unfortunate prognosis. He had figured based on Snakepaw's initial concerns he might've been sick, but the prospect of it being fatal hadn't occured to him until now.

He glanced over at the bloodied mess he'd made on the nearby ground, painfully aware of the content within it now that his mind had cleared. "How much time would you wager I have?" He didn't want to die, but.. given the circumstances he had to wonder if fighting this was worth it. The blood on the ground that came from within, he couldn't wrap his mind around how that'd even be treated. "I think.. for now, if you're fine with it, we can do treatment for the pain and strength." He didn't want to be stuck in his nest anytime soon, not if they could put it off for a bit.

Skies, what would he tell his son?

Kits. Stars kits. Time for the helpers to step in because Snakepaw was starting to struggle to keep his temper. Leaning over to Rowanmist and Petuniapaw he let out a whisper,
"Can you distract the fuzzbutts so I can check them in peace? Like any kit that asks for help as long as I get to check them over I dont care just keep them from irritating me to death. Especially the tantrum-y ones. I dont care how you do it just do it quickly please."
Hopefully thay'd move fast though because Snakepaw was certain it wasnt acceptable to punt a baby.

Poke for lumps and out of place bones, sniff check for sickness and infection, check over the kits ears and eyes for issues, and ear to the chest to listen for stutters in breathing and their heart. Snakepaw was getting pretty good at this routine now and if there was something wrong with this kit he was confident he'd find it. Unless they squirmed or pulled away or something then he'd have no clue.

Ah yes he said no and so there was a baby tantrum.
Snakepaw really didnt care if he insulted the huffy little thing by telling it the truth and saying he was fine for help and there was little she could do but if they wished to get upset that was on her, it was an attitude that would no doubt not last into apprenticeship. So as uninterested as he was the tom was curious about why the kit had collected another kit and was doing those weird paw gestures... Ah yes deaf baby. Now that was something good to keep an eye on.

Reaching over to the deaf kitted Snakepaw consciously softened his irritable expression to not startle him and kept his out reaching paw soft asking "Is there any way to communicate with him? Does he understand how to read lips yet?" Out of the corner of his mouth to the snappy kit that was helping. To the deaf kit he slowly and clearly spoke hoping they could at least get some information "Im the clans medicine cat. Im here to look at you and make sure you're ok. Can I examine you?"

Finally something actually happening that wasnt horribly bad and terrifying or not an issue at all. Snakepaw would happily deal with a thorn right now for something to do simply to deal with an issue though he'd normally tell the kit to have the queens deal with it.
"Right let me take a look if were lucky it wont bleed much and I dont even need to use herbs though if you've managed to get it infected I will."
Quickly running through his tests Snakepaw caught the kits paw in his and deftly swooped in to nab the thorn and removed it from the pad. From here he'd quickly clean it and pull back for a second to examine it for bleeding. Hopefully he didnt need to use a cobweb on it though.

This one was absolutely tiny, though from their shaky steps it was probably because of how young they are. Still the knowledge this one could just be squished was kinda terrifying. It remained to be seen if they were more tolerable then the older fuzzballs.

It was hard to examine this one given they were around the size of his paw but Snakepaw managed checking for lumps and irregularities, smelling for sickness (this kit smelled like milk), looking at eyes and ears for developing issues and listening to their heart and lung to make sure that was working all right. If all this turned out well the kit should be healthy and good to be released. Hopefully.

The kit could go bother Rowanmist or Petuniapaw if they wanted before Snakepaw finished and started his group lesson.

The elder got a little more toleration though. Snakepaw sighed looking over the chaos and shook his head. "Im sure you actually have some knowledge and might be able to help but while this is giving me a headache its handled for now thank you." Stars when Snakepaw was a kit who thought he was a she cat he wanted to be like his mother and one day wanted to have kits. Snakepaw was so glad he outgrew that.
"I trust you to be smart enough to have an idea if somethings wrong so if there's any issues I should take a look at? I dont care if you think its too minor Im here to help but if you think you're fine I think I can trust an elder to be wise about their health...."

Softkit nodded eagerly and sat as still as she could. Snakepaw sniffed her and looked at her closely and examined her, but Softkit stayed frozen. Her mind wandered pretty soon. What would she learn? Maybe she'd learn so much that she'd become a medicine cat apprentice! And then she'd learn even more! And she'd be the best medicine cat in the clans!

Silvercreek huffed, the sound resembling creaking joints. "I'll survive, yeah. Now, go off and be rude to someone else. Those kits ain't gonna whine to no one else except you and the queens."

She knew that Snakepaw was known for his venomous tongue so she wasn't exactly angry. "You can gesture to him, I tried explaining what your gonna do." She curled her tail around his shoulder as if gesturing him to sit still. She knew he wouldn't hear but she mumbled for more of her own benefit. "It's okay". She turned back to Snakepaw. "I know there's no way you can make him hear but is there anyway you can help him?"

Fernkit, not understanding what was happening, wished to hear, as he had wished for his whole life,which wasn't that long, for he was just a kit. He was confused. What was he supposed to do? He gazed up at Snakepaw, trying to understand who he was.

Leafkit nodded and held still. It was better if this was going to be over quick, she decided. "Can I learn something after?" Leafkit asked eagerly. She coulnd't stop herself from asking the question, she was just so interested in herbs.

Lizardpaw's muscles wee so sore. She didn't realize, but she had been overworking herself. She passed out immediately almost every night. And suffered nightmares.
"I think I might be sick. I hope not. I would not be able to get work done. It's probably nothing." she muttered.

The baby sat still and Snakepaw couldnt find any issues so far so that seemed fine at least. "Alright youre fine and healthy feel free to play with or ask Rowanmist or Petuniapaw questions for a bit until Im done and then Ill teach you some herbs and stuff. Just remember to be careful and stay safe and in camp.... Actually maybe stay under cover and avoid open areas." Softkit was so small the medicine cat was almost worried she'd get napped from camp by a wayward bird or a strong breeze but hopefully a helper could keep them occupied.

"Why in the world the kits think I, a known jerk, would be a good cat to bother if they cant take being snapped at I will never know. If youre scared of being bitten dont poke a bear but be quiet and reasonable around it." Snakepaw got the feeling the elder wasnt that amused by his temperament but whatever, the tom wasnt selected for this position for his bedside manner and even snappish he was good at his job.
"Well if you think youre find I wont bother you more, come see me if that changes but otherwise stay safe."

Well that warranted a raised eyebrow was this kit usually so emotionally changeable? Whatever he wasnt going to look a gift over for thorns when it came with no reason for any issues seeded within "I accept your apology but just a piece of advice from someone who had to learn it the hard way; Even if you feel like you can do anything never assume you know everything or even anything for certain, not at your age. At some point in your life things are going to change suddenly and you'll quickly find nothings as you knew it, no clue when it'll happen but its pretty much inevitable for any cat thats not an idiot. You're real merit will come from adapting and overcoming to gain the knowledge that you can never assume you'll just know. That goes for everything from clan changing battles and events to even little assumptions like you made for a second back there. Think on it and lets focus on your friend.

He reached out with gentle paws and did his checks on the kitten focusing on looking at his ears to see if this was just a permeant thing or if there was maybe hope of fixing the issue before sitting back to think.
How to help a deaf kit? It wasnt like theres no hope of him being a warrior one day, Cottonstrike was completely deaf and did just fine until he disappeared but Snakepaw didnt have a clue how he got there.... He could read lips well enough to understand cats though and could even speak even if it was a bit odd. Yeah communication comes first.
"He cant understand lip reading and while gestures are fine to those that are close there's little chance of him managing to teach everyone them so while I'd encourage that in private focus on exercises like this." Snakepaw turned to the deaf kit after talking to Violetkit and spoke clearly (mainly so his mouth movements were correct) resting or pointing a paw at everything he named.

"Snakepaw" On himself "Violetkit" on the kittens friend "Fernkit" On the kitten "Herb, sky, ground." pointing at each in turn. After repeating this a frankly annoying amount of times the medicine cat finally stopped planting paws on the ground and asking "Snakepaw?" Cocking his head and shrugging looking around like he didnt know what thing that word was connected to. If the kit was smart enough to draw the line between the specific motion of his mouthing and what he pointed at he could learn the word and might even point to Snakepaw correctly. It wouldnt be a perfect fix but it'd be a start that even a kit could try.

Snakepaw knew holding this in the centre of the camp would attract cats but it was good to see that cats with issues could wander over on their own.
"Alright I'll take a look hopefully its just exhaustion or something of the sort but I can treat either options either way so dont let it stress you out."
Leaning in to sniff at the apprentice he frowned not discovering any sickness scent before realising what happened and shaking his head.
"Alright good news Lizardpaw you're not sick but you've deffinatly been working yourself too hard. Doing stuff for the clan is good but if you go too far you risk collapsing when the clan needs you. Im going to give you some herbs to bolster your strength and make you sleep so you actually rest but Im telling you you need to take a day off tomorrow. Hang out with friends make new ones I dont care but if youve run yourself ragged to the point of feeling sick you have to slow down." The tom handed her a leaf of burnet and two poppyseeds staring the apprentice down until she ate them. For stars sake Snakepaw was happy to see clan mates put in the effort for the clan but this was going a bit far...

Lizardpaw solemnly accepted the herbs without complaining about the taste. The demoted warrior had no friends and was reluctant to take the day off. She needed to prove herself. But she just nodded a thank you.
