Before Breezepaw could show her his hunting crouch, Owltalon started to speak. Irisfrost turned her attention towards the deputy as she placed the gathered cats in groups. She and Breezepaw were split up, which she had expected, but it was a shame that she hadn't gotten to correct his crouch before the event started. Oh well, she was sure he would be fine. Hunting came fairly naturally to most cats, and he had been paired up with two Lionhearts who she trusted would help him out.

"Remember to keep low to the ground and your weight even, step quietly and keep your tail off the ground," Irisfrost told her apprentice, words rushing out quickly. There was more she wanted to tell him, but they didn't have any more time left. "If you have any questions, ask Brokenstream or Seabreeze. They'll help you."


With that, Irisfrost stood up and padded towards her patrolmates. Heroneye, Adderstrike and Beaverpaw; not cats she knew well, despite the first's Lionheart status. Hopefully they were good hunters. Irisfrost wasn't the most competitive cat, but she still didn't want them to go too badly. If they didn't catch much it would be bad for the clan. And for her pride, of course. Irisfrost wouldn't say she was an exceptional hunter, but she sure wasn't a bad one, and she didn't want to come home empty-pawed.

"Morning," she greeted her patrolmates. They just needed to wait for Adderstrike now.

“Um.. hello? Seabreeze and Brokenstream right?” He said trying to hide his nervousness from his idol Seabreeze… but meeting him in person… oh great Starclan this might not go well…

For the sheer reason that Wisteriawren's roleplayer was on hiatus and literally had no more time to write this post, the classic tabby trailed after Rowanmane with a happy, contented purr. Both he and Starrypaw were with her, and she could not be more delighted. (AKA, Owltalon was definitely a starsend).

Somehow, luck seemed to be on her side today. Even Wisteriawren herself was a bit shocked when she was able to pin down and successfully deliver the killing bite to a mouse she'd been stalking. Gold-flecked blue eyes were wide with more than a little wonder as she trotted back to Rowanmane and Starrypaw. She'd done it! Now she had to try not to squeal with happiness and scare away everything else.

He watched as WisteriaWren made her first attempt and…she caught it! His gaze immediately lit up with pride as he padded up to her and gave her head an affectionate lick. “Great job! Practicin’ paid off, huh?” he purred to her, his smile one of genuinely.

For his own attempt, he scented out a vole, quietly stalking it and…boom! It struggled under his claws before he gave the killing bite and lifted it up with a satisfied flick of his tail.

Alright it looked like it was time to go out and hunt. This was going to be fun. Adderstrike walked up to her group and purred out a friendly hello. "We got this team. I feel a little bad since I'm an extra and we might win from that... But its food! We all need it!" Adderstrike beamed. Was there even prizes? Who knows, Adderstrike didn't care!

So she wasn't sure how much she was supposed to go for but she went off anyhow. Adderstrike would blame this on leafbare but all and all she was having a terrible time tracking down prey. Was it the scent of all the cats stuck in her nose, or was it the thought of competition. Whatever it was Adderstrike wasn't coming up with much. In the end she only found three mice. A cat would have to eat two of these in a day to feel full. Disappointing.

Starrypaw wasn't sure she could say that her mentor still hadn't taught her how to hunt. It was embarrassing, but she knew how to observe and copy. Maybe she could mimic Wisteriawren and Rowanmane, huh?

She stared silently at them from behind a bush.
Following Rowanmane, she hid behind a plant whose name she had no idea about, and looked at Wisteriawren stalk a mouse. Huh...

Crouching... moving slowly, tail raised above the ground... her paws made no sound.
Quickly, she pounced from the ground and landed neatly on the rodent. And when she made the kill bite... she saw blood spurting out from the small injury. She turned around, already deciding that she'd had enough and she wanted to return to her nest, when Rowanmane detected a vole and left her with Wisteriawren.

He did the same, and successfully caught his prey. Now all eyes were on her, but she couldn't focus on her task.

Her nose twitched. She concentrated hard to find something, walking for a good amount of time with his clanmates before finding a little, faint trail. She was sure it was a squirrel, and a big one probably.

It was dark brown, with a long tail and short fur that seemed even softer than hers. She didn't want to look at the anticipating gaze of her mates, so she began to stalk the prey immediately to leave them. Without making a sound, she managed to sneak behind the squirrel, keeping upwind as she'd heard the elders tell her a few moons before.
When she got close enough, she hesitated for a moment and then jumped.

Roll dice: 9

Her claws suddenly closed around the flesh, but she didn't lower to give a bite. Instead, she stared at the creature struggling and squeaking for a couple of seconds, before it fled from her paws, leaving her empty-pawed.

She stared after the squirrel without turning toward her catmates.

"It did," came Wisteriawren's soft reply as Rowanmane licked her head. Her gaze was trained on him, expression warm and open and filled with undeniable affection. Going quiet so as to not disturb Rowanmane and Starrypaw for their own hunting rounds, the former kittypet finds her gaze drifting from her fellow warrior to the young apprentice she'd grown rather fond of. Her small smile faltered at the sight of Starrypaw's prey getting away from her - and the apprentice remaining stuck in place, staring after it.

Clawless paws were silent against the ground as Wisteriawren made her way over to stand beside the snow bengal, ducking her head in an attempt to nudge Starrypaw's cheek with her own. "Good job, you caught it in your first try. That's better than I did for my first, and second, and so many others." A smile, meant as encouragement before she moved on to give the she-cat space. "Try again if you're up for it."

After moving off, Wisteriawren lifts her head briefly to meet Rowanmane's gaze before refocusing on her surroundings. It would be nice if she could catch something else, too. Like... like... oh. A squirrel? Wisteriawren had almost not seen it because it was white. Oh, it was so beautiful, but Mother Nature had a way of making her creations such.

A couple heartbeats of hesitantly careful stalking later, Wisteriawren had a thanks to make and another piece of prey to show for her hunting.

Okay, everyone was here, and it looked like they were moving now.
Beaverpaw followed quietly for a bit, until they actually started hunting.

Once they did, he did too.
...Hopefully he doesn't mess up.

He smelt prey, that's for sure.
It's cold, so right now he could only find a vole.
He stalked towards it.

Heroneye nodded at Adderstrike. This was mostly about gathering food for the Clan, right? No need to get worked up over the details of the competition. The important thing was gathering as much food for the Clan as possible. In any case, the event had begun, and her patrolmates had gathered. It was time to start hunting.

After some time, she'd managed to catch two pieces of prey: a cardinal and a mouse. Not a lot, partially because of the growing coldness, as well as her own mistake; there had been another bird that she'd missed and startled away. Annoying, but no use crying over spilled milk... Well, hopefully her patrolmates were having better luck, anyhow.

"You've got it, champ." Brokenstream gave a welcoming purr to the apprentice as he joined them. "Now let's get hunting!" Seabreeze still hadn't joined their group, but he was sure the former Lionheart wasn't far behind. "Why don't you stick close to me, Breezepaw?" The Lionheart suggested before bounding off deeper into the forest.

With a rough start, Brokenstream was eventually able to catch a vole and a mouse. Not his favorite, personally, but it would do.
