Already filled with the off-feelings of Twilightstar's somewhat off call for the meeting, Toadpounce was all too aware of how the announcements began.
Wolffang... His amber eyes looked first up to Twilightstar where she sat on the large rock, his mind playing with the words he was sure he heard but doubted nonetheless; how could he not? He'd seen the former deputy die. He'd lived with the guilt of not being strong enough ever since. It didn't make sense to him.
It must be another Wolffang...or maybe I was hearing things, but each of those seemed as unlikely as the other. He switched his gaze around to the cats gathered around him.
Wolffang returned? Then he spotted the familiar large gray tom. He hadn't been particularly close to the tom, much less so during his time as their deputy but something in their fight for life and ultimate failure seemed to tie something of Toadpounce to Wolffang. There was a brief spark, something he recognized but hadn't quite been able to muster since the loss of his beloved mate then the trauma surrounding the dog and badger attacks and his subsequent injuries. There was something within him that was
fascinated. Wolffang had
died, Toadpounce had watched it happen. He'd
seen the destruction the dogs had wrought on Wolffang's body and the life drain from him through those injuries. It had been right here, not too many paces from exactly where he stood now that Wolffang had said his final good-byes. And Toadpounce hadn't been the only one to see it, it had happened for all to see. Yet there he was, undeniable, as though the dog attack was simply another memory of trial and battles hard fought, the only lasting affects being the scars on their bodies.
How is it possible? Is death less final than I'd thought? Was it Starclan that granted him more time or some other natural force? Could the same occur with prey? And would they need their body to return or could a new vessel be created? For brief moments, Toadpounce's mind began to venture to places it hadn't since his last experiments died from lack of his tending as he recovered from the badger attack and his own mental warfare. He let his inspiration run momentarily towards how he'd conduct his next experiments, but then... He sighed silently. While he experimented on only prey, the guilt of losing the last ones haunted him; it had to have been such a disgraceful way to go, and wasteful at that. With Leafbare coming, and Toadpounce otherwise being more hinderance than help, he knew he couldn't put time and resources into his silly experiments, no, those days were passed. He considered going over to Wolffang to welcome the tom back but thought against it, instead giving an awkward nod. He wasn't sure if the former deputy had caught it but he tried not to dwell on his awkwardness and instead turned his attention back to the apprentice ceremony and reassignments.
