Lionpaw sat back as the rest of his teammates worked hard on their skills with Ripplepelt. He snickered. Those slow-paws had nothing on him.

A skilled apprentice such as himself didn't need to train as hard as them-- especially not with something as basic as swimming. He was practially a natural at it. He survived a flood for Starclan's sake!

Just to prove it himself, Lionpaw lept into the water and swam around in circles with ease. Now, he was no graceful swan or anything, but he could push himself through the waves well enough. He was pretty boyant too all thanks to his thick fur, so keeping his head above the surface wasn't a problem for him.

It was getting his thick butt to swim faster than a bloated turtle that was troubling him. As his fur was soaked further it became heavier and harder to pull himself foward. It felt like something was trying to drag him away from where he wanted to go.

Eventually, Lionpaw had had enough of this "training" session and swam back to shore. He emerged from the water with fur so drenched it dragged against the dirt below him. Ripplepelt had been right about thick fur being heavy when wet. Lionpaw had struggled to pull himself out of the water and almost slipped back in, though in the end he did manage to get himself back on dry land. Afterward, he set to work grooming himself dry before anyone could notice him with his unflattering wet pelt.

@lesbianism (sorry this is so rushed! There's no need to repsond or anything since Lionpaw knows his basics and at the very least won't drown~)

The apprentices on her team seemed to have mastered treading water, so she decided to move on.

"Now that you know how to keep your head above the water, it's time to do some real swimming!" Ripplepelt swam deeper into the stream til her paws barely brushed the bottom. "To move faster in the water, you'll need to bring your paws up nice and high one after the other, then pull them back through the water til they're back underneath you. Your back legs are the same - pull them up towards your underbelly, then back behind you. Really put some power behind it - remember, it's a race!" she mewed. "While turning, you may instinctively try use your tail the way you normally would for balance. Unfortunately, it won't be much use to you in the water - if you want to turn in a direction, turn your head and your body will follow its lead!"

She left the team to get the hang of it for a few minutes, giving tips and more instruction where needed. All this swimming only makes me wish new-leaf would come sooner, Ripplepelt thought wistfully. After new-leaf came green-leaf, and there was nothing she loved more than cooling down in the water on a scorching day - and she didn't have it that bad compared to some of the thicker-coated cats. That reminded her...

"Something to keep in mind - you may feel light in the water, but wet fur is heavy fur!" she warned. "Especially for those of us with thick fur, it might be trickier to pull yourself up out of the water than you expect. You may want to practice pulling yourself up on a rock a few times before the battle."

Ripplepelt narrowed her eyes in thought. Was there anything she'd missed? I'm beginning to grow tired of the sound of my own voice, she thought wryly.

"Alright, I'm done talking your ears off now," she purred, hoping what she'd said hadn't gone into one ear and straight out the other. Now all that was left was to make sure everyone had the hang of it - then she could hand them off to Bluefang for some battle training.

Frostpaw obeyed, and with some effort got himself swimming further than the others.

Casting a side-glance at her assigned partner-in-teaching, Cherryswirl couldn't help it as her hackles began to rise with dismay, but she quickly laid them flat, biting back her own feelings about Sootpelt. "Sootpelt, greetings." It was... definitely a forced tone. Though, the rigid stance softens as she watches an apprentice run head-first into the other warrior. This managed to pull a purr from her throat. Now then. Planning.

"Alright, Treepaw, Summerpaw, Springpaw, Tansypaw and Charredpaw... What would you five like to do first? Fighting or swimming?" She turned a glance to Sootpelt, "Or, if you're alright with it, we could split the training? I figure the best cat you can demonstrate your moves on would be me - then, you could help me with swimming lessons and water rescue?" Best to mend bridges now, rather than later. Plus, Cherry could consider this to be a bit of catharsis therapy if anything. She smiled politely at Sootpelt, awaiting an answer from both her and the apprentices gathered around. She glanced over to Hawksun as he approached too, seeing if the warrior wanted to input their suggestion.

Hawksun didn't input rather he padded to Summerpaw and leaned over, whispering something into the apprentice's ear. "I'll be at my post then" Hakwsun grumbled. Padding away with a small nod at the other warriors.
Summerpaw sighed lightly and nodded. "Alright, be safe" Turning to the warriors in front of him Summerpaw scanned there pelts and sighed softly, "I'll do swimming if you want me to."

Swimming faster? Alright then, they'll try to do that! Paddling their legs, Sunsetpaw swam forward in a faster motion this time. Wonder if they'll ever learn how to dive deeper into the water and come back up...but they figured right now wasn't really the best time to try those types of things; especially since they're not really the best at holding their breath. They did remember when their head sunked into the water during the flood, it was not fun especially since they were sort of panicking if they remembered correctly? Yea...they can try diving another time, but right now they have to focus on the event! While happily swimming around, they wonder what kind of thing Bluefang is going to teach the team and what strategy the team should use; they can't let anyone pass through! That'll be bad! Sunsetpaw has turned themselves a few times in water before so they knew how to do that already. Turning themselves to a rock, they tried to pull themselves up from the water; they knew that water was heavying their fur so it was tricky to. It felt heavier than when they did it in the kit class though maybe that's because they're fur is thicker now or something like that; unsure. But they were able to pull themselves up at least!

Oh hey, there's Lionpaw! Isn't he supposed to be in the water with the rest? He's just sitting there grooming himself; well Sunsetpaw figured they should be minding themselves and not try to bother anyone with any stupid things that pop up in their mind and keep it to themselves. Anddd with that, they set themselves back in the water and started swimming like a fishy again! They never minded having wet fur and pretty sure they never will; swimming is fun for them and as a warrior, they predict they'll probably spend some of their free time swimming. Speaking of swimming, how would hunting fish in the water work? It probably isn't necesarry but it's still quite interesting to think about. Fish could eat fish and they swim to catch their prey so could cats catch swim by fishing? Probably'll be a bit harder to do than just sitting around waiting for a fishy fish to swim by. Now to wait for Bluefang to start the fighting lessons and the team'll be set! Maybe...they probably had to think of a proper strategy...what if...the team swims as fast as possible towards the opponent team but still saving some energy to fight with the other team and then one cats fights one other cat so it'll be a one on one thing and...uh...that's all Sunsetpaw's got for now, they'll try to think about that again later...

Ripplepelt watched on, pleased at the progress that the apprentices had made in such a short time. Sunsetpaw and Frostpaw were swimming like naturals. She would keep an eye on Troutpaw and Frecklepaw while they trained with Bluefang, but they seemed to be fine for now.

She narrowed her eyes at Lionpaw, sitting on the bank of the stream. His swimming was fine, but his attitude and work ethic could use a little work - while his fellow apprentices practiced he groomed himself, clearly above it all.

"All right," she called, "I'll hand off to Bluefang for your battle training now. I'm sure he has lots of fun planned. I'll be watching from the sidelines, so call out if you need a paw!" And with that, Ripplepelt waded out of the water, shivering at the air on her cold pelt.

Frostpaw's eyes lit up in excitement as he did a small spin in the water successfully and went to shore again, ears twitching. "yay!" His happy meow came out.

Springpaw felt more comfortable standing in front of Cherryswirl than with Sootpelt. She wasn't sure something about the other warrior rubbed her fur the wrong way so she preferred not to mess with that kind of energy. "I want to do s-swimming first, heh" she sounded a bit nervous something she was trying to not let show. Yet she had no control of it since she hadn't touched a lick of water since the flooding, only to drink naturally but anything else, nope. The torbie glanced over to Tansypaw seeing if she was going to choose or go with whatever. Once in a while, she eyed the body of water that was ahead of them, screaming in her head to back out and not do this. She wouldn't thought, she never backed down from a fun event, not one that involved gaining some skills she desperately needed.
