Re: Battle of the Fishcats! (open to apprentices + warriors!)
Wow, ok. This was a tough crowd. Cherryswirl nodded for the apprentices to shuffle close, eyeing each one carefully.
"Alright, well... At the very least, I am going to teach you all water rescue, if nothing else. Floods, at our current location shouldn't be so much of a problem anymore, but if we somehow find ourselves in another flood situation, here's what you can do." They would have to do without an example this time. "If you can't swim, do not go in. As much as it may hurt to see your clanmate in danger, you increase the chance of both of you getting swept away and potentially drowning. Try to stay away from the more rapid or deep parts of the river, for safety and comfort. Seriously, if you can go with at least three clanmates to the river, then do it - that way if there's an issue, one of you can run back to get more help. Now..." Her eyes drifted to Tansypaw first, before moving to Springpaw, then Charredpaw, then Treepaw, and finally to Summerpaw. "In the case that you are helping a rescued clanmate or cat, the first thing you want to do is make sure they expel any water they may have swallowed. If they're unconscious, you can do this making sure their mouth is open, they're on their side, and then forcefully nudge and press your maw to their chest. You could also try and press on their stomach... but it may not help if the water is in the chest..." Cherryswirl paused for a moment to let it sink in, then continued,
"After making sure they've thrown up any water in their system, the next thing you want to do is groom any excess water off their pelt. Then snuggle up so they don't get too cold as you wait for help. If you don't have another clanmate getting help, pull them onto your back and carry them back to camp as fast as you can. This is very important in leaf-fall and leaf-bare when it gets much colder." The warrior blinked softly, her voice firm but informative. For a moment, she seemed lost in her own thoughts, though was able to pull herself back as she smiled warmly to the learning apprentices. "I think all our planning may have intervened with the time we have... so if you do want to learn any fighting or swimming tactics, you can come find me in camp. I can always give you a personal lesson." She side-eyed the feline who was supposed to help with a slight frown.
"Any questions before we wrap up the rescue training?"

Hawksun had padded back as it was taking long, what were they doing? "Dwadling around the ladies I see?" The large senior warrior teased his apprentice. Summerpaw glared at his mentor with a half-hearted snort of amusment. "Springpaw, this is Hawksun, Hawksun this is my sister, Springpaw." Summerpaw introduced swiftly, turning to listen to the she-cat, his eyes locked with the warriors for a moment as she swept her seemingly smart gaze over the dumb apprentices. "Hmm, whoever doesn't know how to flail there paws go back to camp!" Summerpaw growled, reciving a swipe along the ears and a stern glance from his mentor. "Yeah, question! Foxmoon told me about the water changing temperatures based on the seasons, how does the water change? Yeah I get winter is colder but how is fall warmer than spring?"

Troutpaw nodded as she listened and turned towards the water, she wriggled her tail before diving headfirst. She remained underwater for only a few moments before resurfacing, shaking off water drops. She smiled and giggled. “That was fun!” She climbed back out of the water and dove in again, quickly repeating the process with enthusiasm.

"Captain, you are a child of the universe. No less than a tree or a star, you deserve to be here. And whether or not it's clear to you, no doubt the universe is playing out as it should."
Lionpaw groaned, making no effort to hide his disinterest. Had they accidentally mistaken him for a kit again? Because that's what it sounded like when Ripplepelt explained what diving and splashing were to the group like they were complex topics. A skilled and experienced apprentice such as himself shouldn't have to engage in such low-effort nonsense.
Still, Lionpaw slinked back into the water, fur still damp from his earlier swim. As per Ripplepelt's suggestion he skipped straight to the diving practice, eager to get this over with. Lionpaw sucked in a breath and quickly dove beneath the surface. He pulled himself downwards and made as if to walk on the murky bottom like solid ground, using it as leverage to push himself faster through the water.
In actuality, his walk was more of a crawl as the water was so shallow that he had to tuck his head in just to keep it from peeking past the surface. More proof to him that he had joined a kit's lesson by mistake.
As he pulled himself along the bottom of the river Lionpaw imagined how he might look to an observer. He imagined himself shooting out of the water at his opponent like a fish, except way cooler. Then he came to realize that it might be difficult to sneak up on a warrior this way. His bright yellow pelt was like a sunny beacon up against the earthy tones of the river, and with this part of the river being so shallow it made it even more likely that an opponent would see him before he even had time to jump out.
Lionpaw broke past the surface with a huff. He turned to face his teammates wondering if they were as bored by this as him. Strangely they seemed fine with the lesson, so he he refocused his attention on those of the red team; his soon-to-be opponents. It seemed they were being taught a very different lesson than his team. From the looks of it they were learning how to rescue drowning clanmates... like any cat could actually drown in such shallow water.
Lionpaw had had enough of swimming lessons. He pulled himself ashore, faster and with less effort then previously, and strode up to Ripplepelt.
"Excuse me, but would it be possible for me to skip over all this swimming nonsense and get straight to the fighting? In case you didn't know, I already know how to swim," he mewed tiredly, as if talking to the warrior was also a waste of his precious time.

Because that's what it sounded like when Ripplepelt explained what diving and splashing were to the group like they were complex topics. A skilled and experienced apprentice such as himself shouldn't have to engage in such low-skilled nonsense. He was eight moons old after all, and four moons away from his assessment.

Ripplepelt narrowed her eyes at Lionpaw.
"Oh, my apologies, Lionstar," she mewed, voice dripping with sarcasm. "I hadn't realised I was training you and you alone. I'll do what you ask right away."
She flicked her tail in annoyance. Who did this apprentice think he was? "In case you hadn't noticed, Lionpaw, this is a team exercise. Your swimming ability is useless if you're the only one at the finish line. We'll get to the battle moves when every cat on the team is ready - not just you." She gave him a scathing look. "You could stand to have some respect - for your fellow apprentices, and for your elders."

Ripplepelt sighed as Bluefang was called away on urgent business. She supposed she'd have to take care of the battle training then. That was fine - the group was well behaved enough, and at this point, she'd probably be warmer in the water than out of it.
She waded back into the water. "Alright, I guess it's not quite goodbye after all," she mewed, her whiskers twitching in amusement. "Let's get into some battle training!"
Ripplepelt tilted her head in thought. Where to start? "Hm... why don't we go over some evasion and defense? Since it's a race, we don't want to get too caught up in the fighting - our goal is to reach the finish first. Let's start with a dive."
Ripplepelt dipped beneath the water, surfacing a moment later in a different spot. "Diving beneath the surface can be a quick way to lose your opponent without too much time being wasted." She shook the water off her whiskers. "Your opponent will waste time looking for you, and you'll be under the water where they can't attack.
"Duck under the water, blowing air out from your nose to avoid breathing it in. Remember to watch your head! The water isn't very deep. And make sure you know where you're going before you go beneath the water - you don't want to lose ground swimming in the wrong direction."
"Another way to get out of a battle is a quick splash of water to the face. We'll be avoiding attacking each other's heads for safety in the water, but a splash of water never hurt anyone - all it will do is distract them, creating an opportunity for that dive we just talked about. If they didn't see you duck beneath the surface, you've gotten yourself even more of an advantage."
Ripplepelt looked at the apprentices, making sure they were still paying attention. "Why don't you all give diving a try? I'm sure you don't need to practice splashing," she mewed, whiskers twitching in amusement.

A sharp breath, small but determined tail flick, Frecklepaw dove into the water. Well, he sputtered and chickened out a moment too late. Water rushed into his nose and sent him up with a coughing fit. After an embarrassing moment or two, he took another breath and willed himself to try again. A bit slower and more controlled this time, he dove into the water with much more success. Feeling quite proud of himself he waited for further instruction.
Ripplepelt watched on as the apprentices dove beneath the surface. Now they had learnt the basics, they could get onto the battle moves. She didn't want any hits to the head or face in a friendly battle, especially with so many cats still anxious around water from the flooding, but there were still a few moves she could teach.
"All right, now it's finally time for some offense. Both involve diving beneath the surface of the water." She looked at Lionpaw in particular, making sure the apprentice was paying attention.
"In the first move, you'll dive beneath the surface and lunge for their legs with one of your paws. If you succeed, they'll lose balance and fall. I don't want to see anyone getting on top of a fallen cat - just keep swimming while they're scrambling to get up."
"In the second, you'll jump up from under the water towards their chest, once again hoping to bowl them over."
Ripplepelt looked around the group. "Remember - don't get too caught up in the battling. The goal is to get to the other side of the stream before the other team - stopping them in their tracks and distracting them are our goals, so that you can speed ahead."
She tilted her head in thought, running over everything she'd covered. She was sure the apprentices were well prepared.
"Alright, good luck! And be safe."

Cherryswirl blinked for a moment, seemingly amused by this question - or rather that another cat seemed to believe that the water was warmer, than what she was assuming the apprentice meant as "leaf-fall."
"Well," She started slowly, "It's not warmer. I don't know who told you that, but new-leaf water is not... usually warmer, but the weather is. The sun feels nice and warm on the pelt, which makes the water dry faster if you do get wet. Our leaf-fall season is much colder than that. We usually have a lot of wind as well." Cherry tilted her head, "The only change you may see in the water, especially if it gets really really cold, is a sheet of ice over the top. Never walk on it, any of you. It's not stable and an easy way to drown." The warrior flicked her tail, letting a friendly look sweep the crowd,

Seemed it would all be common sense, even if it was new information to her. Eyes alight with curiosity, she watches Cherryswirl closely as she explains what to do. Hopefully she would never find herself in such a situation but she knew better than to hope for a thing that would never happen. As the medicine cat there was absolutely no way she wouldn't be dealing with drowning victims at some point in her profession. When they're asked if anyone has any other questions she wracks her brain for one. The more information she gathered all at once, the better.
When she can't come up with anything she just shakes her head in response, eagerly awaiting the next step in the training.
