"Ok." Bluetail got up and went to the back of the cave. "Lets try this," She said, lifting her paw. "a front paw blow. Pretend this pile of leaves is the head of an attacker." The she-cat powerfully brought her paw down hard on the pile. "Now you try." Bluetail meowed, walking over to Mudpaw.

Mudpaw nodded, focusing on the pile of leaves. Trying to imagine a fierce ShadowClan or RiverClan attacker, she swiped at them with all her might, claws unsheathed. The leaves scattered at her blow and she allowed herself a moment of confidence, which immediately faded when a leaf got stuck to her claws. She pulled it off with her teeth, spitting out the bitter scraps crossly.

"It may take some time to get it right, but you're doing good." Bluetail told her. "Just keep trying and you'll be better than any senior warrior." She encouraged. "Let's try this one more time and then we can move on." The she-cat pointed to one of the leaves from the pile with her tail. "Try small for now. When you feel like you have mastered that, go ahead and add more leaves."

She practiced the move a few more times until her forepaw ached, then added more leaves. This time, she knew that this move was more to stun an enemy rather than to do damage. She kept her claws sheathed and brought her paw down on the pile, scattering the leaves. She sat back on her haunches triumphantly, feeling as though she had thoroughly mastered the move. She looked to Bluetail, hazel eyes glimmering.

She knew that the apprentice must be tired from all the training, and every cat does need a break at some point. "If you want we could go hunt for prey." Bluetail suggested. "That always is a nice break, and doing so will help you practice your hunter's crouch." She said. It would be nice to see how well Mudpaw does with hunting for prey.

Mudpaw hopped up hastily, eager to hunt and show her mentor what she could do. "Yes!" She replied, scrambling over and waving her tail. Training had certainly worked up her appetite and she was eager to get some hunting training in before sunset. Hopefully she'd catch something that would make Bluetail proud!

After that, she bounded away into the ferns. Everything was still burnt, but most of the prey was back. "I better catch some prey by myself, then go watch Mudpaw catch something." Bluetail murmured.

Mudpaw flicked her tail to show that she had heard and stalked off under a hawthorn bush, ears pricked for prey. Her back brushed up against the slightly charred branches, making her jump. Hissing under her breath, she straightened out her spine and pressed herself closer to the ground.

Soon, she was on the scent trail of a shrew. Its earthy scent tickled her nose and sharpened her hunger, but she remembered Bluetail's instructions. Catch something for the Clan first, she told herself. Her paws moved slowly over the cold earth as she crept up on her prey. When she was a rabbit-length away, she jumped, claws outstretched.

She overcalculated the leap, however, and sailed over the shrew and into a clump of ferns. Biting back a frustrated yowl, she whipped around and lashed out her paw at the fleeing shrew. It shrieked when her claws caught in its fur but she bit down on its throat to silence it.
