Pinekit was terrified. What. The leader was a bit over the top in his opinion. Having the deputy tell them he was going to die was scary enough - he didn't need a demotion to dead - but now DAWNSTAR? What had the thing made him do?? It knew it wanted it as its den eventually... but it kept quiet, following Pondlilly. He was scared. Green creature was right behind him, he could feel it. He just wanted to scream and cry but he couldn't at all ever or everyone would call him weak weak weak and if he was weak then nobody would ever ever ever want him as an apprentice, no, they'd just make him an elder early because he was deaf, or something. A dark tail wrapped in vines trailed behind a dead looking body and it spoke at him again. To Pinekit it meowed, "She basically just said that you should be exiled because you tried to kill Mushroomkit, twice." smiling. It looked at Dawnstar, awaiting a response to twist. Pinekit didn't believe it, but he listened still. He needed to pay attention to Dawnstar. If he listened, green creature couldn't lie to him.
Pinekit couldn't be bothered to pay any attention to Mushroomkit anymore because green creature said so, and then when Dawnstar asked for his opinion on this or something like that, he should fight her because he needed to prove he was actually strong.

Foxpaw was realizing more and more that he wasn't as close to his family as the rest of his littermates. That never bothered him before. He kept to himself most of the time, and he didn't expect anyone to come chasing after him. But now, the more he thought about it, the more he saw his siblings bonding and enjoying themselves--even if it was only to get into trouble--the more agitated he became. The thought became like a tick embedding itself into his skin. He wasn't acting right. He had to fix this. He would start with Mother.
Foxpaw stood next to the den entrance, not yet ready to be seen. It was cold and dark; the sun had already fallen, sending a chill over the forest. It wasn't late, but the leaf-bare sun was always early to fall. Mother shouldn't be asleep yet. At least, Foxpaw hoped not.
Foxpaw padded in front of the entrance. "Mother." He paused, tilting his head to gaze into the den. His expression was as grave as ever, his amber eyes glowing dimly in the darkness. "May I come in?" He hesitated before adding in a mumble, "It's nothing important." If Mother had no time or interest in idle chitchat, Foxpaw might as well hear it right then and save them both the trouble.

[sorry for any mistake ugh i have one hell of a headache]
she padded into camp, dropping off her small tail-fur portion at her nest before padding up to her great-grandmothers den, pausing, and called out. "dawnstar? i have a gift for you before i go see sleepysunrise."
The massive feline blinks her amber eyes and gathers her paws underneath her at the call. She swishes her tail behind her lumbering towards the lichen and shoves it aside with a swat of her huge paws. Dawnstar shakes out her pelt and leans down into a stretch as she comes face to face with her great-granddaughter.
"Hazycry," She greets her gruffly and inspects her for injuries. "What do you have?"

Dawnstar pushes herself to her paws and pads to the entrance of her den, slipping outside on silent paws. She glares at Sootstorm yet her eyes lack heat or true menence.
"Of course, Icepaw would do well, I taught her how to keep herself hidden properly during stealth training despite her terrible coloring. I expect nothing less from her during ambush training. But feel free to report." It was difficult to tell if the leader was bragging or scolding. She wasn't growling so there was that.

She was nipping at scarred flesh when she heard the incoming paws. The leader was resting in her nest, ignoring the weird loneliness that lingered now that most of her kits had moved into the nursery. Cool sun-hued eyes glare at the lichen entrance until she hears the call. Oh, it was one of the parasites.
They all had different names for her, aside from their scents and the sounds of their voices, she could tell who was who based on what they called her. The more distant, maturish, ones often called her mother. The same thing she had called her.
"Come in," The response came as the leader yawned and finished giving her shoulder a few more licks, ridding herself of an annoying itch. She gave Foxpaw full attention once he entered, tail tip twitching behind her as she frowned at him.
"Whatever you say is always important to me if it's from you or your siblings." She tells him while beckoning him into her nest. "Now what is it?" Foxpaw has always been among the more distant of her litter. He never seemed to enjoy bonding or spending too much time with the rest of his siblings. She wouldn't say he disliked them, he was simply more independent then some of them. He reminded her a lot of Pantherpaw.
It's never concerned her nor did she see much need to force him to spend time with others when he didn't want to. No one liked being alone, even as independent as Dawnstar was, she loathed(feared) loneliness. She reasoned Foxpaw would come out of his shell and seek company in his own time. Dawnstar couldn't tell if she was correct, but as he was here now she could only assume he was here for company if he wasn't here for anything important as he said.

Sootstorm dipped her head respectfully to her leader and made her way inside of the den. Her eyes narrowed against the gloom. The last time she had been in here, she had watched Dawnstar tear out the throat of Sweetclaw.
"Well, then you'll be pleased to hear that she took Hawkpaw by surprise. Especially since Hawkpaw was being arrogant and teasing her," The gray-and-white warrior meowed warmly, clearly proud of Icepaw's outcome from the lesson. "Hawkpaw didn't see---or scent or hear---Icepaw coming, too busy rambling on about how she thought Icepaw couldn't learn how to ambush properly due to her white pelt."

A low hum was heard as the leader took in Sootstorm's report. "Hawkpaw's arrogance will get her into some real trouble. Even the strongest warriors know better than to underestimate their enemies." Dawnstar grumbled in reply. Dawnstar would admit that she had her cocky moments as an apprentice, but she had learned her lesson very quickly being arrogant.
"Let's hope she's learned something from her failings. It's good to hear that Icepaw is doing better with stealth. I may need to test if Icepaw is as good as you're praising her to be if she just did well because her target had a big mouth." It might be fun to do later.
"Anything else?"

''I did test their balance without lettin' 'em use their tails. I wanted to see just how well they could sink into their pads, because they never know if they'll lose their tails, y'know?'' Sootstorm shook out her pelt. ''Both of them did well, despite me having to get onto Hawkpaw multiple times for her teasing. But that's all. I just wanted to brag to ya about Icepaw. Thank you for your time, Dawnstar.'' She dipped her head before slipping out of the den.

Mother welcomed Foxpaw in. Really, he expected that. Dawnstar the leader had a sharp tongue and a short temper, but Dawnstar the mother tended to make more allowances. Foxpaw stifled the flicker of disappointment that stirred in his stomach and pushed into the den to settle beside Mother, craning his neck to meet her gaze.
Looking up at Mother like this made him feel like a kit. Foxpaw had grown quite a bit over time, but Mother still dwarfed him easily and probably would for life. Maybe his longer-than-average tail made up for it to some extent, but that probably made him look more strange and lanky than anything else--not adult or intimidating, like Mother. He narrowed his eyes. He didn't like it.
Foxpaw had been silent for several heartbeats, and it was at this moment that he realized that he hadn't actually planned anything to say, and would probably be gaping awkwardly like a toad very soon if he didn't pull himself together. One didn't simply walk up to someone and ask to talk for no reason. Surely Mother expected him to have something more specific on his mind.
Right, a story about Mother's past. Foxpaw could ask about Mother's past. Maybe it would seem like the apprentice had come, lost and without direction, and needed a piece of Mother's life to guide him through. It was fairly feasible. It was easier than the truth, anyway. In any case, he had already thought this over more than he cared to, though unfortunately he would still have to think and use tact to avoid accidentally stirring any painful memories. That would be wrong, and he didn't exactly have the capacity to deal with those sorts of difficult emotions.
Well, here goes nothing. Foxpaw would ask a simple but open-ended question, get Mother talking for a bit, and bonding achieved. It was so easy. Why had he ever doubted that? How strange.
"What sort of cat do you want me to become?"
What? That wasn't what Foxpaw had asked at all--what he meant to ask, that is. He had spoken slowly and deliberately, as if he really had asked something silly like, When did you know you wanted to become leader? or whatever else was flying through that fluffy head of his. And he had asked a very strange question out of nowhere, and there was nothing he could do about it.
His eyes had flashed for a moment with surprise at his own words, but now he smoothed that expression over with a more usual, serious one. If he couldn't fix that faux pas, he had to at least act like it was on purpose. Trying to walk a question like that back would only make things worse and exhaust him unnecessarily. He simply awaited Mother's response. If nothing else, she would have to have an interesting answer to such a question. Maybe Foxpaw wanted to hear it.
[this post takes place after mistlewhisker's talk with pinekit! o7]
Pondlily approached Dawnstar's den, her tail tip twitching to-and-fro. She glanced back to look at the kits. ''Be respectful,'' she mewed to Mushroomkit and Pinekit before slipping in the den, making sure that they followed.
''Dawnstar,'' the warrior mewed in greeting, dipping her head to the ShadowClan Leader in respect. ''I apologize for bothering you, but we have an issue. I was hosting a feather race for the kits. I thought it would be good for them. But, Mushroomkit has an imaginary friend---she calls her Dovekit, I believe---and Pinekit told me that she's crazy, and then he went to attack her.''
''I took the wounds he would have given her myself---which are just scratches, but still---and then Mistlewhisker grabbed him and pulled him aside. However, I still thought it was best to bring them to you, see what you would like to do,'' Pondlily sat back, wrapping her tail around Mushroomkit. ''As far as I know of, I believe that Pinekit has attacked Mushroomkit before. Tinywolf approached and asked Mushroomkit if Pinekit had hurt her again.''

Pinekit couldn't be bothered to pay any attention to Mushroomkit anymore because green creature said so, and then when Dawnstar asked for his opinion on this or something like that, he should fight her because he needed to prove he was actually strong.
Mushroomkit hadn't meant for anything to end up like this, she didn't even realize things could end up like this. If she had any clue of what was going to happen then Mushroomkit would've ran away from Pinekit the first time he approached her with his fake kindness and playfulness. It was only a trick to hurt Mushroomkit and make Dovekit upset. The dark russet kitten walked in after Pondlily, feeling kind of bad about ruining her event so much. Really all Mushroomkit wanted was to play a game and then Pinekit had to ruin things again.
Pondlily had started to explain things to Dawnstar- who, by the way, wasn't as scary as she has heard of- and flinched as the warrior called her sister 'imaginary.' "She isn't... she's real, Dovekit is real." Mushroomkit muttered under her breath but otherwise let the notion go as Pondlily explained that Pinekit had aimed to attack her and how Pinekit may have hurt her earlier- which he did. Was she supposed to speak now? She wanted her mom, or Tinywolf, she didn't want to be here. She didn't even really want Pinekit to get in trouble, she just wants him to live with her and Dovekit alone permanently and for him to stop hurting people.
Pinekit wasn't saying anything. He seemed scared. Mushroomkit was almost happy that he was scared, because then he would understand how she felt when he cut her with his claws and then followed her into an event just to try attacking her again. "We were just playing. He said he wanted to practice wrestling and I said okay because I thought it was like play fighting, but then he hurt me with his claws. I had a scratch and I went to the medicine den." She explained, looking down at her paws before lifting on up to press against where the mostly healed and nearly impossible to see past her fur scratch was.
"He lied to Tinywolf when she approached us because I started crying, and said that I attacked him first and he shoved me into thorns in defense but we were in the nursery! There's no thorns, and I wouldn't hurt anyone but other clans! I just wanted to ignore it and play Pondlily's game but then Pinekit followed me and then attacked me after being mean to Dovekit."
Sleepysunrise
[ 14 moons | She / Her | Shc Medicine Cat | Shadow Fiend ]
Was that why the dead kept haunting her mind? Were they aware of her fate even before it was brought about? If she had been in any better state Sleepysunrise would have been caught pouting that she was losing sleep over a mere rank, the dead have been visiting for moons. But only now have few been truly useful, teaching her of herbs and poisons when all others could only give empty promises. But that was a thought for another time.
A part of her wanted to accuse Dawnstar. Her eyes were lifted, locked on the leader, regarding her with an indescribable emotion. She wanted to snarl at the older cat, question why she withheld the information of her mother’s livelihood. Whether she had known she was dead before didn’t matter, what mattered is that her own grandmother couldn’t be trusted to share details about the feline that abandoned them all. And why? Because she was not good enough? She was angry. The only balm was her grandmother’s own disdain. She swallowed down her anger, keeping it carefully concealed behind a mask.
Dead. She is dead. Her grandmother claimed the bold statement. Not herself, overtaken or lost, or whatever. He said the same. She blinked, memory flashing in her mind. Any care for her children was gone. At the end of the day, whatever form her mother now had, she was dead, gone, buried or drowned. Her grandmother’s explanation felt like mere excuses, claims of weakness at best. Weak; it repeated in her mind; She thinks I am weak; Sleepysunrise took a steadying breath. She couldn’t let her think that. She couldn’t have her grandmother think she is weak. She couldn’t lose her grandmother too.
Whatever anger she felt was over-reigned by the innate fear of being abandoned again. Of being left behind just like mama had done, forgotten to only being a fleeting memory of failing woes. She had lost her mama the day she took the name Lostspark, the thought whirled around in her mind. That was the threshold, that was the day her demise started. Whatever she was now she was fully gone and Sleepysunrise in all those moons couldn’t save her, couldn’t be enough. What sick irony that it took her claiming that very same rank to realise this.
“Very well.”
She stated, her tone was dry and quiet, a trait she picked up in kithood. She never did like straining her voice. “I will leave you to rest.”
The words trickled from her mouth, this time more gentle. She lingered for a moment longer, almost hesitantly so, almost afraid to look. Afraid that if she did lift her gaze again, Miss Grandmama’s face would be gone, a scarred slate and nothing else. But she could feel the leader’s burning glare, how golden bright eyes like that of her mother’s stared at her. She hated that similarity. Leaning forth, Sleepysunrise allowed herself to press her head against her grandmother’s chest for a second too long. A silent form of affection. A silent testimony that the only true remaining mother in her life was the leader before her. Mama was gone, a mere husk of her former self. Those were the leader’s words. Those had to be the truth.
