Ok, so... there are two options here:

1. Your cat is already sick with something not linked with depression, but that something prevents it from keeping a normal life and this leads to depression.

If an active cat starts to develop arthritis and can no longer jump up to their comfy spot on the couch, bed, or window, it can be depressing and lead to a loss of enrichment. As a result, your cat can become depressed.

In situations when a cat experiences a sudden loss of a limb or an eye, or they start losing their sight, that would totally affect how they navigate in the world. Some cats may adjust really well, but an older cat may take longer to adjust and may become depressed.

2. Your cat has received damage to the lymbic system, let's say, with something mortal such as a cancer or something less extreme such as inflammation.

Damage to the limbic system often leads to disorders. As a rule, they occur in the emotional and motivational spheres. Thus, frequent symptoms are the appearance of constant feelings of:

fear;
tension;
longing;
anger;
depression;

What symptoms should they have?

Or any connection between cancer and rotten food? (eg.: Their immunity sistem weakened and they're vulnerable)
