Fishspeckle lifted his nose to the air momentarily to check for scents,
“You seem pretty able, I’m sure you’ll be a great warrior.”

Featherpaw watched as Fishspeckle lifted his nose to check the air for anything in the area around them. Being the young cat she was, she quickly copied him. Featherpaw lifted her nose in the air and took a whiff in. The scent of the forest filled her nostrils, yet something caught her attention.

She smiled as the tom complimented her progress,"I really appreciate it Fishspeckles!" She then lifted her nose in the air for a second time, a curious scent catching her attention once more. The she-cat turned to her company, cocking her head at him,"Do you smell that?"

Hooray! Now that they were actually getting going, Baypaw's excitement levels were shooting even higher. And now they knew the name of at least one of the two strangers on this patrol, Eelpaw. But the silly old warrior didn't give any name at all. The explanation of the whole mentor medicine cat thing was a little confusing. But in the end, it seemed to them that she was just trying to show off her herb knowledge skills or whatever. "Okay, but what's your name?" They couldn't help but ask. Thye knew Snakepaw had said to move along, but curiosity got the better of them. Besides, she could always just state her name while they were walking to go find herbs and it probably wouldn't waste that much time, right? Easy peasy!

Anyways, it was time to refocus their attention onto herbs. Listening carefully to their brother's descriptions, the tabby tried to picture what each of the needed herbs looked like. Given their wild imagination, the plants they pictured were way off from the actual ones, but it was still close enough that they'd be able to pick out the real ones if they saw any. "Awesome! Let's do this!" They were a bit startled by Snakepaw's playful nudge, but a smile soon broke across their face, and they returned the nudge. That aside, it was time to look out for herbs! This seemed fun, almost like a game! Kind of like hide and seek, except the hiders were... well, plants.

Frolicking a short distance away from the group, they began searching around for the plants Snakepaw described. It wasn't long before something red caught their eye. Was this that poppy flower thingy? Moving closer, they saw it had a black center with a bunch of little seeds inside. Yes! This was it! "I found a poppy flower!" Grabbing the stem with their jaw, they tugged until the whole flower came loose from the rest of the plant. Proud of having found the first herb, they headed back over to the group, flower in jaws.

Again, he lifted his nose to the air and his eyes widened now,
“I... don’t know what that thing is!” Fishspeckle cocked his head.
(By the way, for a new member you’re quite the role player, kudos to you!)

Featherpaw - @Willowfern

Featherpaw become very anxious at the smell in the air and looked to Fishspeckle for comfort. Laying her ears down she quietly said,"Could it be a threat?" The young apprentice had never found herself thrown off by a simple scent before, but something seemed different about this one. Featherpaw began to worry what if it's a dog, or a two leg, or even worse.. a sharptooth? Her thoughts began to flood her brain and she become quite overwhelmed with them.

The young she-cat once again looked up to Fishspeckle,"Should we follow it?"

“Maybe... wait here, I’m going to check it out,” Fishspeckle meowed as he scrambled up a small tree, peering through some branches, he squinted and couldn’t believe what he saw, jumping down, he meowed,
“It’s a thin, spindly creature with white spots all over it, and giant eyes...”
He cocked his head,
“I think it’s something called a deer?”
(Baby deer, since adults can kill two cats easily)

Featherpaw was astonished by the bravery Fishspeckle had, that he was so willing to face danger by himself. The young she-cat sat quietly as she watched the tom walked directly in the direction of what could have been something bad. Anxiously, she waited for him to tell her it was all going to be fine.

However, the tom had seemed to spot something different. Featherpaw could not contain herself to sit any longer and padded over to the tom. She nuzzled beside him and cocked her head at the figure too. "A deer you say?" She sat puzzled by the spots along its back and its long, skinny legs. "What clan do they belong to?"

He smiled at the she-cat, a chuckle in his throat,
“Deer don’t belong the clans, they belong to something called a herd. This one has spots on it, so if I’m correct, this is just a kit,” Fishspeckle stared at it for a moment more, “Even though it’s only a kit, it could still be dangerous, so we should just watch from a distance.”

Featherpaw was happy to be learning more about the world around her and laughed as Fishspeckle informed her where deer were from. The young she-cat eyed the speckle friend from a distance. It was eating the grass around it and seemed to be perfectly content.

She looked over to Fishspeckle,"So, where are its parents then?"

“Well, the fathers are never around, as far as I know, but the mothers sometimes go off a little ways away to eat on their own, but they still watch their kits very closely,” Fishspeckle meowed, watching the kit eat, “I think we best walk away now, because if the mother sees us, it might think us a threat to it and its kit.”
