Taru is a large island continent full of magical people. Each person can control a single element. The people that walk these lands are Windwalkers, Flamriders, Waterbringers, Leafreaders, and Nightstriders. Legend tells of a 6th tribe- the Realmbenders. Said to have lived long long ago, most believe them to have created the world. No evidence exists to prove this theory, but many elders tell of a war that raged for years, between the Realmbenders and the rest of the people. All of Earth’s physical features and animal species can be found upon Taru along with weather, etc. Unlike Earth though, Taru has four moons. Mahina, Loona, Hli, and Lua.
Windwalkers have pure white hair, and rarely, some have feathered angel-like wings. They control wind and weather! They live in the Sky Forest, where it’s easy for them to harness the howling winds. Windwalker’s houses tend to be scattered around the Sky Forest, but there is one large settlement of over 300 homes, which is known as Lani Village. It can be found in a large clearing. Windwalkers tend to be neat and tidy, but they’re also by far the most intelligent of the people that live on Taru. Windwalkers are responsible for over half of the inventions that the people of Taru use daily. They also created specialized flying machines that only WIndwalkers can use. Many of them own staffs that can transform into gliders at their specific touch. The leader of the Windwalkers is Velox, a woman with white and grey speckled wings. She’s a stubborn and strict leader. Who enforces laws with a police system (as most leaders do these days). She isn’t exactly loved, but she is feared. The Windwalkers believe in a goddess called Fujin. She is said to be a spirit made entirely of wind, who gave the WIndwalkers the gift of flight. The wind is said to be her breath of life upon the people, and clouds are spirits called “Kaze.”
Waterbringers have any shade of blue hair, and control water and all things related to it. They live beside and in The Sacred Lake. If they get fully submerged in water, they will become “Sea-Monsters.” They will grow scales any color from blue to green, their eyes adapt to see in the dark, they get gills, webbed feet & hands, a tail, and fin-like things where their ears should be. There's a large neon-y Tokyo-like Waterbringer city at the bottom of the lake known as Mizu City. The small town on the beach of the lake is called Bay Town. Waterbringers are known to be clever tricksters, but also have kind and loyal hearts. Their leader is Kai, a man who often rejects his responsibilities, but once the Waterbringers are messed with, he goes all out. Kai loves kids, and tends to goof around more than he leads his nation. He’s generally well-liked. The Waterbringers believe in ten water spirits, all led by the Water Godess, Mizu. The spirits are Kaiyo, spirit of the ocean, Kawa, spirit of the river, Ame, spirit of the rain, Tsuki, spirit of the moon, Sakana, spirit of the fish, Jinsei, spirit of bounty, Shi, spirit of death, Hapi, spirit of life, Taiyo, spirit of the sun, and Johatzu, spirit of reincarnation. The Waterbringers are the only people to believe in multiple deities.
Flameriders have red or orange hair, and control fire, heat, and lightning. They live in The Ash Fields. They have the ability to turn into a brand of fire, or allow fire to consume them without it causing pain. There is a large settlement in the Ash Fields called Ahi Town. Flameriders are usually aggressive and powerful, but, most aren’t the brightest. Their leader is Blaze, a burly man who’s as dumb as a rock. He will gladly fight anything, and when it comes to the Flameriders, he’d stop a bullet for every single one of them. Most Flameriders are waiting out the days until his son (who is far smarter), Cyrus, takes over. Even though leaders are elected, a leader’s son will most likely run after their father’s death. They worship the Fire Goddess Yogan, who is said to have brought fire to Taru, and blessed the Flameriders with it’s power.
Leafreaders have green hair, and control plants. They live in The Fortune Valley. They have the ability to shapeshift into a leaf, and can allow poisonous plants on them without harm. The fortune valley has houses scattered across it, but there's one big settlement they called, Vine Haven. Floating islands with gardens are often found too, and some of these flowers and plants have magical properties. For example, the Inaku Natta petal (invisibility), the Chikara root (strength), and the Heilung vine (healing). Leafreaders are usually easy to startle, and live quiet, safe lives. But, if you hurt on of their friends, the best thing to do is run. Their leader is Liko, a non-binary gardener. They are loved by their people for their perseverance and determination to do what’s right. They have a daughter named Lesley. The Leafreaders believe in the Goddess of Trees, Shokubutsu. Flowers are said to grow only where she’s touched.
Nightstriders have black or dark grey hair, and control darkness, shadows, or anything related to it. They live in The Hidden Mountains. They have the ability to melt into darkness, and see in pitch black. Their houses tend to be scattered along the mountain range, but a town can be found by the name of Dark Rise. Little is known about Nightstriders, as they are the most secretive of the people who call Taru home. They are experts at sneaking around and hiding. Their leader is Kurai, a man just as mysterious as the rest of his people. He used to be an assassin before becoming the leader of the Nightstriders, after the former leader mysteriously disappeared. For obvious reasons, some of his people still don’t entirely trust him. The Nightstriders are atheists.
Hybrids are born when two people of different elements have a child. Often but not always, Hybrids have multicolored hair and a mix of the elements their parents have. They are rarely accepted by society, and if living with a single elemental city, they do their best to hide their heritage. The Hybrids have no leaders, but their civilization is still quite neat and orderly.
Eagales are known for their cleverness and cunning. A body made of air and a wide wing-span allows them to fly long distances without getting tired. Famous Windwalker zoologist Zepher Vayu, has discovered that Eagales can fly at speeds of up to 60mph, 70 when hunting. Zepher Vayu also found that Eagales are hostile if an unknown creature is found in their territory. These incredible birds have vicious attacks, and they seem to learn quickly their opponents strengths and weaknesses. A translucent body allows them to camouflage in trees, the sky, etc. to make a sneak attack on their prey. Baby Eagales have a cloud-like appearance, and loose their fluff at 4 months old. This is also when they are taught to fly, and soon after, leave the nest. Males have yellow eyes, while females have blue ones. Eagales otherwise have similar attributes to eagles, such as what they eat and their natural predators.
Bubblenose Dolphins are similar in many ways to bottlenose dolphins. Other than the fact that these rare species are made of pure bubbles. This allows them to cause distractions, break apart and come together again, move quickly through the water (as Windwalker Zephyr Veyu discovered while studying them), and, one of their more famous attributes, blow humongous bubbles that Waterbringers often use to decorate festivals and other events. Bubblenose Dolphins are among the most playful creatures ever! They enjoy simple games as well as complex ones, such as hide-&-seek, tag, and hot potato (with bubbles, of course). While Eagales are smart, Bubblenoses are even smarter, even if this trait is little shown/known. Baby Bubblenoses have, just that, a large bubble on the tip of their nose. As they grow, their skin falls off, revealing the body of bubbles beneath. Because they are made of highly-fragile material, these kinds of dolphins have a unique ability to shoot ice from their mouths, despite the temperature of the water around them.
Not search engines. Firefoxes are highly dangerous, and may possibly be the reason that the Ash Fields are forever coated in soot and ash. Firefoxes are hostile to everything, even their own kind. These creatures are very territorial and do not tolerate intruders. Flameriders are the only people who can successfully study these creatures because of their flame-proof skin. Firefoxes were known for years as merciless beasts with no emotion, until a Flamerider scientist, Flaire Zemora, stumbled across a nest of Firefox kits. Young Firefoxes are made of hot lava rock, with fire churning beneath. Flaire revealed that while watching the nest, she witnessed loving parents, and beautiful relationships. Firefoxes have since been a symbol of love and affection among the Flameriders, and are often seen as a good omen, meaning that you will soon find your true love.
Springdeer are made entirely of wood, and have vines of various wildflowers climbing up their antlers. Females have poison ivy running up their legs. Springdeer are docile creatures, and rarely ever attack. They live in herds, and the male with the most flowers on their antlers become the leader, otherwise known as the Sunflower. The Sunflower takes care of the young, makes sure the herd is fed by sending females out to find food, and often the Sunflower also finds a safe place for the herd to live. Springdeer females do not mate for life, and usually they have a few affairs in their lifetime to produce more offspring. Babies never meet their mothers or father, and the closest thing they have to a parent is the Sunflower. Springdeer are herbivores, the only elemental animals to eat strictly plants. They have an amazing sense of smell, and can track things for miles.
Cats made of shadow. Nothing else is known about them, other that they are rarely seen.
The Sky Forest is a large wooded area with masses of floating land (often holding trees, waterfalls, homes, etc) sprinkled throughout it. It is home to the Windwalkers and other creatures. Rivers, creeks, and waterfalls are found here. The climate is normal temperatures, and the weather is brought by the Windwalkers that call it home. Sometimes in spring, magical blossoms called the Pink Hana will bloom, and spread poisonous spores throughout the forest. When this happens, no Windwalkers are allowed outside the village. Specialized gas-masks are owned by all Windwalkers just in case the Pink Hana blooms without warning. The Sacred Cloud is a huge fluffy cloud that has hung over the city for centuries.
The Sacred Lake is a huge lake of a light almost see-through blue color. It sparkles in the sunlight. It is home to the underwater dwellings of most Waterbringers who prefer to live in their natural element, but some decide to live on the banks. Fish and other freshwater creatures are found here. The Sacred Lake is much larger than most lakes, spanning further than the eye can see. On the bank of the lake, houses are built in the sand, making homes for the poorer bunch of Waterbringers. Fishing is an important part of the Waterbringers’ culture, and is one of the largest industries on Taru. The climate here is usually warm, but sometimes in winter, the lake freezes over. In these times, it is recommended that Waterbringers stay on land.
The Ash Fields is a big expanse of grass that is covered in ashes. Some say this land is an ancient battlefield. This is home to the Flameriders and other wildlife that make grasslands their home. The original color of the grass is unknown, and the ash is impossible to remove. Trees are scattered throughout The Ash Feilds, along with Flamerider houses. The climate here is unnaturally warm, and even in winter, the temperature doesn’t go under 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Fortune Valley is a large valley settled between the Hidden Mountains that the Leafreaders call home. It has lots of plant-life and wildlife because of the thriving ecosystems that Leafspeakers create. Some plants have magical properties, and can cause different effects if brewed correctly. Some but not limited to are the Mienai Flower (invisibility), The Nauso Leaf (healing), and the Ikaika Vine (strength). Gardens on floating islands can be found scattered across the sky, and Leafreader houses are found just as spread out. Most if not all of the produce on Taru are provided by the Leafreaders.
The Hidden Mountains are a mountain range of rocky mountains with small forests dotted across them. The tips of these mountains are obscured in huge storm clouds, giving the range its name. The Nightstriders call these mountains home, usually settling at the tips of the mountain past the storm clouds. It seems unnaturally cold on these mountains, and some tribes believe the mountains to hold secrets that only the Nightstriders know.
The Battle Grounds are a distorted and dreary land. Some people say it was the old home of the mythical Realmbenders. It is an expanse of broken land littered in bones and destroyed buildings. Areas of floating land can be found, but even atop those, the grass is black. Not many people come here, so it is a good place to be alone. Many believe The Battle Grounds are haunted.
The Unclaimed Territories, or more widely know as The Middle Lands, are stretches of grass, floating islands, trees, hills, etc between the homelands of the five species.
Hybrid Haven is a relatively new city, built by Hybrids that cast away from their homes. It’s a small city, but it’s perfect for the rarity of the Hybrids. Things of all elements can be found here, such as a pond, a tiny volcano, multiple gardens, and a wide area above the city for Wind-powered people. Hybrid Haven is also a secret city, and is only rumored to be real by Purebloods.
Realmbenders were all-knowing beings that could control anything and everything. Tapestries and ancient arts depict them to have bright purple hair and purple eyes. Many legends are written about them, but the most known one is the story of how they created the world. It is also said that they created all of the species that live on Taru. They lived in harmony for a long time, but then, the people rebelled. They believed that the Realmbenders had too much power, and sought to rule the world. The Great War began, and many were killed. The Realmbenders are extinct now, and their cultures, traditions, and religions are mysteries. Some stories depict them as great heroes, and some, great enemies.
Long ago, Taru was a drab, empty, lifeless world. Nothing but dust laid upon its horizons. Until, one day came the Realmbenders. They created our lands, our seas, and our mountains. Soon, the first of all the species were entered into Taru. They all got along until one day... the five species rebelled against the Realmbenders. They believed that they had too much power over Taru. A huge and bloody war broke out, and the Realmbenders went extinct. All of Kalpana rejoiced the victory while mourning their losses.
Festival of Light - Waterbringer celebration - All work on this day is closed. Waterbringers gather in the city square to celebrate life. They wear hand-made kelp masks of the Water Spirits and play/dance to traditional Waterbringer music. After the event, families have a large meal that starts with a prayer to the Water Spirits, thanking them for the light they had given them.
The Sky Dance - Windwalker celebration - Prom but fancier. All Windwalkers gather on the Sacred Cloud, and slow dance with dates & lovers. This is one of the only time Windwalkers wear fancy clothes (silk + feathered dresses, suits, etc) except for important meetings with other civilizations.
Seven Days of Silence - Nightstrider tradition - The first week of January, nobody can speak. Nobody. Not a sound. Laughing and other such noises are fine, but speaking during the Seven Days Of Silence is punishable by death.
Study of The Roots - Leafspeaker tradition - All work on this day is closed. Leafspeakers gather by the Wish Tree in the middle of their village, and have a day of fun. Picnics, games, and socialization. Long ago, this day was used by scientists to study the Wish Tree, as evident by the name of this traditional event, “Study Of The Roots.” This event goes on from 7:00am to 10:00pm. Attendance is NOT mandatory.
Heart’s Fire - Flamerider tradition - A competition held at noon. Sign-ups are held a week before the event. Volunteers have to complete a sort of gauntlet, composed of obstacle courses, hunting competitions, races, etc. All events are chosen at random. The winner recieves a trophy, and interview for the Ahi Town news, and self-proclaimed bragging rights (but seriously, every winner says that. It’s not a real prize.)
Day of Freedom - Shared celebration - A time where all the people of different elements come together in the center of the island to celebrate the victory of freedom. This event has been happening ever since the War of Freedom (fighting Realmbenders) and is always held right by the Prophecy Crystal. It is a time for old friends to catch up with each other, children to play, and festivities to be enjoyed. This celebration generally happens around New-Years Eve or New-Years day.
Burning Vine walked through the streets of Hybrid Haven, breathing in the sweet air. It's a nice day. She thought, brushing her green-red hair out of her face.

Nixie (Nix) Mallow

Nixie sat on the dock of The Sacred Lake, staring down into the crystal-clear water. Her shoulder-length hair was messy and ruffled by the wind, and her flip-flops hung from her feet that dangled over the edge of the wooden platform. The young Waterbringer was watching for her friend, Bubbles. Bubbles was a Bubblenose Dolphin, which Nixie had met when she was only 3 years old. The baby dolphin had found her sitting alone at the bottom of the lake, and played with Nixie until her parents came looking for her. Nixie smiled at the memory, swaying back and forth with the wind. Then, a small bubble rose through the water, popping at the surface. That meant Bubbles was down there, waiting for her. Nixie fell forward, her scales appearing instantly along her body. She swished her strong tail, swimming downward to find her dolphin friend.

Not long after diving in, Nix spotted another Waterbringer sitting on the beach of the lake. Nixie cast a look downward, wondering if Bubbles would be ok with another person coming to see him. She decided it would be fine. After all, the other girl might not want to come down with her. Nixie began swimming upward, webbed limbs giving her extreme speed. "BOO!" She yelled, leaping out of the water, into the air, and landing with a splash back in the water in front of the other Waterbringer. Only Nixie's eyes and above were visible, and she was still in her sea-monstery form. "Hi!" Nix said, a giggle in her voice, pulling the rest of her head out of the water. Now only the parts of her that were underwater were scaled.

The person raised their head from the roots they sheld in their hands, looking over to the springdeer. She smiled, bowing her head gently. They had heard some things about the springdeer, but not enough to just.. Approach it. She stayed still, looking back down at the ground, before placing a seed from their sachel into the ground.

The wind blew her hair into her face, leaves were scattered in it, pain had engulfed her body awhile ago, to the point where it was now a numb thought, that was the peril of escaping death, Lorien flew overhead, scouting where Mara's eyes could not. This long and tiresome journey had taken a lot out of her, and it didn't help that a bad cut marred her side, painfully getting in the way when she walked,
"I must find the haven" she said through gritted teeth. Lorien landed beside her, her speckled wings folded back and she tilted her head to spy a glimpse at the wound.
"Lorien, go find me some Endorphin (real plant used as natural painkiller), roots leaves or anything" the screech Lorien gave as she took off told Mara her companion would return, but with the desperation of the situation it was hard for her to concentrate on finding The Haven.
