Rookpaw took position and swiped at Wolfwhisper's front knee, trying to unbalance him.

Once again, Wolfwhisper did not make any move to dodge or defend himself against it. Not yet at least. He wanted to make sure she got the chance to try the move out properly. So like he said, he lost balance and flopped to the floor.
He grinned, "Good job!" Wolfwhisper meowed, trying to keep up the euthanistic tone. It really did seem like he kept getting injuries after injuries at this point.
Rising back to his paws, he turned back to Rookpaw. "Alright, we're going to spar now. I want to see where you excel at and where you need working on, sounds good? Remember, claws sheathed! Don't hold back however, " He smiled, there was still a sense of nervousness running throughout his body. Gosh, Wolfwhisper hoped he was doing a decent job.
He lowered himself to the ground slightly - entering into a much more defensive stance. "When you're ready, " Wolfwhisper nodded, bracing himself.

Rookpaw was happy to see that her move had been executed properly. She still worried about her physical strength. And she was more of a strategist than anything else do she assumed the spar would not be in her favor. In the few instances where she got to play with her siblings and they didn't shun her, or when she pretend-fought her mother before she disappeared, Rookpaw tended to throw herself into the fight like she had a death wish. Later this style translated into how she fought some kits or apprentices that would bully her. She held her own purely by force of anger. This wasn't always a good strategy, though.
Rookpaw really wanted to babble her insecurities out but she knew better. Fir once, she had to keep her mouth shut and focus on the task at hand, however hard it may be. So, as Wolfwhisper took his stance and waited fir her, she planted her paws firmly and lunged at him, attempting to leap and to the move he had shown her and land on his back.

The apprentice began to bristle up just as expected, which was completely normal for almost any cat facing this type of attack. However, the level of fear he could sense was over the top. That really wasn't going to put him in a good headspace when the actual attack came.
Once the attack had landed, the dark tabby waited for a few moments as Finchpaw sank beneath his weight. He felt the younger tom struggling below him, but made no attempt to budge. After letting Finchpaw twist and kick around a few moments longer, the deputy simply lifted himself up and allowed the apprentice to get up. They were done with this portion of training for now.
"We've got quite a bit of work to do with your reflexes and defense." It was clear that Finchpaw had paid more attention to attacks rather than dodges whilst watching the other apprentices train. "Your reflexes should develop with time and practice, however, we'll begin actual training today with defense. We'll wrap up with attacks since you already seem to have the basics down."
"The first defensive tactic is called the duck and roll. You'll find this beneficial for attacks similar to the last one I used on you. The name of the move says it all. Drop to the ground and roll a safe distance away. Try to do it in a fluid motion and time the roll so you land back on your feet immediately. Try it."
|
Finchpaw gasped in a big breath as his mentor lifted his weight off him. Scrambling to his paws he resisted giving his mentor a hateful look, did Finchwhisker really have to embarrass him like that?? Sitting on another cat was a kit move!
While his mentor seemed somewhat pleased with his efforts Finchpaw was annoyed. He didn’t want to show any flaws, he had hoped to impress the deputy and he had almost done it! The tom clicked his tongue, annoyed at his failed efforts.
As Finchwhisker explained the new training Finchpaw narrowed his eyes.
Defensive moves? that’s what he was lacking?? How pathetic.
With a small huff he nodded his understanding. He crouched and then twisted, dropping to his back and rolling to his left, away from Finchwhisker. He gave a small intake of air as he rolled over his side, his ribs still feeling bruised from their recent fight. Finishing his rollhe landed back on his paws, slightly wobbling to his right.
Mouse drug! That wasn’t perfect either!
Without waiting for his mentors instructions he tried again, dropping and rolling back towards Finchwhisker, his movements slightly more fluid. Finishing his roll he got to his paws and crouched more forward, his balance a bit better.
He raised his gaze back to his mentor, his look questioning, awaiting criticism

Unfortunately as much as Wolfwhisper was mildly against the idea of pretending to fight his apprentice he was much more worried about her dying. His eyes watched Rookpaw carefully. It was slightly predicable that she would use one of the moves he taught. He was so proud at least!
The tom rolled out of the way - letting the apprentice fall flat on the floor. Ow! Wolfwhisper at least didn't mutter a sorry.
He hopped to his paws and took the moment of Rookpaw's opening to raise a paw and attempt to bat at her side.

Rookpaw had partially expected him to roll out of the way. She landed on her paws, crouched. Now what. Rookpaw was a deep thinker and didn't work well in the moment. As Wolfwhisper went to bat at her she swiftly turned towards him with an outstretched paw, swiping to deflect his punch. She then used her other paw to aim at his face.

Wolfwhisper let out a surprised yelp as Rookpaw deflected his punch. There was a proud smile on his face. Of course he didn't have much time to really keep it up as Rookpaw aimed for his poor face. Not the face! Wolfwhisper ducked under, avoiding her devious paw. He took the chance to try and lash out one of her frontlegs and unbalance the tall apprentice.

(Big thanks for nominating Rook for cotm! )
Rookpaw was happy to see that she'd avoided a paw punch, but she wasn't fast enough. Her own paw missed. She did not gave time to dwell on thar, however. Wolfwhisper was trying to unbalance her. He hit, and she stumbled back, almost sitting down. She used this as an opportunity to pull back and add some distance between them and crouched defensively.

no problem :'D she's a wonderful character so i had to <3 //
Good move. Wolfwhisper would have taken the chance to swipe at her while she was down but now there was distance. Rather or not it was intentional it was still rather smart. He didn't take time to dwell, only lowering himself to the ground. Wolfwhisper's eyes scanned over Rookpaw, waiting and watching. Then he leapt, paws outstretched for Rookpaw's shoulders. He was aiming to pin her down.

Rookpaw didn't really feel like she could move sideways. She wouldn't be fast enough. Instead she decided to risk it. She stood up tal and reared, trying to meet Wolfwhisper head on and try yo deflect him or pin him down herself by slamming down her paws.

[ if anyone sees this i got permission dw dw >:"))) ]
Unfortunately for Rookpaw despite Wolfwhisper's short height he was rather muscular. He overpowered his apprentice, pushing her down to the ground. He placed a paw on her throat, not applying pressure. It was an imitation of something much worse. "You were good! Just gottaa keep in mind of your weaknesses. You're tall but uhm, " Wolfwhisper hesitated, tilting his head. "..Skinny, " A beanpole, actually.
