lilypaw walked into the nursery to visit the little kits, feels really good to be in the nursery but being apprentice and sleeping in the apprentice den wasn't all bad, she looked around

In the dark, warm, silent world that currently spread around the small calico kit nestled between her littermates, Lightningkit's soft, sleepy breathing gave the molly only the faintest of stirrings as dreams fluttered freely by. She knew not what she dreamt of - she would forget as soon as she woke up - but she could always remember the feeling of wind on her face. She desperately clung to that feeling until... it vanished. Replaced instead by a gentle, loving touch on her head. A touch that while she normally would be more than happy to receive, made her just a bit annoyed today. She wanted to remember so bad what it was she had been dreaming.

Unable to recall, the small kit settled for letting her displeasure known by giving a small, shrill mew of complaint. She turned around slowly, her tiny paws clumsily kneading the ground until she recognized the scents around her. In her short life, that was the one constant Lightningkit had, and she memorized them well. One was "favorite scent", a warm, loving scent that brought her a sense of calm and safety, as well as food whenever she was hungry. There was also "tiny smell", "cuddly smell", and "getoffme smell", the three scents that were always around her, usually cuddled up with her, with "getoffme smell" usually infuriating her as it got on top of her and refused to move. There was a fifth smell that was relatively common as well. That one was "visitor scent". She did like the scent, and had grown to enjoy its presence, but it mostly remained a mystery to her.

Today, however, as "favorite scent" woke her up, her mouth open in her tiny, complaining squeak, she could taste something different in the air. The objection in her voice slowly changed to that of confusion, quickly followed by curiosity as she turned her blind, deaf head towards the source, letting her nose guide her. Crawling awkwardly, little paws dragging her towards the source of the scent, she slowly made her way towards the edge of the nest, questioning, mewling chirps escaping her at this new yet oddly familiar scent. It was rather similar to "favorite scent" if she was to be honest. It lacked the delicious milk scent that was so synonym to "favorite scent", but there was still a very similar loving warmth to it that made her raise her miniscule nose and purr, letting the scent know that she liked it and wanted it to stay. As long as it didn't join "getoffme smell" in annoying her, that is...

Squirrelear heard a strange mewling sound and looked down, and his blue eyes widened when he noticed one of his nieces stirring. Lightningkit, as Gingerheart pointed out. The little kitten had been sleeping while he and his sister were speaking, but it seemed that she was now awake. Oh, were they too loud? Was their speaking what woke her up? Or was it Gingerheart nosing her? Well, whatever it was, Lightningkit definitely didn't seem happy to be woken up, is the mew of protest and her wriggling was anything to go by. But look at her! She was so small, and fluffy, and cute! Awwwwww....

However, Squirrelear found himself frozen when Lightningkit's nose seemed to notice his scent, if her sniffing and turning her head to him was of any indication. The dark ginger tabby remained rooted to his spot, eyes wide as he watched his niece near the edge of her family nest, letting out a sound akin to a purr as she crawled in his direction.

What was he supposed to do now?! Was he supposed to stay still, or bring Lightningkit back to Gingerheart? But he didn't want to accidentally hurt the kit... Then again, she could end up hurt when trying to crawl out of the nest.... Oh, what was he supposed to do?! Squirrelear looked up and locked gazes with his sister, his eyes pleading for help, muscles tense as he remained frozen, unsure of what to do.

Gingerheart purred, watching her daughter mew and move around. She watched her crawling towards Squirrelear, before gently picking up the little calico by the scruff and placing her back in the nest. She saw her brothers pleading look and almost started laughing out loud. She couldn't help it.

Smothering a laugh, she waved him closer. "I think you're one of her favorites." She mewed quietly. She licked her daughters head gently and listened to her mews.

Protect me? "Wait, I didn't say that I can't protect myself! I'm super scary, see?" He tried to fluff up his fur to appear bigger and make an evil face. "Mwhehe. No one will attack me." he continued with what should look like a scary sneer. But he knew Firekit would probably laugh at this too, since Milkkit looked like a creamy fluffy furball.
"Ugh, that's not pathetic! I bet you've never been underground, so you don't really know how it is." He bet that she would be totally lost and would hit the dirt walls, instead of moving through it like a roaring fire. The thought made him cackle lightly.

But Milkkit was actually very happy that his friend wanted to run on the moors with him. Having a friend was better than anything else in the world! "You know, I wonder who Twilightstar will choose as our mentor." He didn't know any warrior other than his parents, but maybe one of them will pick someone among their kits?

"Well, I guess it's of no use complaining now. Alright, let's eat!" Without thinking anymore, he sunk his creamy muzzle into the feathery tiny body and grabbed a morsel from half the sparrow. He tried to chew everything in his mouth, but tiny feathers were getting stuck in his throat and he was forced to spit before he choked. "Ew! I can't eat it!"

Firekit let out a small mroww of laughter which led to a small giggling fit at Milkkit's attempt to act tough. She hadn't the heart to tell him he was probably the least intimidating ball of fluff she'd ever seen so she looked away. "Of course Milkkit, how could I ever forget? You'll scare all that darkness away just by being seen in it," She teased. "Plus I'm not scared of a little underground, what's the tunnel going to do? Eat me?" of course, the she-kit had never been underground and though she joked about it, the earth 'eating her' was a very real possibility that she hadn't put too much time into thinking about.

When Milkkit mentioned wondering about who their mentors would be, she nodded in silent agreement. "I hope I get a mentor who loves to play!" Firekit exclaimed, "I don't wanna be stuck doing training all the time when there are so many games that need my attention!". Of course, she wasn't even concerned about her future apprentice duties, she simply wanted to goof off and enjoy herself. And knowing her, she'd find a way to achieve this during the tasks of her apprenticeship.

Firekit took a small mouthful of the sparrow and closed her eyes as she chewed thoughtfully 'You can almost pretend this sad excuse of a bird is that plump and juicy rabbit'. Her thoughts were short-lived, unfortunately, as they were interrupted by Milkkit's complaint. She opened her eyes and looked over at her friend inquisitively until she understood the problem 'Oh yeah, he is quite young' she reminded herself. Offering a small understanding smile to the tom she began plucking some of the feathers out with her teeth "Try eating here," she said in between mouthfuls of feathers "You've got to tear the feathers off first if you want a proper mouthful of bird," she advised knowingly. After all, she had to learn through the same trial and error and was more than happy to pass along her wisdom.

Now that he thought of it, that wasn't completely wrong. He bet his light pelt would catch even the tiniest scraps of light from cracks and holes, so it would be like darkness fled from him! "You know, maybe it can't eat you.. but you can surely hit it. And then dirt and rocks would fall all over you!" The thought made him shudder, and he hoped no once would ever force him into a tunnel. "Seriously, aren't you scared about that possibility?" he stretched out his neck and fixed his gaze into hers. I'll know it if she lies now!

Uhm.. playful mentors? Milkkit didn't believe that such thing could actually exist, but who was he to break his friend's dreams like that? He nodded softly, thinking about how he would like his mentor to be. He glanced around the clearing trying to identify some particular warrior, but it was all the same: Milkkit didn't know anyone apart from his parents, and he doubted one of them would be a mentor to him. Maybe he could go and ask his sisters later, if they had already some idea.

The creamy kit spat repeatedly tiny feathers, but in the end he had to use his paw to free his tongue of the soft things that were still sticking there. After a last, quick lick on his chest he observed quietly Firekit's work and then helped her with the last feathers. Now the bird looked even scrawnier, and honestly kinda ugly. "Well, I hope it's good at least."
Milkkit gave Firekit a satisfied smile and offered her the first bite of their prey, sitting down to wait for her.
