ThunderClan: Life Before 2023's Sinkhole

Cinderpaw could feel her fur stand on end as Sparrowstar circled around her, before stopping gingerly at her side. The apprentice blinked for a few moments, exhaustion clouding her judgement, before realizing exactly what the leader was offering.

She froze.

She wished it would be that easy. That easy to take comfort at face value, to be able to feel pride in herself, to be able to trust again. Her ears pinned back as her eyes traveled in direction of camp. The leader's words felt more like a scolding than any motivational talk. It was real easy for her to wax poetic about Cinderpaw's 'accomplishments' but, according to Starclan and just about anyone who had been in her vicinity before she'd been kidnapped, she hadn't done anything. And what could she do at this point except believe them?

Quietly, she leaned against Sparrowstar. Even if she didn't think she needed it. Even if part of her wanted to scream. She didn't have the energy to fight anymore. Swimming had done nothing but pull more water into her lungs, so maybe it was just time she drowned.

"Go." She muttered weakly, head sagging towards the ground. She just wanted to sleep, already.

Fernwillow groaned at the weight of her own body when she stood up to get a piece of fresh kill. This pregnancy stuff was getting to her quickly. she thought.

Cloudspots’s eyes flashed with a mixture of anger and disappointment. It took a lot to get that sort of reaction out of him; normally, he was one of the most patient cats in the Clan. But, he really felt that Wisteriapaw had crossed a line here. If he could manage to see Cloudwillow as frequently as he did and still do his duty as a warrior, then she didn’t have an excuse.

“You’ve neglected your training for half a moon,” he said sternly. “You’d better have more to say for yourself than just an apology.” He didn’t like having to be hard on any cat, but in this instance he felt Wisteriapaw deserved it.

The black molly lay in her nest quietly keeping to herself, keeping herself busy by grooming and smoothing her already smooth fur. She had always prided herself in keeping herself somewhat cleanly and she would like to consider herself pretty. Yes, she was pretty indeed.

The dilute calicos fur shuddered, walking into the apprentice den for the first time. He had walked past it a few times as a kit. He honestly liked it in here without the retched smell of milk disturbing his sense of smell. He looked around, trying to find an empty nest that didn’t have another apprentices scent on it. Wait.. why was he acting like this? Everyone should at-least be following me about now in the future. Psh psh. He huffed, quickly slumping into a nest which he figured would be another apprentices. He wouldn’t bother with that rascal of an apprentice. Getting so worked up over a nest? Only kits would act like that. He settled down, he unsheathed and retracted his claws multiple times. Seeing how they gleamed everytime they shined under the cold sunlit cracks of the brambles. His claws ached for some action. Weren’t claws supposed to sink into things..?

He steadied himself from his intrusive thoughts. He was becoming softer and softer as he grew more mature. And he hated that. Absolutely did. Succumbing to such things wasn’t his style at all. His claws looked to be darkening every time his paws stretched out. His eyes faded into a dull green. He felt something curl up onto his fur, he swatted as his side. Almost digging his claws into his own flank without a second thought. His paw pads tingled. Raising it to see a small ant crawling over his pads as its antennas were beeping left and right. He inspected the ant glowing. As soon as it got in the middle of his paw.. BAM! He slammed his paw towards the ground. Completely squishing the ant as he skinned and rocked his paw back and forth making sure the ant didn’t survive. See that little ant? No one can survive my wrath! He grinned childishly. The ants small body was crushed as it lay flat. Spasming until it finally finished its final breath. He did a silent victory cheer in his mind. Wishing that this incredible moment wouldn’t be disturbed.

Another boring training completed by an exhausted Blazingpaw. Having a deputy as a mentor in reality was way different than what he had imagined at the last meeting. At least he can have a sweet nap till tomorrow, so that was a plus. Was. As he entered the Apprentices’ Den, he spotted his bedding being taken by Mottlepaw. That no good!

Blazingpaw rushed at the bed-snatcher, but stopped a couple heartbeats after he felt something sticky and squishy under his pads. Lifting one of his paws, the disgusted apprentice spotted a red splat on the ground. “What is this?” he exclaimed! He looked back at Mottlepaw. Anger clouding his eyesight. “Get off my nest! You can go ahead and sleep outside!”

Well, Sparrowstar's gaze proved difficult to hold on to as the leader went over her thoughts. She mentioned having noticed some things during the last meeting, and Batblood supposed she had a good sight from atop the Thunderwillow.

The only response he gave to the leader was a low hum and nod as he prepared to leave, but then something visibly changed in Sparrowstar's body language and look, and Batblood's attention flashed back to focus on her, brow frowning at her question. Yes, there only seemed to be him, Bumblebreak and Moosecrash left here now after Nectarflame, Birchheart, and Sunshadow had all disappeared in one way or another.

A few moments of silence before the muscular Keeper rolled his shoulders back and straightened up a little, dragging in a breath through his clenched teeth that became more like a groan than a sigh. "No." He mewed at last. "Too many of our clanmates have been inactive lately. I would have recommended Rainhound before, but she is missing, so is Shallowshiver. Cloudyflight seems like a good and loyal warrior, but she has been through a lot and a promotion might not be best for her right now. And I might have considered someone like Thrushfur, but with everything that has happened..." He hardly needed to finish that sentence for the leader to understand. "Echosong did seem calm and like a good warrior during that event, but she's been busy with other things lately it seems, and while Asterdance has potential, they're also deaf and can be a... lot." He wasn't considering the warrior's disability a weakness or a flaw, just an inconvenience here.

"So sadly, I don't really have any recommendations."

"They were attacked by a dog." Echosong explained anxiously. Her claws dug up dirt beneath her paws the longer the three stood there. Shallowshiver couldn't go much longer without medical attention and while she understood Sparrowstar's need for an explanation; she wished they could discuss this later. Every panged breath from the mauled warrior was like a slice to her heart.
Please just let them rest, I don't want to bring up their trauma right in front of them so soon. Please understand. She wanted to say, pleading eyes looking at Sparrowstar after a concerned glance at Shallowshiver.
"I'll be happy to explain everything to you while Sundust and Rosepaw treat them." She said instead.

AppleBreeze ate a vole which she got from the fresh-kill pile. Despite it being rather large, she was still starving. "Probably just the kits." She thought, thinking about how soon she would have them.
