"And how is that? How are they l-looking out for us? What do we owe to them for doing nothing except ref-refusing to see that they had a part in all of this too?!" She hissed, pelt beginning to bristle - though despite the fight in her words, she stayed locked to her spot. She held no anger for the leader, but rather for the stars that put her in this position. Cinderpaw was prepared to continue the argument, until...

The apprentice could feel herself clam up at the mention of Cindersky reached her ears. "How dare you...!" Okay, NOW there was a little anger. She should have imagine this would be brought up. She shifted uncomfortably in her spot, avoiding the leader's eye contact all of a sudden. She wasn't supposed to be angry, she was supposed to be grateful, because everyone else saw this as an inexplicable gift. It was another chance at life, they would tell her, what else was it other than a gift?

Cinderpaw didn't know what. "... Y'think I a-asked for this? Do you think it feels good standing here kn-knowing that no matter what I do it will never be e-enough to stop the stars practically reaching down and stealing our kittens from the the nursery?" The apprentice rasped, focusing on the much more interesting scenery past the den's exit. "Of course I feel indebted. Of course I do-don't wanna just dismiss her. She could have given this to a million other cats, she could have taken this herself, and now I'm here to be told she didn't. And I mean this, like, sincerely --"

She paused, staring down at her pale grey paws. The she-cat suddenly felt little, too little. Like she had been as she watched the former leader pad away and leave her to a life anew. "I'm sorry I'm not her."

Despite her suddenly gentle tone, the apprentice was still angry deep down. Part of Cinderpaw figured it was time she get back on track "Me b-being here-- it feels like a patch job. A punishment. For so, so ma-many reasons. I'm pissed at them, but not at her, and I have no reason why, Sparrowstar. An-and I still see no reason for them to judge us as worthy when they don't do a thing as we suffer. There's no be-benefits from following thecode, since Shadowclan doesn't seem to listen to a word of it and does just fine. I have never seen someone I care about die outside of our camp - aren't we supposed to be safe here? If be-believing in Starclan is what makes us a clan, then what the hell are the weasels still doing here?!"

All of a sudden, she found herself fired up again. "I'll watch my words. Won't even refer to her at the gatherings. B-b-but I want you to think on this, and prove me the hell wrong. When has believing in Starclan helped Thunderclan? Was it when they sent a million false prophets? Was it when they apointed Shadowclan's leader as a cat who ap-apparently can't even take a little squirrel callin' her the wrong name? What has it done for me?"

Quietly, the agouti apprentice turned away, and shrunk back towards the entrance. "I wish it was all easier. But praying to those who ignore us won't make it that way."

At that, she slipped out of the leader's den. Cinderpaw had fought far too many pointless battles to ignore another one that they were going to lose.

( @SpiritedWarrior @Wingnettle - just mentioning you both so I didn't have to make two separate responses with her reaction to Flame and Soot's posts, just her parting words/actions for context for whatever)

If Dovefluff wasn't so exhausted, she might eventually get upset from being referred to as if she wasn't present. As "the ShadowClan cat". But she didn't want to risk upsetting the fiery ginger molly, or even the calm gray tabby beside her. She couldn't risk anything. Ugh, but she was so tired of having to always walk on eggshells. In ShadowClan, because everyone around her were psychopaths, at the Gathering, even in her own family unit in her youth, where the slightest crease of a forehead would result in screaming and fighting and... other things.

 

Even though the bruises no longer patched her flesh, and her ears no longer rang from her mother's cruel language, and her eyes and throat no longer stung from sobbing and crying for them to stop, Dovefluff could still feel the tingle where her mother had struck her. Her brain still repeated the obscenities her father had snarled in her face.

These memories were the reason why she had the fight or flight reaction to Flameheart's anger. Fight, because some loyal tug in her told her to not leave Sootfur alone, because anger surely meant violence, but then she recalled the love he had spoken of between him and his mate at the Gathering. No. He... he didn't have the look in his eyes. She would recognize a kindred spirit.

"Thank you. T-thank you." She murmured, lowering her head shakily to Flameheart, then she turned to Sootfur. "Thank you for... for getting me here." Whether or not she would make the journey worth it was coming down to her talk with the tan tabby leader. Anxiety thrilled in her paws, and she turned away from the two mates quickly, for fear they would see the tears welling in her eyes.

Her wet, deep blue eyes looked at the sky briefly as she made her way to sit in camp. She could sense the.. the passion and care and love between the two cats, even with the fury that filled Flameheart. It... it was enviable. "Oh StarClan.... please be with me." She choked out, blinking the tears away from her now bloodshot eyes, round and full belly now swaying awkwardly as she wearily took a seat near the camp entrance. "Oh StarClan..... oh please, please be with me." This next prayer was a mere breath as the shaky queen tried to make herself look non-threatening as her stinging eyes darted around. Hopefully, the shadows held the ThunderClan leader.

And hopefully, the leader was as kind and fair as Sootfur had described.

Stars, Sparrowstar had now requested that he punish particular cats. Was having to perform patrols really difficult? In all honesty, it appeared that more responsibilities were being neglected over time. These kinds of issues haven't impacted Thunderclan nearly enough. Under the Thunderwillow, he tensed his muscles, but he wasn't quite angry. However, he was merely disappointed. He called to the cats who failed Bumblebreak's patrol, including his mate of all cats, with a trembling yowl. "Tallshadow, Mistylight, Dawnpaw, Embertalon, Quailfur, and Vixenpaw! Immediately, I want you all here. You all have neglected to follow up and responsibly complete your tasks. As you are all aware, we are in a severe leaf-bare season, and Thunderclan is in critical need of its warriors to remain on top of their responsibilities." He breathed out in frustration as he growled. "That being said, you will all need to suffer the consequences for failing to comply. I'm open to hearing from you if you have a valid excuse for not reporting back or going on patrol, though. If not, then go drag your tails and finish the necessary punishments."

The first were the hunting patrols, and thankfully Harefire took it upon himself to stay on top of his responsibilities. "Since you didn't even begin to show up to the patrols, you'll have to do hunting by yourself. Tallshadow, return to Giant's Rest and begin exploring. Report back what you have caught." He frowned. His disapproving whiskers twitched, She should at least show up some way.  Speaking of punishments, it was quite painful to even bring up the subject.

Along with an apprentice for whom he had reasonable expectations that she work well, he was quite disappointed with his mate. She watches cats like snakes, particularly with kits. "Bring Vixenpaw out to Firefly Cove once more, Quailfur, and report back what you have caught. I had at least anticipated that you would have been more effective about this hunting patrol." Naturally, he was playing it safe with his words, so he swatted his tail. With a warrior by their side, it would be difficult for an apprentice to fail such a patrol.

Finally, there was the border patrol, but he only had time to react since Dawnpaw immediately vanished after. He beckoned to the three cats while moving the corners of his mouth. It would be wise to look for Dawnpaw as soon as possible if she didn't show up at all, which would be a perfectly fine excuse for not performing any tasks. Disappearing while performing your obligations, however, is such a stupid move. "Embertalon, Mistylight, and Dawnpaw,  Please return and mark the Windclan Border, as I want you to do. If our efforts at drawing basic boundaries proceed as planned, Twilightstar will be able to quickly notice how poorly we mark our borders."

Having said all of that, he hoped that the execution of his first punishment roll went smoothly. Although he couldn't read minds, he would be happy to receive any criticism on his work.

Dawnpaw scurried over and listened. She nodded respectfully and sighed. She waited for her patrolmates and had a glint of sadness in her eyes. @Rizo @Spotty
