An old dark tom stood guard at the camp entrance, hunched over with his ratty pelt fluffed out against the cold. He grumbled several curses under his breath as the winter wind blew harder in his face, challenging him to go back into the elder's den, but stars forbid he goes back in there today. He'd rather eat dirt, and he'd tell you that, too. His old orange eyes occasionally scan the clearing behind him, observing the Clan going about there day doing whatever it is they do. Tssk. Dawnstar oughtta put some of these slackers to work. Crowstripe just might. Mmmhm.

"Why pick them when I can do it so much better?"
· · ─────── ·· ─────── ·
Magpiepaw was just minding her own business and drawing a few frogs in the snow. Sure, they looked a lot more like misshapen boulders or rocks, but that didn't matter! They looked awesome and anyone who dared to say otherwise would get a beating from THE ONE AMD ONLY.
Whilst Magpiepaw was doing some extraordinary art work, she looked up for a moment and noticed a cat hunched over near the clearing entrance.
Matted fur, check.
Bulky silhouette, check.
The "I know absolutely everything and all of these cats have NO IDEA what it was was like in the OLDEN DAYS!" look, absolute and undeniable check.
It was an elder. A stinky, stuck up, elder.
Magpiepaw didn't even try to hold back her snarl.
Look at her like she just murdered all of your kin and skimmed all the meat off your rabbit? Well, JOKES ON HIM because SHE KNEW HOW TO STARE AS WELL! HAHAHA!
Magpiepaw was done with these sags of unswept dust assaulting her ears or just being a pain. Now, she was going to take a stand against the hypocrisy! Today! Right now!
So, she did. She waltzed right up to the elder and sat her small frame right next to them. "Excuse me sir," the apprentice said not unkindly. "But is there anything you older cats do other than stare at cats like us defiantly?"
Oooo, big word! She'd have to remember that one for when she wanted to sound smart in conversations.
Btw, please tell me if you want me to tone down Magpiepaw's rudeness, I totally won't mind! :)
The center of Crowstripe's face scrunched up in annoyance as Magpiepaw approached him with what might be the lamest reason he'd witnessed to start a conversation with someone. Sheesh. Apprentices these days; terrible little boogers. Ungrateful, entitled, and downright selfish. And loud. Very very...loud. Kits like this certainly aren't worth his time of day, no sir-ee. You see, if she knew any better, she'd see an old man paying his dues to the Clan rather than sitting around whining at others. Like herself. Pity.
With a glint of disdain in his blazing orange eyes, he quints at her. "I oughtta wash your mouth out with dirt. Could do that instead, if you prefer..."
The not-so-little kit sat in the clearing, pawing and kicking at the powdery snow. It was sooooo boring here. It was stinky and stuffy and boring and the cats were mean and nosy and she missed her mom. Larkkit froze at the thought, ears drooping. She missed her mom. She missed her more and more the longer and longer she was forced to stay here. And yes, she was forced to stay here. She couldn't leave Moon and her siblings behind. And even she knew she was too young to brave the harsh winter alone. Her little nose crinkled and tears threatened to well up before she vigorously wiped them away. No no no. No weakness. She would get everyone out of here... someday. She hoped.
Darkfall was by no means a good dad. Or, if you asked him, that’s what he would say. He didn’t want to make excuses, but he was able to see where his short comings lied. His children didn’t like him all that much and hardly talked to him, and then he was so busy trying to play catch up from when he hit his head and temporarily lost his memories and the addition of his newest sons and daughters, that he was neglecting those of his first litter. Searching for Fallenkit had also proven to be time consuming, but that wasn’t a valid reason to not pay attention to his other children whether they liked it or not. He hadn’t grown up with a father or strong tom figure in his life and he was still trying to figure things out.
It was hard. Oh Stars it was hard. Having kits thrown onto you and suddenly put in charge of raising some young ones was not quite what he had been expecting on that outing for a patrol. It was okay though, now that he had his thoughts together, he was going to try and sneak some more time away to focus on the eldest four of his many children.
Speaking of… there was Larkkit right there. He still couldn’t for the life of him figure out why Heron had named her as such, but she did. She looked… sad. He didin’t know how to deal with sad cats, much less sad children. That was a skill he had never managed to be able to pick up during his almost 24 moon existence. Taking a deep breath, he made the decision to make the first move. He couldn't just leave her there all sad and alone out in the cold! It was his duty to do something. As a father, and as an enforcer. Right now instead of enforcing rules – he’d be enforcing happiness.
Feet crunching the powdery snow as he walked, the large tom sat next to his daughter, offering his not-so-fluffy tail to try and warm her up. His normally short coat filled out a considerable bit with the change of seasons, probably thanks to his father’s thick coat, but he wasn’t sure if it’d offer enough warmth for the young she-cat. ”Hey there Larkkit… Why are you so down in the dumps?” He asked cautiously, a half smile on his lips as he peered down at her. Ugh that was a total fail, but he didn’t know what else to say! Why was this so hard??

The apprentice shrugged her shoulders, her words laced with sarcasm, "No need! I already have my mouth full of dust from hunting a vole earlier. Plus, don't you elders already do that daily? I wouldn't be surprised."
Magpiepaw stared right back at Crowstripe, her clouded brown gaze just as challenging.
"I mean, c'mon! You lived a full life, yet your so grumpy and sour about everything! I genuinely have a fear of growing old."
That last part was a lie.
Sure, Magpiepaw had an ever growing distain for elders and their shenanigans, but she knew she could be the one to break the chain. She could break the mold because that's who she was! She was different, A MILLION TIMES DIFFERENT! And Magpiepaw was going to make sure everyone knew it.

Shadowlight paced through the shadows of the clearing, intent on avoiding any conversation.

The tom politely walked over to the warrior and nodded at them. "Hey are you alright?" he asked genuinely concerned because he was worried for his fellow clanmates it hurt him to see him hurt.

Shadowlight glanced up in suprise at the young apprentice. "Uhh…" her brain searched for words. She really was bad at talking, wasn't she? Now he was going to think she was crazy. "Yes?" She finally managed.

Shadowlight had been suprised when this cat had noticed her. But now he was sitting with her??? Her brain tried to process the best option. "Uh…what's your name?"

"Do what daily? Hunt voles or eat dirt?" Crowstripe asked flatly, his squint slowly relaxing into half-lidded boredom. Sheesh, she's a "me me me" cat, isn't she? Nothin' but trouble with those types. He really shouldn't be entertaining this one. "Gettin' old is only as bad as you make it. The grumpiness, on the other paw, comes from other things...from apprentices like you buggin' us on duty." Completely losing interest, the elder switched his gaze back to the horizon of the camp's entrance and dismissed her with a flick of his tail. "Run along now, Dustymouthpaw. Yer not gettin' any younger talking to me."
