~ BRIARSPLASH ~
stocky, large, & fluffy dilute gray tortie she-cat with goldish-green eyes; just a scratch
[ shadowclan enforcer | she-cat | 29 moons | abrasive, standoffish, loyal ]
~
Briarsplash bit back a snarl of annoyance. Marigoldpaw was nowhere to be seen! Had she even left camp, and the warrior was too fluff-brained to notice that the 'paw (despite being a much older warrior than her) hadn't even been following? Whatever. Shoving down her irritation for now, the Enforcer did her best to sort through the layer of undergrowth that was growing spiny as the last of the leaves died away, preparing for a harsh leaf-bare.
[ Roll: 20 | Perfect! ]
And right as she was slinking through, Briarsplash felt the undergrowth tremble, the sensitive hairs within her ears twitching. In a flash her paw lashed out, managing to slam down a critter that had its unlucky day. Huh... a squirrel. As she nipped its neck to end its life, the fluffy she-cat couldn't help but recall Hillstrider's words that day that they'd casually chatted in camp. The fact that he really enjoyed squirrels, as much as the tree-rats across the border rather... the thought made her snort in amusement, something warm flickering in her chest. And then immediately she stiffened, wrinkling her nose in disgust. Did she just laugh like that, all to herself, in the middle of the forest? Just from the mere thought of the ginger-furred warrior and his... strange attitude? Maybe she was losing it.
Straightening up and banishing those thoughts to the oblivion where they belonged, Briar shook the leaf litter out of her fur and returned to the meeting spot, eyes narrowed. "...Marigoldpaw never showed, eh?" She grunted in disapproval, the irritation clear in her golden-green gaze. Mistlewhisker wasn't going to like that; it had seemed the 'paw was already on thin ice, being the Clan-swapper she was. And Briar was peeved over having yet another patrol that had problems. No matter... they got some prey, and that's what counted.
"C'mon. We've delayed long enough for her," the Enforcer grumbled, picking up her two pieces of prey and starting to head back, tail lashing as she strained to contain her annoyance.
[ +1 squirrel ]

Dipping her head in greeting toward Briarsplash as the Enforcer returned, the warrior gathered herself to her paws and followed her Clanmates back to camp.
[ @squidz // @Kix - short reply because I'm trying to get out a Foxglovefire post for RiverClan and a Sunflowerpaw reply in ThunderClan LMAO ]

The Commander wasted no time bringing his patrol to where they needed to be. However, he was becoming more aware of the fact he wasn't familiar with this part of the territory. Well, he'd been here, but not actually... explored. This was new still. So, he would have to see how the hunting was. From his knowledge, it wasn't the best area so if the apprentices were loud or inexperienced, they wouldn't really scare much off.
He came to a halt, letting out a huff and watching it drift away on the icy breeze. He hated this time of the year. "Alright, we're going to split up into two groups of two. Unless Rookfire is feeling like teaching, I'll take whoever is the most inexperienced and get a crash course of hunting down with you. Now, pick your partner," he spoke, glancing between Muddypaw and Darkpaw.

Muddypaw felt her face suddenly heat up. Wuh oh... she hadn't had her proper hunting training yet... Starclan, she couldn't be the best warrior being sent on a patrol and not being able to catch anything! She better say something!
Approaching Hawkbite, she had an odd nervousness and embarrassment in her expression and movement, especially unusual for the very hyper and optimistic apprentice. "Hey, uh, you said you'd take whoever's more inexperienced? I uh don't know too much about hunting yet..." She mewed, a nervous smile on her face. Through her embarrassment, at least she could admit she didn't know, saved her quite a lot of trouble.

hawkbite left quickly which was pretty much exactly what rookfire wanted, waiting around for the other patrol members was torture most of the time and it also sort of stressed him out if he was being honest with himself for once. the evergreen grotto was a place the former enforcer would call familiar, so in addition to his general inability to read peoples expression and make anything out of it, he had no clue the enforcer commander himself wasnt nearly as experienced around here. shaking moisture out of his pelt, rookfire slowed to a trot before coming to a halt to hawkbites left. "i wouldn' mind teachin' either" he added briskly, letting his cool gaze move from the older tom to muddypaw and darkpaw before catching the brown mollies eye, considering words of reassurance for a moment before coming to the conclusion that he genuinely could not care less. hunting wasnt hard, she'd get the hang of it even if rookfire said nothing to make her feel better. and if she didnt. well, not his issue either.
he resisted the urge to step from paw to paw to get some relief from the cool ground and express his impatience, remaining unmoving besides the eventual flick of his ear or twitch of his tail, watching the air he exhaled whisp up like fog.

Well, the Commander wasn't going to wait on Darkpaw forever. He turned his head towards Rookfire, who offered, but then looked back towards Muddypaw with a flick of his ears. "Keep an eye out for Darkpaw. If they show up, take them with you, Rookfire. You can get started on hunting, I'll do a quick lesson with Muddypaw. Hopefully we can bring some prey back. Leaf-bare gets rough about that," the last part was mostly to himself. He'd flick his tail to dismiss Rookfire, casting a last glance towards the direction of camp hoping to see Darkpaw catching up before leading Muddypaw away.
"Alright Muddypaw. The first step to being a good hunter is the crouch. You want to get down low to the ground, keeping your belly fur and tail just lifted enough not to drag against the grass and leaves. You want to keep your weight distributed on your paws evenly so you're not putting more weight on your front or back legs," Hawkbite began the brief lesson, demonstrating his hunting crouch and waiting for Muddypaw to give it a try next.

The apprentice quickly rushed from camp, an apologetic (and awkward) expression lingering on his face. “S-sorry- I had to…uhm…take care of something real quick.” he apologized, looking at the two warriors and (slightly) familiar apprentice. He knew Mr. RookFire, at that seems to be who he was assigned to. Dipping his head respectfully, he started speaking his knowledge, “You- taught me hunting basics before…DawnStar went over stealth with med. Could….do you know more advanced stuff maybe?”

Muddypaw listened intently to what Hawkbite had to say. She found that all of her teachers lately had been very helpful. Straight to the point, perfect for her. Alright, belly and tail close to the ground, but not on the ground, weight evenly on all her paws, got it. She watched Hawkbite, mimicking him. Belly to the ground, but not too close, weight on all her paws, and then looking back up at Hawkbite for approval.
She hadn't even noticed Darkpaw arrive in her focus! Her fur fluffed up a bit, but then she calmed down soon after, fixing her crouch again. Oh yea! She remembered this apprentice! She had spoken with him before! Didn't he get that new role? An aid, right? She turned her head to Darkpaw for a moment, waving her tail a bit as a greeting before, once again, turning back to her crouch. Gosh, she had to stop getting distracted!

rookfire gave hawkbite a nod, choosing to linger for a bit before leaving without darkpaw, the apprentice still had time to catch up and he was pretty sure he had seen him in the clearing. "'right sir" he replied, keeping it short, and turned to pace until his assigned apprentice arrived. maw slightly agape, the warrior followed along the treeline, making note of the smells he could pick up from here. might as well get himself accustomed to hunting, it didnt really sound like dawnstar would be happy to let him near herbs again. curse whatever entity hated him enough to curse him to a live of hunting. boring, repetitive. sigh.
white tipped ear perked as darkpaw muttered an apology and turned his head to face him, claws extracting experimentally from his cooling paws. "we're not really in the position ta' do trainin' on patrol. 'can help ya otherwise but we need prey first, alright?" rookfire gave a flick of his tail, signalling the apprentice to follow as he moved to follow the scent of squirrel he had picked up on during the brief wait.
as the scent grew stronger and rookfire lowered himself closer to the ground, he kept his ear pointed backwards, listening for the apprentice but expecting him to keep a bit of distance and look for his own prey. striped tail moving from side to side slowly, he pushed through the undergrowth quietly, eyes remaining fixed on the spot the squirrel was resting in. frosty grass poking through a thin layer of snow stood in stark contrast to the hard frozen earth the animal had scratched out of the ground. burrying..unburrying.. some sort of nut. well, he couldnt really see, but it was easy to make assumptions, and he wasnt really opposed to those. especially not if stood in regards to such a minute detail of his day. once the dark feline had gotten to a sensible distance, he sped up for a pace before leaping at the squirrel and making quick work of it. limp and with warmth draining from its system quickly, jaws had closed around the muddy ginger fur of its neck.
Hawkbite's ears would twitch with acknowledgement when Darkpaw arrived, but he didn't question the apprentice's statement. Whatever he had to do, so be it, but the Commander would remember that.
His focus came back around on Muddypaw, watching the easily distracted apprentice crouch down. He'd offer a curt nod, before starting to stalk forward. "Move slowly and be mindful when you move. Stepping on any leaves or twigs means you can scare prey," he instructed, parting his maw and inhaling. He'd pick up on a couple scent, slowly moving Muddypaw through the territory with him until a mouse came into view.
"See that?" he gestured for the apprentice. "Watch this," Hawkbite would demonstrate his hunting technique. He'd prowl forward until he was within pouncing distance of the creature. His back legs tensed before the explosion of power sent him forward with outstretched paws. He'd land perfectly on the rodent, nipping the back of its neck and standing up with his prize, looking over his shoulder at the apprentice.
Making his way back over, he'd quickly bury the creature before crouching down. "Quick and easy. Biting the back of their necks kills them quickly, you next?" That was more of a rhetorical question than anything as Hawkbite led the duo a little further along. Another mouse came into view and the Commander would gesture for Muddypaw to take over.
