The Dividing Of LightningClan: Part One
Beefeather had a hunch something was wrong.
She had to admit, she had been concerned about Twistedwater becoming leader after Hazelstar’s sudden death by badger. Twistedwater seemed like he wouldn’t make a good leader. I mean, how could Twistedwater possibly make a good leader? He can’t hunt, can barely fight, and is only deputy because Hazelstar wanted his descendant, his grandson, to be leader. Twistedstar was an orange cat with sleek black stripes along his back, and a scowl twisted on his face.
He also had a crippled foot, which was probably why he had been chosen as deputy - Hazelstar always wanted everyone to feel equal.
Beefeather stepped out of the warrior’s den, only to remember something else. Oh, Fernkit’s apprentice ceremony is tomorrow. How could I have forgotten? Fernkit was Beefeather’s foster daughter. Probably from a rogue background, Fernkit had been found on the battlegrounds after hostile rogues invaded LightningClan’s territory.
The second Beefeather had laid eyes on the golden-yellow kit, she had wanted to take her in instantly. Beefeather had given Fernkit her name - Fernkit had been found by Firebird in a clump of ferns - and loved her like her own daughter.
Beefeather had four kits - Emberkit, Mossykit, Sleetkit, and Duskkit - but despised them for what they had done to Firebird and Grassykit. Mossykit had a gray tabby pelt just like Beefeather’s, green eyes, and a sweet and lovable personality. He wanted to be the best hunter in the Clans someday. Duskkit had a gray tabby pelt too, but with Firebird’s eyes - glowing amber. He was just happy sitting in the elder’s den, listening to stories about their Clan’s history. Sleetkit, who had the clouded leopard pelt of Mothleap, Beefeather’s mother, was fearless and eager to become a warrior. Emberkit was the spitting image of Firebird, with her ginger pelt, brown tipped ears and tail, and Firebird’s eyes… but Emberkit didn’t even want to be a warrior! She was willing to risk her family’s warrior legacy to… be a medicine cat!
Beefeather scoffed. Her family’s bloodline was full of great warriors, she wouldn’t stand to have it tainted by her own kit! I suppose I should go back to the nursery. Don’t want those monsters hurting Fernkit.
Beefeather walked back to the nursery to see the kits playing a game. “Look, if you cross this moss, you invade the camp.” Sleetkit explained to his siblings. “Then, after you invade the camp, you have to get past Fernkit and attack her, because she’s the Clan leader. If you attack her, you win, but only if you grab the moss while running back to your camp, which is the stick right here.” Sleetkit clawed a small stick at his feet. “Warriors, get ready to attack!”
The kits all charged forward, except Emberkit. “Emberkit, what are you doing? Aren’t you gonna invade FernClan?”
“No, I’m the medicine cat. See? I’ll help anybody if they get injured.” Emberkit pointed to a small pile of leaves by her paws. “Boring.” sighed Sleetkit. “All you pay attention to is herbs and being a medicine cat. Besides, Springleaf is old. If you become a medicine cat apprentice, he’ll be too tired to teach you anything.” “That’s not true! Springleaf would be a great mentor!” hissed Emberkit.
Why was Emberkit so dead set on becoming a medicine cat apprentice? Warriors were so much more important!
Beefeather remembered the day her kits had come back into camp, pelts dripping with muddy water, and neither Firebird nor Grassykit were there. He had taken them out to see the territory, and the way the kits told it, Emberkit had fallen into a Twoleg pipe. Firebird rescued her, but the other kits jumped in, trying to save them both. They had all gotten out, and it seemed like it was going to be fine, but then Grassykit slipped and fell. Firebird went back into the pipe after her. The kits waited for a very long time, but neither of them came back out of the pipe. There was no way the two of them could have survived. That night, Beefeather made her kits sit vigil for both of them, even though the kits were very young and had a hard time staying awake. In the middle of the night, Beefeather had a revelation. It was the kits’ fault that they’re dead. Ever since then, Beefeather had insulted, ignored, and practically abandoned her kits. She blamed Emberkit the most, because if she hadn’t slipped, the two of them would still be alive. She constantly reminded Emberkit of this. The talk she had had with the other kits… Oh, that was the best talk she had given in her life. “Why would you be so foolish as to jump in? I thought I had raised you better than that! Grassykit didn’t jump in!” “Yeah, and where did that get her? Oh, yeah. Dead.” piped up Duskkit.
Two days later, after Twistedwater had become Twistedstar, Fernkit sat at the foot of the Great Pine with Gorsehum’s three kits, Lavenderkit, Bumblekit, and Jumpkit, and Sedgepaw, a warrior apprentice whose ceremony had been delayed because his mentor, Deertuft, had been attacked by a fox the day Sedgepaw was supposed to have his warrior assessment. Now that Deertuft was fine, Sedgepaw could become a warrior. “Let all cats old enough- never mind, just get over here if you can walk, which, last time I checked, was everybody.” hissed Twistedstar from his perch on the fallen pine. “Fernkit, Bumblekit, Lavenderkit, and Jumpkit, I know you’re gonna say you’ll uphold the warrior code, so I’ll just give you your names and mentors already. Treadfoot, you train Fernpaw, Melongeode, train Bumblepaw, Mintroot, train Lavenderpaw, and, uh… Deertuft, you did good with Sedgepaw, I guess, so train Jumppaw. Oh, yeah, Sedgepaw, I forgot about you. Your new name is Sedgestrike, I guess. The Land of Endless Hunting honors you or whatever. Clan dismissed. Just get out of here already.”
Beefeather went to the warrior’s den to speak with the new mentors, especially Treadfoot, Fernpaw’s new mentor. When she got there, all she saw was a lump of tortoiseshell fur. “Deertuft!” Beefeather instantly recognized her sister, curled up in a ball. “Is everything okay? Do you need anything?” Deertuft raised her head. “Oh, Beefeather… I’m having kits!” “Now? Right now?!” yelped Beefeather. “Of course not, bird-brain! But… I’m worried. Do you think Twistedstar would have me exiled? He’s pretty harsh!” “Why would he exile you? New kits are a good thing!” reassured Beefeather. “B-but you saw how he made me a mentor… a-again. What if he’s doing that to hurt me, Beefeather? I almost died from that f-fox attack, a-and now…” Deertuft trailed off. Beefeather understood what her sister was saying.
If Deertuft was sent to the nursery to have kits, who would mentor Jumppaw? When Deertuft was in the medicine den for a moon (the longest moon of Beefeather’s life, because it was when the kits told her that Firebird and Grassykit had died, and she didn’t want her sister to die too) no one had mentored Sedgestrike. But, that was under Hazelstar’s rule. Maybe Twistedstar would be different?
Beefeather tossed and turned, waking up Sleetkit, who mewed in distaste, but quickly went back to sleep. Rosebreeze had recently had her kits, Frostedkit, Foggykit, Sunnykit, Blossomkit, and Cloudedkit, and the nursery was louder than ever. Thankfully, her kits had run them around the nursery, and now, everyone was exhausted and sleeping peacefully. Except for Beefeather. She was relieved when Springleaf came into the den and offered her some poppy seeds to help her sleep.
About an hour later, Beefeather was rudely awakened by a paw slapping her in the face. She looked up - it was Twistedstar. “You coming or not?” he grumbled. “Coming? Coming where?” asked Beefeather. She pulled herself to her feet. “Coming with us to build a new Clan,” said Twistedstar. Build a new Clan. The words rang in Beefeather’s ears until she had to shake her head to clear it. “Uh… what about the kits?” she asked with a fake I-love-my-kits-so-much voice. “Beefeather, don’t lie to me. I’ve seen how you treat them. You only have eyes for that rogue apprentice- for a good reason. She’s smart. Smart enough to say yes. All the apprentices and warriors said yes. The only reason I’m asking you, Beefeather… I want you to be my deputy.”
Beefeather’s ears perked up. She had always dreamed of ruling a Clan someday. She would have Fernpaw. She might never have to see her kits again! “Yes!” yelled Beefeather. She clamped a paw over her mouth. “Oops, sorry, Twistedstar, I didn’t mean to shout. It’s just… I never thought I would hear those words. I’m getting up there in age.” whispered Beefeather. “You’ve only had one litter, Beefeather. But… one small request…” said Twistedstar. “Yes? What is it?” “Sleetkit comes with us.” No! “Look, I get that you don’t like him. You have a good reason not to, Beefeather, but he’s strong. I took him to the training sands to have him battle with the apprentices, and he beat them all by himself.” said Twistedstar. “All right. I’ll come. He’s only one kit, after all. He’s not Emberkit.” huffed Beefeather. She poked Sleetkit awake. “What? What is it? Are we going somewhere?” She made sure the rest of her kits were in Rosebreeze’s nest, and then turned back to Sleetkit and answered him.
“Yes, my son. Today is the first day of the rest of all our lives.”
