crowwhisker a lithe, smokey tom with glaring, pale-blue eyes
fourteen moons | post: 6
the young warrior watched, with eyes wide open, as the medicine cat--former medicine cat--was stripped of their rank. wolfhawk, now wolfpaw, newly-made apprentice of the deputy. hollowpaw, though keeping their name, was not completely free of punishment. the looming threat of exile was enough for even crowwhiskers hairs to stand on end. he saw, behind the deputy and the failures of the clan, flintclaw, a warrior who had given his aid to fight off the otters, and who had yet to be repaid for his service. there were many others, the boy knew, who had given their lives for the fight. the weight of the situation sat heavily upon crowwhiskers shoulders--who would be healing the cats of thunderclan now? hollowpaw, in his lonesome?
wolfpaw admitted, now, to wanting to step down, and crowwhisker yowled! why keep such a thing to oneself? the health of the clan depended on the medicine cat's with to heal! and, even after the death that had befallen those that had given their all to protect their clanmates, wolfpaw had the nerve to cry! his understanding grew, then, of the rage that flintclaw must have felt. "he does not deserve the ground he stands upon," came the toms voice. "he does not deserve this clan--this clearing!" for the anger that powered his words coursed through his veins and down to the earth below him.
"how dare he?" came a final choke of words. crowwhiskers pale gaze was a glare, staring a white-hot hole into the former medicine cat.
These healers. This. This isn't just the otter's fault, it was their fault too. Their fault. Quackpaw. She had been in the medicine den. She really was in there, she was helping the non-medic heal Muddy. Non-medic. A she-cat who was neither Wolfhawk or Hollowpaw. Neither of them. Of course the apprentice had been focused on Muddy-buddy. She didn't pay attention to everyone else in the medicine den. She chose to spare herself from the headache. She just stayed there WAITING who knows how long for the medicine cats to heal Muddy. No wonder it felt so long, they weren't even DOING anything, of course it HAD to be a random warrior that just so happened to know what to do to save Muddy. She had known Wolfpaw only asked Muddy to swallow, she knew. But they STILL left Muddy. They left Muddy to die.
When she was there waiting for the medicine cats to help Muddy. Back in the medicine den, she was right after all, Wolfhawk was a FULL MEDIC. He should know what to do, or else he should STILL be Wolfpaw. Well? He is now, but maybe if Bumble had picked a better medicine cat the otter patrol would've been healed quicker and Quackpaw wouldn't have worried as much as she did for MUDDY. Her MENTOR. "too late, no amount of apology would heal any otter wounds" Now was too late for remorse. Too late for tears. Too late. Nothing would change. Nothing. No
[eh? Like my sig says, my character's (in this case Quackpaw's) thoughts aren't my own!]

This was all his fault. Wolfhawk clenched his jaws, worried about what fate he would meet. Exile? Death? All the options seemed to be on the table. All because he had been stupid. The large tom watched as Spiderthroat exited the den. As soon as the deputy started speaking, the medic hung his head in shame, trying not to break. He held back a snarl once mudhound had come up. He had chewed up the herbs, he only asked them to swallow. What is with everyone getting the story wrong?! He knew it was not the time to protest however.
Hollows wasn't getting demoted. But. As soon as the deputy turned to him, he shrunk. Wolfhawk just wanted to crawl into a corner and die right then and there. Instead they were being scolded and humiliated in front of the entire clan.
"You are no longer Wolfhawk, Medicine cat of ThunderClan. You are Wolfpaw, apprentice."
No. It was gone. All of it. Green eyes became tearful, his brown pelt bristled. He had lost all of it. Not because he had done it willingly, like he had hoped. Because he was incompetent, stupid, and had a lack of a brain. Nine moons of his life had vanished in the blink of an eye. Wolfha- no. Wolfpaw felt like the same scared apprentice trapped under that damn tree. He couldn't breathe.
His inner doubt thrived from this however. You were never good enough. Should have left when you could. Look what happened now. It's your fault. Always. Your. Fault.
Should have left when you had the chance. "I wanted to step down," he said, voice barley above a whisper. "B-Before the otters, I-I wanted to leave. But then Bumblestar didn't wake up, a-and I needed to do everything. I wanted to talk to her. I wanted to tell her that I wanted to retire. A-And i'm sorry. I'm so so sorry," the tripod muttered, tears streaming down his face. He got what he wanted, but not in the way he had hoped. He would try. He would try to be a good apprentice, try to let go of his past and learn from his mistakes. But at the moment, it felt utterly hopeless.
Public humiliation it is, then. Spiderthroat yells. Cats gather, their gazes scathing and they mutter either out loud or under their breaths. And Hollowpaw can't bring himself to believe it's unneeded. He hadn't thought himself arrogant or that he'd known or been better than anyone else all thanks to his rank before all this, but Spiderthroat's words plant the thought in his brain and, even as he shrinks to the ground, belly flat against the dirt and ears pinned to his head, he cannot help but wonder if maybe he really had thought of himself that way.
There is no demotion that faces him. But the no demotion is probably far worse than actually being demoted. With it, comes a promise of exile - probably a hidden threat of death, too - if he messes up even slightly one more time. It's meant to scare him, it's meant to light a fire under him, it's meant to tell him exactly where he stands at the moment. And where he stands is on a patch of leaf thin ice in the center of the ocean. No way out. No way to safety. But his feet are still on relatively solid ground for the time being, even if it cracks and wobbles. He isn't drowning yet.
Wolfhawk-- Wolfpaw-- is not as fortunate. His demotion is done with malice and what Hollowpaw can only fabricate in his own interpretation of the anger in Spiderthroat's voice as vindictive glee. Hollowpaw does not take pleasure in all that's said, but he can't feel as though this is the wrong course of action. The only reason he himself does not face the same fate is because he'd tended to Dragonflycliff. He'd played first responder to Bumblestar's wounds but from there... nothing. Incompetence. His fault she'd lost another life. Not Wolf's. His. He has half a mind to point that out, but Hollowpaw is not a glutton for punishment, and he thinks Spiderthroat already knows this, anyway. There's no point bringing it up.
He nods, minutely, an acknowledgment. He wants to retreat into the crowd, to vanish from sight, but he forces himself to stay rooted to the spot. He has half a mind to offer some form of comfort to Wolfpaw, but he instead just curls his tail in tighter against himself. This will not happen again.

Hickorysmoke growled at this, the tom stepped up, ears pinned. "Spiderthroat. Because of this I'd like to take out patrols to collect any herbs we are missing." Hickorysmoke's holden gaze glared at the two medicine cats. A waste of potential, truly.

He watched as Hollowpaw shrunk, he watched as Wolfpaw began to finally feel remorse for what he'd done. Or lack of what he was supposed to do. Ears twitched, tail lashed. He'd finally found out what he wanted to say. And how.
"Sparrowpelt." he called ( @SuspiciousMindz ) , "Go grab Treetiger. Wake her up if needed, if only for a little bit. Bring her up front beside the medicine cat apprentice, and apprentice." he instructed. He didn't need her fully awake, he just needed her awake for a moment. He didn't understand how she did what she did, but he was sure it tied back to why she was so tired.
"While he's grabbing her. Wolfpaw. I don't care that you had planned on retiring. You didn't. And instead you're getting fired. It takes guts to admit you need to step back, but you seem to lack that. You needed to do everything, but you didn't do anything." he shot back.
But. With that. His rage began to simmer. They both seemed to regret their lack of action. That, although not nearly what he wanted. Was enough. Either way, he still turned to Hollowpaw.
"You will not be the Medicine Cat. You will remain the Medicine Cat Apprentice, you will report every moment you get training, every moment you learn something that will support healing your Clanmates. Doesn't have to be verbal reports. Simply come see me is all I'll need. As soon as Bumblestar wakes up, it'll be passed to her, or stay with me. It's undecided." a pause.
As he was waiting for Sparrowpelt to get back, a voice called out from the crowd. His anger was simmering, but it wasn't gone. Without looking at the warrior he answered with a simple "I don't care for those who try 'n' do good deeds in order to get a rank. Sit down until you're needed." was all he said towards Hickorysmoke.
"Treetiger." he called, assuming Sparrowpelt had come out with a rather Sleepy Treetiger at this point in time. "Do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?" he asked. If Bumblestar didn't wish for this, she could smack him later. But right now he needed to make sure they were stable. The otters were gone...but he needed to ensure some semblance of peace was kept. That and he really didn't want to deal with those who attempted to do good deeds to get noticed for a potential rank. So here he was, wiping that out right at the gate.

The large tabby flinched at Spiderthroats words, nearly refusing it due to the state the warrior was in. She could barely hold herself up, but alas, he'd dip his head and sling towards the Medicine Cat Den.
It'd be a few minutes, but sure enough, Sparrowpelt would return with an ataxic warrior who was leaning on him. It wasn't a heavy lean, she seemed determined. For whatever reason, the mention of Spiderthroat wanting to speak to her really got her to her paws and moving. Whatever magic that was, he wanted it for the days he really dragged.
The next set of words made his eyes go wide. The deputy was really asking her that?? Right now?? He'd toss a glance in her direction, waiting. Would she really be in the state of mind to answer this with true meaning? Spiderthroat surely thought so... Sparrowpelt did not. It worried him. Especially with the way she proceeded to answer...
He was just trying to be helpful for stars sake. Why were cats like this? He didn't want the responsibility of medicinec cat. He wasnt a good fit for that by a long shot. The ombre brown tom made a small glare at the deputy. "So much for trying to be helpful.." He grumbled, why couldn't spiderthroat see that Hickory literally was only trying to help out.

That was all her dreams had consisted of. Constant states of running and never escaping. Giant paws swung heavy, shaking the grounds around her as she dodged away. Claw marks scored heavy gashes in the grounds that didn't truly exist. This black hole had shapes, no light and that was all. Shadows laughed and reached out. Everywhere was a nightmare.
She only had nightmares.
This one had lasted a whole week.
"TREETIGER! GET UP"
"GET UP"
hey.. Tree...
________________________
"Treetiger... hey..."
She jolted awake... Straight into the body of S/parrowpelt. Her paws were flailing but were soon contained by the fluffy tom. She'd stare wildly up at him, utterly confused. How long had she been out?! Her mouth was dry, she was parched, but she would be okay. She'd just clear her throat a couple times before finding her balance sitting up.
"Hey! Is okay, is okay... Sorry ta wake ya.. Spiderthroat is wantin' ya."
Oh... oh that was new actually. Her former mentor never seemed to want her presence at all. Well, that was what she could pick up around the ringing in her ears. Up onto her paws she got. It was unsteady and she had to lean on the warrior as she made her way out into the clearing.
What awaited her was another nightmare. She could feel her heartrate spike as all eyes were on her entering the crowd surrounding Wolfhawk. What was happening??? What the hell did she miss?!?
"You saved me... you saved me!" It took on the voice of Spiderthroat. Messing with her brain as her blurry vision adjusted to the lighting and as the ringing in her ears finally started to calm down.
Unfortunately, the ringing didn't die fast enough as Spiderthroat started speaking. Her eyes blinked multiple times, for some reason, the words he was saying weren't matching his lips. She sat up away from S/parrowpelt, subtly tilting her head in the deputy's direction. Her gaze wandered away from him, unable to focus on one thing right now.
"Treetiger... thank you for everything..." Odd... her eyes shifted back to the deputy. That didn't seem like him. Only a muffled voice coming from his direction, though, and it seemed to be clear when she didn't look at him. Maybe it was the way her ears were placed? The ringing was growing more dull... "Do you promise-" She looked to her paws, swaying for a moment. His voice becoming distant to the ringing and throbbing in her head as her friend spoke up. At least they could listen to whatever he was saying.
Say yes. Just say yes!! SAY YES. It screamed at her, drowning out whatever Spiderthroat was saying. This time it attempted taking on the distorted voice of the dead medicine cat that so rudely took it over.
What are you doing?! LOOK AT HIM. Sorry...
Treetiger deadpanned to Spiderthroat. SAY YES. Gosh, her head was starting to pound with how much her friend was yelling! Treetiger took a moment, studying his face. This seemed like a serious conversation taking place... still, she obeyed her friend and gave her former mentor a small nod. "...Yes..." Now what did she just agree to? GOOD. So proud. Make everyone proud...oh everyone... her gaze shifted to the cats around the clearing, widening with slight panic.
To calm herself, her claws sank into the ground and her gaze -- that unblinking stare -- bore into Spiderthroat instead, almost begging him to let her retreat back to the dark hole of the Medicine Cat Den.
The tom sat within the crowd more up front to see what spiderthroat was going to say to the two medicine cats, to see how the deputy was going to chew the two out. Risingstorm watched on stating how sparrowpelt and treetiger had done more that the two medic duo, that he coudnt deny, he saw what the two could do with his own eyes, and treetigers' weird magic. Next the deputy went on about the incompetence that the two did leaving his clanmates to bleed, leaving everyone to bleed to death if treetiger and sparrowpelt hadnt stepped in, If he and mountiantalon didnt step in to move spider into the med den it was likely the deputy would have died too.
It was foolish that the two medcats had hardly done anything for two weeks, risingstorm saw how deathly the leader had looked, it was no wonder she lost a life…Oh! Well thats a turn risingstorm wasnt expecting- Well not fully anyways. The tom remained silent hearing how hollowpaw would keep his rank, and well- Wolfhawk would not be- fair it was a fair punishment for his crime. Losing his rank. THe hornet stared at Wolfpaw; he didnt say anything as his gaze turned to hollowpaw, the one lucky enough to keep his rank, but rested on a thin sheet of ice.
The hornet did feel slightly bad for the two apprentices, It must have felt like the world was ending, to be fair if it happened to him he would have felt shattered if he had been removed from his rank. The tom sighed and stood up as he heard wolfpaws response and only shook his head at it. At least they seemed sorry enough. Then he was shocked at what was next the deputy asked for treetiger and once she arrived, well every clan cant have a medicine cat, AND it seemed like treetiger was being promoted- Well that surprised him. Treetiger as medcat? He approved; sure she was a tad weird, but hey she did more than the wolfpaw and hollowpaw. Once treetiger said “yes” risingstorm sat back down, looked like they had a new cat on the team.
