Birdsong dove off a rock and into the water. He swam behind Moonkit and nudged her up to shore. He smiled and said "it's ok... Daddy's here...." He started grooming her to comfort her

He nodded and found a clear spot of water and out a stick on it so she wouldn't float away. He put her in and splashed some water on her

Good thing we've got the river here to get rid of it, right?" She asked, looking back at the rapidly moving water. She hated how quickly it moved sometimes. She hated how hard it was to get ahold of the swirling water, but at the same time, she loved it. The freedom of the current, the way that it went wherever it wanted-- and did whatever it wanted-- made her feel more at home then ever. She loved it out here. It was so beautiful, and it made her feel like she didn't need to keep up an appearance. It made her feel like she truly was at home. Summerpaw glanced at him and for a moment, her hues looked proud and full of her arrogant nature before they fell at his expression. "No. No, I'm- I'm not alright. If you want the truth, I'm scared. I'm scared, Brackenpaw. When- when SkyClan came, and were fighting for the side I knew was right, to free our Clan, I thought...I thought something might happen to you. And I would lose the best friend I've ever had. And what if something like that happens again? What if we have to fight like that again, and something does happen to you?" Summerpaw's light green hues looked close to tears, but at this point, she couldn't have cared less. She was terrified. Terrified that her nightmares, the nightmares she'd been holding onto for so long, were going to come spilling out. Like some of them already had. "I don't want to lose you. Not now. Not ever." She took a shaky breath, before looking back at the water. That was the closest Summerpaw had ever gotten to telling someone she cared. Because she just didn't want to get too attached. She knew cats died. She knew cats moved on. But Brackenpaw was different, he wasn't just some cat that she knew. He wasn't just some random cat that she had met one day, he was...different. And because of that, she knew she couldn't stand losing him. He was her best friend-- there was no way to find another cat like him, because as far as she knew, there wasn't one...anywhere. And even if she were to get lucky, even if there happened to be another cat like him, that cat could never take Brackenpaw's place.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to- to tell you all that. I must be out of my mind." Summerpaw mewed. Now the fear was obvious in her green hues, and she was looking for an escape route to dart away into the brush, away from him, just so she could gather her thoughts. She had let her guard down. She had let her guard down and now she was going to get hurt, and that was all there was to it.
The calico tom nodded in agreement. Nothing was better than washing off in the river. Feeling the currents of the rapid water rushing by comforted him. Brackenpaw was only half listening as he swishing his paws and tail through the water. He watched his fur gently swaying one side to the other as the water pushed it. The apprentice dug his claws into the sand, noticing that the current was slowly getting stronger. He wasn't to worried, he wasn't going to get swept away too easily. Brackenpaw's ears perked up in interest as Summerpaw spoke again. The words she spoke shocked him. And without him realising it, his jaw slowly went down to form a small gap between his teeth. "I....." Brackenpaw tried saying softly, but he couldn't really find the words. He had certainly not been expecting that at all. No one had ever spoke in that kind of way before to him. And he wasn't made, oh no definitely not. If anything, he was grateful.
Brackenpaw felt warmed that someone felt that way about him. He was thankful that Summerpaw wasn't like the rest of the cats he talked to. She enjoyed his company and she was his best friend, every other cats who spoke to him would yell at him and bully him for being a half-clanner. He had to put up with that every day. To have someone like Summerpaw was a great thing. The apprentice was always overjoyed to see his best friend after a long day of harsh words. Brackenpaw just didn't know she had all those emotions going through her. Now, Brackenpaw seemed to appreciate Summerpaw more than ever.
What shocked the RiverClan apprentice the most, was that she had actually said all those things to him. Of all the cats to say that to, she had chosen him. No one had ever said something so private to him. He wasn't so sure how he felt about that. Perhaps confused would be the best word to describe him on that topic.
The calico tom felt emotions he had never felt before around her. He felt proud and extremely lucky. Sure, he had a terrible time having to put up with all the insults from other cats, but he had been lucky enough to find a cat like Summerpaw. He had someone who didn't treat him the way that everyone else treated him. He was lucky. He had the kind of best friend that every cat wished for.

"I. I-It's fine. I just didn't expect you to say all that," Brackenpaw stammered, mumbling as he got to the end of his sentence. He didn't mind at all. He felt better than ever to be honest. "I guess I just wasn't expecting anything like that," Brackenpaw said softly. He seemed to have forgotten that he was standing in the middle of a rather fast moving river. His claws were slowly pried from the sand but the apprentice took no notice what so ever.
Brackenpaw's eyes furrowed as he felt himself moving. And he wasn't making himself move. Panic flooded into his eyes as he realised he was being carried away by the water. "U-Uh Summerpaw?" Brackenpaw started with uncertainty and worry. He tried to paddle against the current, but it was just too strong. He was being swept away.

The female was embarassed. And worried. Why had she gone and said all that? Now he was going to think she was crazy. And perhaps she was-- she had gone and spilled her heart out, but now she was going to have to put all her feelings back. She knew better. She knew better then to do that, and yet it was obvious that she didn't. Because she had done it anyway, and now she was going to have to pay for it. Things were quickly going downhill, and Summerpaw had absolutely no idea what to do about them. She shifted her weight uneasily, and glanced down at her paws. "Sorry. I just felt like-- I could trust you with it." She mewed in a gentle voice. For the moment being, she felt safe. Like nothing bad could happen here. The feline barely noticed her friend beginning to drift downstream. But his voice cut into her thoughts, and her hues opened wider in alarm. "See if you can find something to cling onto. Anything! And hold on, I'm coming!" She mewed with alarm in her voice. The soft tone was gone. Her daydream was gone. This wasn't a fairytale....safe places like the one she had thought of didn't exist, they were always a fairytale. This was real life. This was her trying to survive, and now she had to save her best friend.

Summerpaw tried to find a place where she could jump into the stream. Her expression became frantic, hues opening wider in panic. The realization of the moment was coming over her-- he was going to die. He was going to die, or drown, and there would be nothing she could do about it. She was going to be stuck here, standing on the bank, and she would be forced to watch. I can do this. Summerpaw looked into the swirling water and felt a shudder go down her spine. She was RiverClan-- supposed to like swimming-- but being of loner descent, she had a longer, fluffier pelt that got waterlogged and dragged her down. StarClan, please don't let me die... actually, please don't let Brackenpaw die... please, you can't do this... she thought, before jumping into the water.

It was colder then it looked. And it swirled all around her, the current dragging at her long pelt, trying to pull her down with a cold, clammy feeling. But she still headed towards her friend, determined that she would do this right. If they both survived this, she would-- explain. Maybe. No, she would wait... it could wait, right? There was no need. One near-death experience wouldn't mean anything. Summerpaw was a strong swimmer, but the current was strong for her as well. Well this was a stupid thing to do. She thought, feeling fatigue beginning to take over. But the thought that her friend-- her best friend-- needed her still drove her onwards, forcing her to take control of her tired limbs and exhausted mind and forcing her to swim onwards. After a while she let the current carry her in that direction, not giving it too much control, and still moving every once in a while to catch up to the tom, but she managed. She was nearly there. She was going to make it. In a moment they would both be safe, and Summerpaw would be satisfied.

"Lilyshade...come on get up. We're almost at camp. You can sleep in your moss nest.I'll even change your best to new fresh smelling moss if you'd like. Just please, let's continue. We can stop training if you're too tired. I just don't want you to be in this cold." He gently stepped and came behind her, laying down against her pelt, at least to emit some heat into the both of them.
A little chuckle escaped Lilyshade's muzzle at Tornadopaw's overdramatic reaction. She struggled to sit up, exhaustion dragging at her. "I'm fine," she rasped. "Just a little tired and my paw hurts," a smile tugged at her lips. "You know, from tripping over that root and almost dying," she teased. The cold snow pressed into her paw pad as she tried to stand. She got her back paws under her and her front right paw, but she couldn't put any weight on her front left paw. A hiss escaped as she slipped and instinctively put down her injured paw. "Mouse-dung," Lilyshade muttered. "I think I sprained it." But she stubbornly picked up the fish she dropped and stood next to Tornadopaw.

@Empress Of Evil

Tawnyshade leapt to his paws and extended his front paws into a stretch. He inhaled and let the fresh scents of prey wash over his scent glands. The tom picked up the scent of shrew and headed off in the direction it had come from. His ears swiveled around, searching for the little scuffling sounds of the tiny rodent. Tawnyshade narrowed his eyes as he found the source of the mouth-watering aroma. He licked his lips and bunched his muscles, ready to leap out at any moment. The tiny rodent paused for a moment before going back to it's scuffling. The tom leapt from the reed beds and gave the rodent a quick nip on the back of the neck, crushing it's spine. He purred in satisfaction and scooped up his prey. Tawnyshade padded back to the reed beds and quickly burried his fresh-kill.

Geckoleaf's own thin, striped tail swished to the other side, signaling her slight change in emotion. The cold air it pulled along as it moved simply chilled her further, and another slight shiver trailed up her body. A tiny gasp was elicited from her; at this point, she probably should be used to the cold, but the feeling of being back, in reality, seamed oddly strange and foreign; the frozen territory was far removed from the blood red landscape that she had narrowly escaped.

Geckoleaf herself felt apprehensive about being dragged back into a vision; it had been bad, probably on of the worst she had experienced, and she didn't know if she could keep back the demons that plagued her a second time, especially in such short a gap. The barrier in her mind had been repaired by a mixture of her efforts, and Mistfall's kind words. For now, it held sound, feeling stable and sturdy- of course, that was only for the moment. What if it happens again? What would I do- what I could I do, even? she thought to herself, worry filling her; anything could set her off, potentially, and she'd have to tiptoe through conversations, to make sure nothing was mentioned of gore and death. She gulped down worry, and once more looked up at Mistfall, the silver of the tabby's face being oddly assuring.

More threads of icy breeze weaved through her short coat; it was relatively protective, but more suited to the mild weather that RiverClan usually received. Usually, she had enough time to keep it in pristine condition, something that most warriors couldn't say, and to see her disheveled and messy was rare, and even rarer during the winter months when everyone was kept indoors, and given more time to groom and attend to personal hygiene. The only other time in recent memory was when she had fallen from the ridge, and broken two legs- one of which her newfound power had healed, and the other being bound to keep her from using it. Even now, the fiery molly tottered precariously on her three good legs, despite the offered help of Mistfall. It was quite annoying to have to hobble about like she had been doing for the past several days- but, her leg was nearly healed, it being only a fracture, and soon she could take the wrappings off and do mild physical therapy to help the atrophied muscles heal.

The softly whispered question from Mistfall was a bit sudden, but she didn't react much; Geckoleaf was too emotionally drained to really feel anything particularly potent. Yet it still struck her deep, and she winced slightly but decided it best to speak; she had realized very quickly that the basis to any genuine and true relationship was clear and honest communication. She took a steadying breath and allowed herself a moment to reflect, before beginning to speak about the sensitive topic.

"It was, before anyone else, my mother. She was never really there- my sister and I was primarily raised by the other nursery queens. Blueflame was a fine warrior in her prime when she became pregnant, and I don't think she really wanted either of us. So, one day, she just up and left us. Then went our father; I think he really loved us, but it didn't matter. Blueflame controlled him, and he'd do anything for her. It wasn't like they were abusive- they just didn't care. So, I and my sister become orphans. We were cared for by the queens, as I said, but they didn't really love us- it was just our duty. When I became an apprentice, my sister left me. I loved her so, so much. I don't know about where she went- just.. just one day, she was gone. So I was alone; I had a few friends, but none terribly close- Cougarstorm has always been a close friend, but he had other duties then me. During this time, I became very, very close with Marshsnow- you remember her, but you were only a kit then. She was the closest thing to a mother, or even a parent, I've ever had. Only a few days after I received my full name, she died- and then she never even talked to me in a dream. I don't know if she's really gone, or if there's some bigger purpose. As an apprentice, I also became close with a young warrior by the name of Melodysong- she was like a sister. But she also left, for a tom. I guess I just have bad luck," she murmured, followed by a dry laugh. Her eyes sunk to the ground, and she sighed in pain and frustration.

"And, that's not accounting for any of the many patients I've lost. I don't really think I should say more about that."
She looked up at Mistfall, her eyes dull from pain and exhaustion. She offered a weak smile, but the longing for friends and family who had gone was evident on her face. Her smile quickly dissolved into a small frown, and her eyes flicked away for a sheepish moment, before looking back up at her.

"I guess... I just assumed you'd be like everyone else. Here for a moment, gone the next, like a bit of scent on the breeze. I certainly don't blame you if you do leave- I'm just the weak medicine cat, taking up food and space and not helping for patrols. To most warriors, I really am just a nobody- all I'm good for is fixing scratches, or a bit of a cough. It's fine. I chose this life, and I'll stand by it, for better or worse,"Geckoleaf mewed, a tiny bit of a sarcastic smile making the edges of her mouth quirk up. It had been a long time since any warrior had seen her as much more than the lowly healer- as anything except expendable. And the fact that Mistfall put any effort into their conversation made Geckoleaf perk up immediatly, made her feel alive and loved, something far, far too rare in her life. "I guess, what I really mean to say, is thank you."
Mistfall was still worried about Geckoleaf, but her worries seemed to put on ease - only slightly - when she noticed the medicine cat’s tail gave small waves, swishing on the frozen ground. The movement was a sign of change in her mood. It was a relief to see that she seemed to be getting better, though the warrior was still on edge just in case it were to happen again. What even was that? She was sure it was dangerous. Of course for the mental health, but something could happen to her physical health as well. Once again, Mistfall had to bite her tongue in order to keep from questioning about what had just happened.

In honesty, the warrior wasn’t sure why she seemed cold. This wouldn’t be Geckoleaf’s first leaf-bare, and despite having shorter fur, she should have become use to the cold weather around this time. Though she then realized that it wasn’t due to being unprepared for the whether, but rather being disheveled and unprepared due to her mental state. Mistfall herself was still a bt… messed up, but she wasn’t as bad as Geckoleaf - she basically only had a breakdown after Fallow had been killed.

The silver, grey and white warrior had a… dark past. In fact, she only knew of one other person who knew of her past - and that was because she had to tell him. But not even her close friend Russetstar knew. But if he did, would he just kick her out of the clan? She had broken a rule, and she wasn’t so sure he would choose her over the code like that. Mistfall wasn’t sure if she could tell anyone else besides Royalwatcher. Not Russetstar, Blackgaze or even Geckoleaf- whom she had recently became close to. Geckoleaf is afraid I’d leave her… but what would she do if she knew about me? She blames herself for the death of her patients she wasn’t able to save, but what about what I did? … Practically none of those were accidents.

But she simply shook her head, not wishing to worry herself with such things. Besides, she wasn’t planning on telling anyone, so she doubted there was much she had to fear, unsure how else any of her friends would find out about her. She knew Royalwatcher wouldn’t speak a word of it, but she wasn’t sure about Mistyeyes. She hadn’t seen him since she left the clan moons ago, but he had known about her secret training and had threatened her then.... Though this wasn’t about that, right now she was worried about Geckoleaf. She wasn’t sure if staying out on the territory was the best option for the medicine cat.

Mistfall’s ears flattened slightly once again as she noticed how her personal question had caused the medicine cat to wince. She was just about to open her maw in order to inform the other molly that she didn’t need to answer the question. Mist had asked without thinking ahead, saying the first thing that had popped into her head after the tabby had claimed that everyone leaves her. It was too insensitive of her to have questioned such a topic. But she closed her maw when the medicine cat began to speak. She was too curious to stop the molly.

As she listened to the story, she realized how different their parents were from each other, or rather it was the opposite. Her own mother had loved her and her litter-mates deeply, but she was blinded by her love for Boulderglare, and she never thought - even with evidence - that her mate could be so cold hearted, even going as far as to harm their kits. It wasn’t like Boulderglare had hated them from the start, but rather grew to hate them as they got older and he began to view them as weak and disappointments. But it seemed that Mistfall and Aspenmask got the worst of it. Stream never seemed to affect by him since she actually didn’t get the worse of it. Rock had ran away when they were really young, being the first to disappoint their father, though he was able to save himself from Boulderlgare in future moons. Aspenmask tried desperately to prove himself to their father, though of course in vain. And Mistfall just wanted to become strong - stronger than Boulderlgare, and stronger than any other clan cat… she wanted to be leader.

Suddenly, when Geckoleaf got to the part where her sister left her, Mistfall felt a slight pain in her chest. It felt like someone was pulling at her heart. Not just in empathy for her friend, but also thinking about her own sister. Her ears twitched slightly as she mentioned Cugarstorm, and Mist was reminded of Storm - her close friend since she was two moons old, whom she had never known had a crush on her, and it had broken his heart when she fell in love with a molly. Mistfall swallowed hard as she thought about these things.... Her former best friend and even her own sister. Both of whom she had left - she hoped that Stream was still in the clearing with her mate, and as for Storm, she couldn’t care less as long as he was somewhere he couldn’t threaten her clan. But… maybe Geckoleaf was right to question if I was going to leave her? I seem to be leaving everyone behind….

But she made a promise - not just to Geckoleaf before, but to herself now - that she wasn’t going to leave the medicine cat.

When the fiery tabby looked up at her with a dull gave, the grey warrior gave an understanding nod. She knew it was probably for the best to not get into the stories of all the patients that the molly had lost over her moons as medicine cat. Mistfall began to wonder if that was a huge part of the reasoning behind the mental breakdown that had taken place not that long ago, and was aware that it’s best not to push such a sensitive subject.

Mistfall gave a small smile i return to the weak one that Geckoleaf offered her. Though it seemed to falter when the other’s turned into a frown. The warrior became slightly uncomfortable as the medicine cat continued one to say that she had assumed the multi-colored molly would have been like the others in her life, and would leave just as they all had. It was mostly because she had never had someone actually rely on her like this. To actually come out and ask her to not leave them… it was so strange to be strongly needed like this, and even if she wasn’t use to it, it did feel good for someone like Geckoleaf to want her to stay. Until recently, Mist hadn’t cared much for friends. She had focused so much on becoming stronger when she was younger, the only friends she had made were Storm and Fallow. Even now, it wasn’t her focus, but she wasn’t as power-hungry as she had been when she was an apprentice. Instead, she had become wiser - but still wishes to one day fulfill her life-long dream.

The warrior’s pelt pricked when Geckoleaf returned to calling herself weak. This time she added that the clan also saw her in such a way. That she was a waste of space and fresh-kill, that her only purpose was to fix scratches. “That’s not true!” She suddenly snapped, her previous gentle tone seemed gone as she was upset with how the tabby saw herself. “Anyone with a brain would know how much you deserve their respect! Sure you ‘fix scratches’ but that’s your job - just like how hunting is mine. If we didn’t hunt we would starve, but if you didn’t heal then we could die a worse way… through sickness, infection, bleeding out - don’t you see how important you are? Not only that, but Starclan themselves come to you! Medicine cat’s are the link between the clans and our ancestors. Sure, there are a few cats that actually can see Starclan that aren’t in the medicine cat position, but they never get prophecies or are sent omens like you!” She lashed her tail. “No clan could survive without a medicine cat, especially one as knowledgeable and skilled as you. Hell, I don’t even know what an herb that isn’t cob-webs looks like!”

She began to calm down, but she wasn’t done yet. “And you should stop feeling that way. Like you’re a ‘waste of space’, because you aren’t. You only feel that way because everyone else in your life was blinded to who you really are. They all left you because they didn’t know better, and they didn’t know how amazing you could be… so you think the same way, right?” Mistfall hoped she wasn’t going the wrong way with this. She also hoped that bringing up the ones who have left the tabby wouldn’t hurt her. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Geckoleaf. “But they were wrong about you, and now you are wrong about you. You are a important part if the clans and respected by many of your clan-mates - but not only that, even the other clans respect medicine cats that are skilled in their ways like you are. So there’s no need to view yourself in such a way, alright?” Mistfall’s voice returned to it’s previous soft ton as she finished up.

Though it was not an easy trek, it was much preferable to the noise and pressure of the den, despite it's warmth. As she stepped, her paws sunk deep into the snow; the top layer of ice crunched quietly beneath her weight, lean as she was. Normally a rather thick-muscled she-cat, the lack of food and use had caused them to become atrophied. Her skin seemed to sag over her skeleton, loose and sagging. Despite this, she still moved in a semblance of her former grace, her stride shaking but purposefully. She glanced to her left, green eyes tracking her patrol companion for a moment. "So, Swampstone, how are you standing up to being practically starved and forcibly imprisoned?" she asked dryly, her humor lacking and rather cryptic. The novelty of being in the territory was far outweighed by her snippy, pessimistic mood; its seemed that no matter what happened, the winter would stretch on forever. With a deep sigh, she continued forward, each step through the deep snow laborious and miserable; her toes had already begun to become numb, and her oak brown fur was offset by the snow caked on her legs and underbelly. The weak sun that managed to drip through the ever-present clouds lit up the territory in a wan light, offering little contrast. It was white-washed, and threw off her depth perception; if anyone were to trespass, she wasn't sure running through the territory would be a good idea- any tree in the way would be near invisible.
Swampstone padded into the territory, the snow crunching somewhat loudly under his heavier weight. It was cold, and he was instantly sulky when he realized how deep it was. Walking is going to be a hassle today. A sigh echoed his thoughts, but the white puff of air caught his attention and he switched topics to think about. He took a moment to appreciate the small clouds when he breathed before they evaporated right in front of his eyes. As a kit, he used to try to shape the breaths, and though he had never succeeded in doing so he continued to try to do it for as long as the winter had been there. This was the first winter in which he hadn't tried once, a he was almost sad about it. Almost. He wasn't a kit anymore though, and now he was maybe going to have kits of his own.
Compared to Cloversplash, Swampstone seemed huge, but only because his fur was so fluffy. In fact, he actually looked a little bit bigger in the summer when he and the rest of the clan were well fed. Under his thick pelt, he was quite skinny. If he got wet, some cats would maybe mistake him for a WindClan cat.
He snapped out of his thoughts when Cloversplash spoke, his ears perking and turning slightly in her direction. This was one of his better days, and it only improved when he was set up to hunt with somebody he actually somewhat knew already opposed to one or two cats he didn't know at all. After a moment, he cleared his throat in order to reply; "Not much better than you, I suspose." It was a bit of a blunt thing to say, but that was classic Swampstone for you. "The lack of food this winter has been quite... what's an appropriate word? Unamusing? I don't enjoy being hungry all the time." His blue gaze was directed slighly ahead but mostly down to try to get the least glare that seemed to reflect off the bright white snow.
