But the awkward journey back was worth it as soon as she caught sight of Crowheart- and his single squirrel. Sure, it was a nice sized catch, but she had gotten two pieces of prey compared to his one! The molly quickly dropped her catch on the ground, swiping her tongue over her maw to get rid of any blood.
"Awe, Crow. Sorry there, looks like you've been beat," she teased, her light green eyes flashing playfully. "Better luck this time- and yes, it will take luck to beat me." Her muzzle was thrust into the air after this statement; she wasn't one to gloat, but around her best friend she was certainly more playful than her normal withdrawn self. She honestly believed that this was because with the tom, she was free to be herself. There was no need to be hiding anything, because he was in on her little secret. He was the only cat who knew, and while she had to keep it that way it was definitely refreshing to be around a cat who she didn't have anything to hide from. Her twinkling eyes focused back on her best friend as she waited for what she was sure would be a quick denial- that was the thing with this tom, he could never admit defeat. Not that she minded- it just meant more teasing for her. The tabby found it a bit amusing to push his buttons, especially because their friendship was always safe. No matter how far she pushed him, he would always love her and she would in return. That was simply how best friends were; they stuck together through thick and thin, closer than littermates even.

Crow was not happy.
It showed on the look on his face. His expression was of dissapointment, of anger, of the excuses he'd already thought up. "Well- you see-" For the first time in a very long time- since he'd met Mousenose, even- Crowheart was at a loss for words. He cleared his throat. What in StarClan is up with me today? It truly was a good question.
The tom tried again, doing his best to hide his embarrasment. "There's no definite reason for me losing. Too many possible factors." Better, but still not classic Crow. This was clearly not a good day for him.
StarClan, the violet-eyed tom had had a crush on Mouse since they'd met, but been too scared to make a move on her. Now it was too late. And because of that he had become more hidden, more reserved. Except around his "mate". There was no way he would allow her to see what he'd become.
After shifting his paws slightly, the tom chuckled a little at Mousenose's gloating. "Y' know, I never see you so energetic around other cats," he purred, trying to switch subjects. Crowheart hated the idea of losing.

Part of it was pride. He honestly didn't want to back down. And the other part was the bubbling anxiety - what if everyone started laughing at him, thinking he was a fool? What if Redpaw thought that? What if his warrior ceremony was delayed, because it was thought that he was incompetent? What if- stop that. Stop that now. Anyone who was close to Gannetpaw knew that he very much cared what others thought of him. It might be why he was so boastful. Why he threw off personal, verbal attacks with either a nonchalant "your call" manner, and then would ignore you for days afterwards, or would say nothing and just stare as though he couldn't believe you would say something like that. It explained why he had blown off his trip as a joke, because he wouldn't want to look like more of a fool then he already was.
Anxiety... caused his pride. Pushed it to the limits. It was something that Gannetpaw hated, he hated it more then anything else. Technically he almost hated himself. Waiting for something, anything to come out of the bushes and hopefully cause some excitement, the black and white feline thought he had never been more bored in his life. A light splash coming from the river made his ears pick up, but he was nervous to go investigate - just in case it was the sound of his companion catching something, and he distracted her. Never once did the thought that Redpaw might have had trouble in the river. A vole! A new sound caught the tom's attention. His ears picked up and he crouched down, getting ready to spring. This time, he wouldn't miss the vole. The two shrews he had caught were shrimpy and they wouldn't feed enough cats, no matter how optimistically Gannetpaw tried to look at it, in the end he came back to the same conclusion.
He wasn't an optimist anyways! He was a realist. And no matter how much he had tried to change that, to look at the world through positive eyes, all he saw was what it really was. Or at least - the most likely outcome of what it really was. The Clan wouldn't be able to support ShadowClan as well, and from what Gannetpaw had seen, not many of those apprentices were doing much hunting. For RiverClan, anyways. Whatever they caught was given to their own Clan and they took some of RiverClan's prey as well. Even if they seemed to hate the "stinky fish" they were generously offered. The black and white tom sprang, and his claws nicked the vole's hide this time - but it escaped. For the third time! Though that was only if this was the same vole, which was very highly doubtful. Still, Gannetpaw's frustration knew no boundaries.
"Mouse dung!" He snarled, tail lashing as the vole slipped away. It wouldn't get far. Swimming was a strong point of the tom's, and that, plus his frustration and overwhelming surge of desperation, combined to make the recklessness that had him leaping into the water. The vole was swimming away, a trail of crimson making it easy to track. Gannetpaw swiftly swam after it, the water swaying him off course and making it hard for him to keep on the vole, but eventually he caught up to the animal. It's injury, courtesy of the tom himself, had slown it down enough for Gannetpaw to catch the small rodent. And now his frustration had been taken out on the animal. A much messier kill then he had been planning, but at least now he had the vole after three missed attempts. Or maybe it hadn't been a single missed attempt!
Still, it was too close to not be considered a coincidence. This vole could feed two, or maybe even three cats! It was a big animal, much to Gannetpaw's surprise - yes, he had finally caught something that would be a worthy contribution to the Clan he loved so much! "Take that, you sneaky rodent!" He laughed with a smile on his maw. I really hope... things are going as good for Redpaw as they are for me. Gannetpaw thought as he went back to where the other two shrews were buried. This might be enough - it might be.
|
As though she was speaking in response to Gannetpaw's thoughts, Redpaw stomped down the side of the riverbed grumpily, her face contorted into an expression of anger. "Things are certainly not going good for me," the apprentice snarled lowly, her tail lashing behind her, scattering water about. "Oh, I pray to StarClan Gannetpaw is having better luck than me. Hmph. I wish Honeypool taught me more about hunting before I had to go out on this little trip to go catch prey... but it's fine. It's. Just. Wonderful." The calico she-cat dug her claws into the earth with each pawstep, dragging up mud and torn grass blades wherever she stepped. Amber eyes burned with a frustrated fury; Redpaw's heart blazed with the determination to make a mighty catch that the whole of RiverClan and ShadowClan would praise her for. Something so colossal she wouldn't be able to drag it back to the camp alone, requiring the help of another. Redpaw snickered to herself, scoffing.
Don't sweat it, Reddy, she thought, you'll get a catch. The carp getting away was just a one-time thing. As long as you don't let Gannetpaw know, there's nobody stopping you from catching a carp big enough to feed the elders for the whole day! Her whiskers twitched, delighted at the thought. Redpaw produced a purr. "Yes - that's it!" She beamed, her anger morphing from that into a newfound excitement to support her Clan to her fullest potential. "I'll do just that! And then... then, maybe I'll get my ceremony earlier than any other warrior in any of the Clans!" With a last purr, the calico feline dove headfirst into the waves again, her head bobbing at the surface.
Her maw was clenched in concentration as Redpaw dove beneath the water, her amber eyes wide and rounded as she scoured the river-bottom in search of a catch she could drag back. She'd traveled much farther down the river than she had thought, as the rocky floor was deeper than Redpaw had remembered. Alas, thoughts on that aside, her eyes settled on something still rather scrawny (albeit the apprentice had to admit, it was fatter than the fish she'd caught earlier!), though something that would definitely make for a proud catch. Of course, it wasn't everything her imagination had lived up to. The most Redpaw would likely get for a catch this size was possibly - just maybe - a "Great job!" from Gannetpaw.
...But that was enough to motivate her.
Redpaw resurfaced to breathe in quickly, though it was only for a split second, as within the next, she was swimming to the bottom of the riverbed, her claws unsheathed. She prayed that the fish - which was stupidly floating about in place, gills flashing at her - wouldn't dare look back. The calico apprentice, with a final push, dove forward with enough force to pin the carp against the floor with a single foreleg. The carp, alarmed at Redpaw's sudden touch, flailed about aggressively, nearly making the apprentice allow it to slip out from beneath her paw.
Oh no you don't! Redpaw wailed silently, slowly feeling her lungs growing tighter and tighter. She would only have limited time until she needed to resurface for air, and Redpaw was more than determined to not let go of the carp lest it be for her to bury it and return to her catch later. She squeezed her claws into its sides, making the scaly thing thrash about beneath her grip even harder. Gritting her teeth with her maw still clamped shut, Redpaw used her other foreleg to impale the carp, stunning it for a moment as she buried her face into a spot just behind the neck, biting with all the strength she could find.
Water flooded into her mouth as the fish slowly lost its passion to fight. Redpaw recoiled from the thing, hooking it on her claws as she pushed off of the ground with her hind legs, freeing her head from the waves. She coughed and sputtered out water, though Redpaw's main priority was getting this rather tricky (and very, very messy) catch of a carp onto land. She ensured her claws were safely hooked around a secure pair of mud-colored scales, using her legs to propel her in the direction of land. Redpaw kept her muzzle above the water, pointed at the sky, though every so often she would glance down to see if the carp was still within her grasp. Seconds later, Redpaw had dragged both herself and the fish onto the grass where it laid limp beside her, the bites and clawmarks where the apprentice had struck notable.
Lungs still faintly filled with liquid, Redpaw let out a loud exhale before breaking into a coughing fit. It wouldn't be anything serious, she hoped, as it was nothing more than a bit of water that had went down the wrong way. Her amber eyes affixed onto the scrawny thing, though a grin of pride was visible on her maw. Soaked and laying on the grass, Redpaw reached over to press at the sturdy scales with a foreclaw. The carp, dead, made no reaction to her touch as she gave a throaty purr to herself, quietly exclaiming, "Gotcha!"

After shifting his paws slightly, the tom chuckled a little at Mousenose's gloating. "Y' know, I never see you so energetic around other cats," he purred, trying to switch subjects. Crowheart hated the idea of losing.
|
"Oh, really?" Mousenose questioned, eyes glittering with amusement. "I can think of a reason! You lost because you were up against me; there's simply no match for the wondrous Mouse!" She put on a fake accent for her last accent, purposely becoming a bit more goofy. Her accent made her sound posh and fancy; both things she was not. Picking her prey back up, the molly moved over to Crowheart and dropped them down beside him. "If it makes you feel better, you still get to carry the majority of it home. You know my sis and her thoughts; mollies shouldn't be doing a lot of work. So we'll make it look like you made the bigger catch." She rolled her eyes, obviously frustrated by Tinyfuzz's opinions, but it wasn't like she had ever tried to change them. No, as soon as she noticed what her role model thought, she changed herself to act accordingly. That was the whole reason the two of them had to have this whole 'mate' act going on; to Tinyfuzz and her mate's family, Mousenose's kind was an abomination. Mouse could feel her eyes shimmer, giving away her sad thoughts, before she quickly pushed them away and put on a small smile. She was with her best friend, where she was free to be herself. She wouldn't allow any sadness right now.
"I'm not this energetic around other cats," the she-cat agreed with a laugh. "Only around you. I mean, I'm not myself around anyone other than you. I can't afford to be." A brief moment of silence fell over Mousenose when she stared down at the ground, tail swishing gently behind her before she turned her pale green eyes back on Crowheart. "Thank you for that," she murmured softly. It wasn't like she hadn't thanked her best friend before; she had, and multiple times. It was just that she always felt like she'd never be able to repay him for all he had done for her. He made her life right now possible; otherwise, she wouldn't be able to keep up this act. And if she didn't go with this act, then Tinyfuzz would surely turn her back on Mousenose. The molly knew a true sibling shouldn't do that, that they should love you no matter what, but she couldn't help but want to keep her sister even if she wouldn't be free to be herself. She simply had always looked up to her older sister; she couldn't imagine not having the molly to converse with. Because of Crow, she still could, and she would always be thankful to him for it. The brown and cream warrior pressed her muzzle up against the tom's, a gesture to show how happy she was to have him. "You really are the bestest best friend ever, you know?" Then, a mere moment later she pulled back, a small purr emitting from her throat. Raising a paw and playfully batting the black tom's shoulder, she turned her attention back to the unfamiliar territory around them. "So, what would you like to do now? I personally don't feel like going back to that crowded camp soon." Plus, she didn't want Crow to return when he had left in such a bad mood. She wanted to give her friend more time to relax and enjoy himself.

When he brought the vole over with the shrews, a sudden idea came to the two-toned cat. Why didn't he take the vole over to Redpaw and show her what a real catch looked like? Yes, that would be a great idea. Picking up the vole, who wasn't too much worse for wear, despite the cut that Gannetpaw had given him, and the somewhat messy killing strike, Gannetpaw headed over towards the she cat. "Hey Redpaw, guess what I finally caugh-" The words died on his lips as he reached the spot where the she cat was. And next to her was a carp. The silvery fish looked like it had put up a fight, by the cuts on it's body, either that or Redpaw hadn't had much success delivering a killing blow - but it was huge!
The vole looked smaller in comparison, and the tom padded up towards it, circling the aquatic creature with an amazed look on his features. "Whoa." Was all that he managed to get out, as he gave the carp a look of satisfaction and an impressed glance in Redpaw's direction. He hadn't been expecting that! True, his voice had been muffled, but it was pretty obvious from his tone how impressed he was. Dropping the vole, the tom gave it a light nudge and then glanced up at his hunting companion. "How'd you catch that?" He asked, quite obviously wanting to hear her tale of success. For two apprentices, this hadn't been too shabby at all! But then again, Gannetpaw thought, we aren't as WORTHLESS as SOME cats think we are. It was a proud thought, and one that he tended to think quite often whenever an apprentice did something 'cool.' Russetstar himself had been an apprentice once! So had Geckoleaf, and Juniperpaw? She was still an apprentice! And they were all amazing, but they had had to learn. Not all cats were born with natural talents. As much pride as Gannetpaw himself had, and as much as he liked to boast sometimes, he knew that even his talents weren't natural. The tom flicked some water off of his tail, wrinkling his muzzle as he still felt as though he didn't even have any fur now. For a cat with a short pelt, like the tom, swimming was pretty much a way to feel like he had no fur.
See, with a shorter pelt, when Gannetpaw swam his fur would stick to his sides. It made him more streamlined, and it was easier to go faster, but he payed for it later. Honestly, the tom would have preferred not being as good of a swimmer and having a thicker pelt, even if that meant he would be drenched through later. "Are you okay, though? You look a little... umm... sick, maybe?" A frown flickered through the young cat's face as he gave Redpaw a second look. Yeah, she did look a little sickish, though he supposed that was probably just from trying too hard to get the carp. Maybe she was just tired. He was a little tired after the ordeal with the vole, and he was choosing to believe that it was the same one - coincidence, seeing three voles in a day in the same area? More like impossible. Two, maybe, but either way, this was one of the ones he had missed. And besides that, it looked vaguely the same size as the one he had missed before. Not the one he had tried to pounce on.
The tom sat down and craned his neck around, using his rough pink tongue to get the water out of his pelt. It wouldn't dry for a while, which would be irritating enough in itself without having to wait even longer to at least clean it. Not that Gannetpaw was particuarly vain, but he did feel a little uncomfortable with it. Despite the fact that swimming might not be his favorite thing, he could deal with it and he wouldn't have traded living in RiverClan for anything. He loved his Clan. And, he liked the cats who lived here - most of them, at least. Most were very friendly and kind towards him. It was nice to have cats who were so friendly around, especially because the ones that weren't weren't liked in general by the cats in the Clan. Gannetpaw had made up his mind, from a young age, to live his life so that cats would feel annoyed and affectionate towards him.
Why annoyed? Well, part of him liked to annoy other cats. He liked to watch their reactions to his comments, at least. And so, he had decided to live his life in a way that would make them both. So that he would be liked, but also somewhat bothersome at the same time. It was a delicate balance and there were very fine lines drawn that you had to be careful not to cross. Gannetpaw had learned what things were sensitive to some cats, and he didn't travel near basic sensitive areas.
Past traumatic experiences, stuff like that. That would cross the line from annoying to insensitive, and honestly, that just wasn't really in his true nature. He had a good heart - a kind soul. Not an insensitive one. He awaited Redpaw's response, eyes still twinkling as he remembered the catch with the vole. That had been amazing! And, he hadn't thought he would make it. But he had, and he was quite proud of himself for doing so.

Crowhawk purred in amusement as he stood over his mate with a purr. "You can do nothing but plead for your life." He told her with a playful growl. He enjoyed this. No Riverclan staring at him, no feeling uncomfortable. Just him and his mate having fun. It felt like he was in his territory and it hasn't even been flooded. It just felt normal when he was with Blackfrost. Nothing could drown the kit out of him and his love for his mate. "Well, I am feeling hungry right now. You look like a good lunch to me." He said playfully biting her paw.

It just felt normal when he was with Blackfrost. Nothing could drown the kit out of him and his love for his mate. "Well, I am feeling hungry right now. You look like a good lunch to me." He said playfully biting her paw.

Blackfrost smiled up at her mate, the warrior’s muzzle feeling warm with a blush as he stood over her. “Oh, is that my ticket to safety?” She mewed, acting all innocent and naive as he playfully growled down at her, claiming that she needed to plead for her life. “Please let me go, Mr. Badger. I am much too young and fragile to get eaten... I have a handsome mate at home that’s probably worried sick about me by now..” A small giggle escaped her towards the end of her teasingly pleading words. “I don’t taste that good, trust me on that..” She quietly whimpered, her tail twitching underneath her in the green grass, uttering a small squeak of surprise when he gently bit down on her paw, “I bet there are plenty of she-cats out here worth your time, not little ol’ me..” Blackfrost murmured, blinking up at him with kitten-like eyes, her ears twitching slightly. Everything about this made her whole face feel warm and her stomach fill with butterflies.

Furzeberry knew that Birdsong wasn't alright, so he silently followed leaving some distance.

Furzeberry blinked in confusing and carefully crept into the vines and peered to see what she was doing.
