Keeping her pawsteps light and her tail low, she wandered for a moment before her paws started to carry her closer to the Thunderclan border. There was groves of beech trees not far from there where nuts would sometimes temp prey out for a small meal. Goldenstar had showed it to her not long after she had started training. She couldn't help but think of the battle that had gone on in Thunderclan. Nightpaw hadn't been there since Goldenstar had only taken warriors. She had been secretly grateful for that. The first battle Nightpaw had been a part of had been an ambush by the Dusk syndicate, and she had had no fighting training and had been caught completely off guard. Her fighting skills had improved since then, thanks to Goldenstar along with some lessons from Daydream. But even so, she didn't like it. It was something she'd do if she had to. The fighting part of the assessment was what worried her. Hunting? That was easier. As she arrived in the grove, she crept silently into the shadow of a tall tree, her black pelt helping her blend into the dark space, and she waited with her ears perks and her mouth open as she waited to scent or hear something.

Goldenstar watched Nightpaw, treading through the shadows after her. He was proud of her for making it this far, but there was still a list of things that she needed to do before she became a warrior. Nonetheless, she was nailing most of the things he saw as important. He was tempted to surprise her now with the battle assesment, everything was still. However, that would probably scare off all of the prey in the area, something that wouldn’t help when it came to the hunting assesment. Hunting, then battle, he told himself, forcusing on watching the apprentince again, waiting to see what she did and how she did it.

Nightpaw's ears perked up as she heard the fluttering of wings. A bird with bright blue feathers fluttered and landed on the forest floor, just to the side of a tree maybe twenty tail lengths away. It began to peck at the floor of needles trying to get at the earth beneath. Nightpaw made her move move, creeping as quietly as a Shadow as she kept in the shade of the beeches. Paws light, tail just high enough not to drag, stay low, and birds hear and see better than they scent, she repeated to herself as she stalked. Don't chase it. Get close enough to pounce. That one had been hard. Even now, all of her instincts demanded she charge after the bird. But she crept, swiftly but patiently. As she began to close in, she froze as she noticed her paw hovering over a twig. Gingerly, she stepped over it. Finally, she was close enough. She sprang from the shadows and pinned the bird, delivering a swift bite to its neck before it could do more than let out a feeble tweet. And give thanks to Starclan, she repeated to herself, for the life, and ...oh mousedung, what were the words? Thank you for its life, and how it will feed my clan. That sounded close enough. As she scraped the needles over the bird, she couldn't help but smile to herself as she thought about how she'd called it her clan. She supposed that made it official. She was home.

The loner turned around, his ears flicking as he spotted the she. "Mouse-Dung!" He cursed, glancing around for a exit. The tom glanced at a tree, then to a grass patch, he began to slither toward the grass patch. His went pure silent as his black pelt brushed a branch, making needles fall onto the ground.

Goldenstar watched the apprentince in silence. He couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in Nightpaw’s head, though it was most likely the stuff he had taught her, hopefully anyways. Was she getting training from the Dark Forest? The thought crossed his mind. However, he had never seen her with injuries that hadn’t accidentally been caused by something that they did in training. Watching her, he smiled as she stalked the bird, but forced himself to be quiet and not congratulate her. That could come later. Once she had caught the bird, he waited a few moments, before padding out. “Good job,” he said, looking at the bird. “Ready for the battling part?” he asked, before adding, “Claws sheathed,” not wanting to get scratched.

Nightpaw's tail flew up in surprise to hear her mentor so close all of a sudden. She turned around and looked at him with a smile, figuring she must have passed the hunting portion of the assessment. Now was the hard part. "Yes, Goldenstar." She look a quick look around, and flicked her nicked ear curiously. "Where?"

Goldenstar tried not to laugh as Nightpaw noticed he was there, not having meant to have startled the apprentince. Looking at the bird, then back at Nightpaw, he started to think of what he would test her on in the battle part of the test. “There’s a clearing not too far from here, follow me,” He said, flicking his tail to indicate where he would be walking, now padding in the direction of the clearing.

Nightpaw nodded and scooped one last pawful of needles onto the bird before trotting after her mentor. Claws sheathed, but don't hold back. Aim for where he's going, not where he is. Don't attack head on, fake to the side. She repeated the lessons Goldenstar and Daydream had taught her in her head, trying to keep herself calm. Any take a deep breath. It's going to be ok. Another lesson from, Daydream, but not one specifically for fighting. Still, she tried to assure herself that it would be ok.

Goldenstar turned around once they were both in the clearing, and lunged ay Nightpaw. He kept his claws sheathed, he couldn’t hurt Nightpaw. He aimed for her stomach, a place that most cats usally went for. He hadn’t exactly felt the best since the battle, but this was a good way to stretch, and get some fresh air. Sure, the memories of battle hurt, but he told himself he would have to leave them behind at one point or another. Now he was trying to stretch for Nightpaw’s stomach, trying to claw at it with his sheathed paws.

The two weren't in the clearing or more than a moment when all of a sudden, Goldenstar whirl on Nightpaw and aimed for her stomach, institutionally, she reared up on her hind paws, avoiding his grazing paw by no more than a whisker's width. The test was starting now, it seemed. Her mind reeled as she grappled for for what to do in the situation. She was starting off the fight on the defensive. The only thing she could manage to do in her surprise was back up and crouch, putting space between then while still facing Goldenstar and lowering her body to make herself harder to knock prone.

Goldenstar tried not to say something to Nightpaw as she avoided him. That could be saved for after their mini battle. First it would be defense, and he would see how long it would take her until she got back into the offensive. Then they would go from there. Now he would try to hit her again, his eyes narrowed, trying to focus on Nightpaw, trying to hit her, though he got off on the wrong paw, staggering ever so slightly before once again lunging at Nightpaw, trying to pin her down.
