HickoryClan

A Clan situated in an old mixed forest with a diverse array of towering trees, including shagbark hickory that rain down nuts in early Leaf-Fall. The hickory nuts attract prey in droves; including their favourite grey squirrels, making Leaf-Fall a particularly abundant season. HickoryClan cats pride themselves on their incredible manoeuvrability and grace not only among the branches but in deliberation as well. They are a clan of honour and goodwill to others and former leaders have been noted to be eloquent and polite at gatherings, even with foul parties attending. They are enemies to very few, and so have remained undisturbed in their woods. This includes their customs, which while most remain old and formal, others have developed to be a little more eccentric.

HickoryClan Camp
HickoryClan’s camp is comprised of a round clearing in the forest made by the overarching branches of a gigantic, old hickory tree. The tree is said to have began life as three that grew intertwined and inosculate with age, which made the branches irregular and gnarled in places, but also left a large hollow through the center. Queens and their kits take shelter in the hollow base of the trunk where it’s safest, the entrance hidden among the tangled roots. The Leader lives in a woodpecker cavity higher up, long vacated by any living birds.
The clearing is surrounded on all sides by thick masses of black raspberry, the prickling thorns warding off larger animals from wandering through the camp. Watching the squirrels in their territory gave the cats the idea for their apprentices and warriors dens: dreys of twigs and thickly packed leaves dot the brambles, relatively waterproof and easily remade if broken. The only drawback is size, as a drey den only holds about three grown cats each, so there are many scattered around the perimeter of camp.
The only exception to the tree or bramble dens are the Medicine Cat and Elders, who have large dens under either side of a rocky outcrop at the high end of the clearing, their scent masked by the minty aroma of creeping snowberry that grows draping over the rock.

Customs & Celebrations
HickoryClan follows the rules of the warrior code.
They however, believe the souls of the departed are in the soil and plants around them, rather than in the stars and StarClan. The phrase “they have returned” is used in change of “they’re in StarClan”. A grieving cat may find themselves going back to a certain flower or tree they may distinguish as their loved one. Their version of the Place of No Stars is called the Vast Expanse, a place with no plants or prey, lost in a fog forever.

Sometimes life in the forest, a fair distance from other clans, life can get a little boring. Celebrations keep things interesting and moral high.

---- At a certain time in Greenleaf usually decided by the Medicine Cat with a dream, the cats give trinkets to those they like- whether friends, family or significant others. The trinkets range from interesting pebbles, to flowers, feathers and even occasionally twolegs’ coins or nick-knacks. Naughty cats have also used the holiday to give mouse-bile wrapped in sweet-scented leaves to those they dislike, though that’s not traditional!

---- On the longest night of Leaf-Bare, the adults in the clan hunt for two days prior but bury most of the prey in a secret location away from camp. One of the warriors is elected to cover themselves in evergreen branches and sneak through camp at night, bringing in the prey and piling it high in the center of the clearing. At dawn the very hungry clan wakes up to a feast, and the kits try to guess who’s hidden under the evergreen. (Food is still given to Queens and Elders)
