The apprentice shrunk back as Twilightstar called her name, ears flattening sadly against her head. Gone through a few mentors...? She made it seem like it was all Yewpaw's fault. Maybe it was. Either way, this made it official. Coldsong was gone. She didn't even register the name of her new mentor and just about leapt out of her skin as the long-legged, big-eared moon man popped into view. What was he even saying? The moon?

"Ah- Don't.. get your hopes up for me," she replied with a sigh. She shook her head. He was familiar - really, he was a spectacle hard to miss around the clan - but his name alluded her, "I'm sorry, what was your name again?'

Oddear resisted every urge to smother the sad little Molly in his overly long arms. He gently bumped the top of his snout under her own, "Chin up, my dear! If I can bare the venom of our medicine man, I assure you that your apprenticeship will flourish in my paws like the bloom petals of the white lily flower!" Elegant words fell from his lips as smoothly as honey dripped from a hive.

Oddear wasted no time! In a matter of moments, he had turned on his slim paws and began to march out of camp. Tbe tall Tom was usually hunched but with a pep in his step, he seemed to loom over this clanmates like a beacon of sunlight. "No time to waste, my dear! The world doesn't stop, nor shall we!" He purred over his shoulder to her, leading the way to the moor.

Was this really her new mentor? Or was Twilightstar just playing some cruel joke on her? She kept getting lost in the winding, extravagant way he talked, and moved, and existed. With her luck, he would be gone in the next moon - perhaps run away with his 'medicine man'? - and she would once again be stuck in her apprenticeship with no mentor. Yewpaw let out a squeak as began marching away and scrambled to her paws. How did he move so fast with legs that long? Surely he would trip over himself?

"Wait up!" she called, jogging after him. No time to think or mope when you're trying to keep up with the strange moon man.

"To feel the wind on your fur, the breeze running over your body like a rabbit thumping through the moor.... fantastical!" His mind perked to the idea of rabbits. Hunting! Yes oh, yes. He paused only briefly, giving bed a chance to catch up but when he peered over his shoulder at her, there was a twinkle of wholesome chaos in his eyes.

In a flash of cream and brown fur, the long legged man was off! Oddear flew across the ground, bounding ahead as his paws slammed into the firm soil of the moor. He was like a rocket, shooting off.

"Hunting yes yes!" he called out, voice carried back to the apprentice who was no doubt behind him, "You can go your whole life without catching a single claw in your pelt but a cat needs to eat, it's the will of the Moon, the cycle of the stars!" He clambered up to a high rock, standing like a malnourished statue, keeper of the plains. "We take from the earth, for our food, and our bodies when we die go back into it... But tell me, my dear, What do you think happens?" He turned to face her, droopy ears pressed against his head by the rushing winds that flew in from the sea. A pure curious look, one a kit might have, cross his soft expression.

Oddear's words completely dumbfounded the apprentice from time to time but there was something utterly enthralling about his being that left you hanging onto them for dear life. Yewpaw stuttered as he suddenly dashed off, long legs propelling him faster than hers ever could, but she remembered Coldsong's training. He may be gone but his words were not. 'Don't stop to think, Yew, just be quick.' she thought. And she was off, paws pounding against the ground and heartbeat pounding in her ears as the world flashed by. She couldn't help but laugh - the exhilaration going straight to her head. Oddear had pulled far ahead but she skittered to a stop as he bounded up a stone, looking oddly statuesque as the sunlight framed his lithe form.

Yewpaw was breathing hard but his questions brought her mind down from the high. What happens? "What happens when?" she shot back, her words unintentionally sharp as she struggled to regain her breath, "When we die?" What kind of a question was that? Not that it wasn't something she had thought about, but why ask it now?

"I... I used to think we go to StarClan. I used to think StarClan ran everything. They planned your life out - all the good things. I was so sure..." She let out a heavy sigh. Now she was faced with two options - either StarClan was more malicious than they were taught, or they weren't so all-mighty. Perhaps three? Maybe they just didn't exist at all?

He listened to her with a small quirk of his large overly long head. The air around her was melancholy, almost morbid in a sense. His heart ached to take away the hidden pain of the young apprentice, pull her close and tell her it was going to be alright.
Maybe he could later over a spot of lunch!

"My dear, that was in the past. That's what you used to think, what do you think now? What ideals float around in your mind and morph the way the world communicates with your spirit?' he hummed his words, climbing down from the jagged rock he had come to stand upon. Couldn't catch any rabbits up here!

Once on the ground, his nose was a master at picking up the scent of rabbits. They ran and dug and scratched and fought all underneath the very ground their paws stood upon. Even with the grass flailing about - as much as his heart did whenever he saw those familiar amber eyes - he could see the movement of the rabbit, the small white tail as it protrudes from the thin, dry bracken.

Luckily for them, the rock shielded them from the winds currents, their scents staying put with them.

What she thought now? "I... I don't know what I think now. I haven't taken the time to consider anything different." She had already learned that when Oddear was one the move, it was best to go ahead and follow - so when he hopped down from his jagged perch, she shuffled over next to him. Her previous experiences with hunting had been... less than ideal with Breezefeather's lack of patience and ability to teach and she still wasn't entirely sure how to do it right. Hopefully Oddear would have something to offer.
