I personally think the idea to not need to breath might be fun especially if your in rc. Dive as much as you want cant be buried alive, lots of possibilities especially in those tunnels  .
Ooooooor shadow walking could be fun teleport as long as shadows are connected and no one can hit you if you are in the dark.

The real question here is what level of intensity you want/need, along with what the nature of the character is and why they have this power in the first place. For example: You wanted a medium-low level power and a character that strives to/ needs to empathize with others in order for character development to occur, you could make it so that they have a Jayfeather-like power where said character can feel/see other cat's emotions and memories. I'm not sure what kind of character you need, so I can't really help you. Just list a few ideas that you have in mind and I can then cater more to your needs

I’d say that the cat is a class clown type, and can never really get taken seriously. I think that the power could be a way for the cat to get taken seriously for once - it could be a great plot device/idea! I’d suggest a good sense of smell, so they can get fox/badger scent and prevent a possible attack!
I’ll just say, use it realistically. Try not to do anything psychic.
As for history, don’t do anything like ‘abandoned’ or ‘has terrible childhood’. Those are cliche. Have a normal kithood for once, with kind of protective, yet loving parents.
