Peya sighed. "I can't just stay here doing nothing," he said, his clenched teeth glinting in the moonlight. "If the most powerful person in Creepytown is the mayor, then I'm going after the mayor. I don't even know where Ori is right now-- probably still in the outskirts of town." His eyes met his sister's imploringly. "I just want to survive. If that means me against the world... I don't know. It's instinct. I'm not a hero kind of guy." He studied the ground.

"Yes, you are," said the voice of a young boy behind them. "I can't count how many times you've saved Zen and me during our travels." Peya turned to see Orion standing a few feet away, looking tired and gaunt. His nose was red as if he had been crying.

"Kid!" Peya couldn't hide his grin. "How'd you get in here?" He looked at him more closely. "Are you ok?"

"It's a long story." Ori shut his eyes and then opened them. "Who's this?"

"Oh, you haven't been introduced!" Again, Peya's smile widened. "This is my sister. Sage."

"I never knew you had a sister," said Orion shyly. Sage was beautiful; enough to put any boy-- except, apparently, the flirty Peya-- off balance. "How long have you been in Creepytown?" He addressed her.

"100 years" She said honostly. "Anyone here never ages." She said She looked at Orion "You ok?" she asked kindly.

The creature looked at Zen. Me. Check. It wanted to see if it could find Peya and Orion for Zen.

Zen was torn. She knew it would be great to have another friend searching for them, but she couldn't stop her selfish instinct for the company from competing. She was well aware that she was nowhere near altruistic. "If you want," she said at last. "I'm sure they would love to see you." Well, she wasn't so sure about that part.

"I really appreciate the offer," she said, at last, being truly sincere. It had been a long time since she'd been in a town that harbored real friends for her. "I just wish I could go with you." People kept leaving-- Peya, Orion, Luz, Noface... and now even the creature.

But she wasn't a stranger to solitude.

Turning her attention back towards Eve before the fox left, she asked, "And you. What are you planning to do?"

"Yeah." His answer was vague and elusive, but he hoped they didn't press. "Zen got stuck outside just before night fell. She can't come into town." The fewer details, the better.

Something about her answer hit a funny spot with him. "So if you're... what, a hundred and eighteen? Then how old are you, Peya?" He'd always assumed Zen's friend was somewhere in his early twenties, but maybe he was wrong. "And Sage. Why didn't you ever leave?" His face grew paler. "Or... could you?"

Peya's mouth twisted into a wry smile. "Older than I look, huh? Blixes grow slowly-- not that they have an extended lifespan, per se, but I've been going through adolescence for almost a hundred years. Maybe that's why I'm always flirting, never dating, eh?" He grinned as Ori scowled; he knew how much the boy hated it when Peya flirted with Zen.

"All those years and still no maturity," Orion retorted. "But you are right about one thing. I think we should go to the mayor. He's our best chance of getting out of here."

"Good luck to you." Zen tried to keep the bitterness out of her voice but failed miserably. Suddenly, she couldn't help it anymore. "Don't you ever get tired of doing that? Why do you like trapping people in town so much?" She blurted.

"I had the chance but I didn't..." She said "I chose to stay here when I was offered a way out..." She said clutching her other arm shyly.

Trying to keep down the anger that threatened to harden her, she shook her head. "OK, I get it. I'm sorry. I'm just... stressed right now, I guess. I believe you would leave if you could." She looked at her. "If we do succeed with the mayor... would you?"

Turning to the fox, she resisted the urge to reach out and stroke it. "If you're going to go, you'd better do it quickly," she added brusquely. "And..." She bit her lip. "Go in peace."

The sun cracked over the horizon, and in a few moments her shadows dissolved and she was human again, her dark skin aglow with the early morning light.
