"I don't know why," Peya said, shaking his head. "This place is nuts. I wanted to leave the moment I got here." Just then, a small, wet nose bumped his ankle. "Luz!" cried Orion before Peya could say anything. He scooped the little porker into his arms and cuddled it fiercely. "What's this?" he added, pulling the papery parchment out from underneath his collar. "Zen sent a message!

"And this confirms it," he continued, scanning the note. His face hardened. "We're going to the mayor."

Peya opened his mouth to respond but Orion suddenly collapsed, coughing. The older boy paled and bent down to help him up, but Orion only hacked harder. "What's wrong with him?" he demanded of Sage.

Sage bent down and felt his forehead. "A bit hot..." she said "Orion. How do you feel?" she asked telling the animals who started forming around to translate.

The creature felt Zen’s loneliness, and felt something. It pushed the thought away, and sat in Zen’s lap. It wasn’t going anywhere now.

Orion's eyes flicked open, his face slick with sweat. "I'm sorry," he apologized, trying to stand. "It's nothing. I think I'm just tired."

"No, you are not," Peya insisted, pulling him back down. So much for his selfish instincts. "What's going on?"

Orion sighed, unable to avoid it. "I think it's the Halloween atmosphere. I'm connected to the light, and all this darkness..." He shuddered. "It's suffocating me."

Peya turned to Sage grimly. "We need to hurry." Orion couldn't' last more than a few days like this, and his own Zaniblix impulses were heightened in this place. "We need to go now." Time was of the essence.

"Thank you," murmured Zen in surprise. The fox's light body fit perfectly in her lap, and a strange sensation settled over her. For some reason, this position was familiar.

"Well. I don't think that's it." She said "Here take this." She said breaking a piece off of the gem on her amulet. "It'll keep you from doing that." Sage said standing up.

The creature looked at Zen. The blue in it’s neon-colored eyes looked more intense, like blue flames trying to hold it back. It was the same as the barrier in it’s mind. It was painful, but the creature fought against it to comfort Zen. In it’s mind, this action was the creature trying to make up for something. Perhaps some past mistake.

"Thanks," said Orion in surprise. Just holding the stone revived him somewhat. "Now. Which way to the mayor's house?" It certainly took a lot to destroy the youngster's confidence. "I wanna get started right away!"

Again, Zens sensed the fox's intensity. She squeezed her eyes shut. "We'll get to the bottom of this. I know it." Pausing, a thought occurred to her. "Maybe the mayor could help...?"

For now, though, it was time to sleep. Bowing her head over her chest, she slumped, until the exhausted girl was asleep and snoring softly, the watchful vulpine creature sitting silently on her lap.
