Keys clinking in the distance
Listen,
Can you hear,
those keys clinking in the distance.
They give me hope,
It makes sense that you wouldn’t understand.
But yet you listen.
I know it doesn’t seem important or significant,
But I tell you,
It is.
So listen.
It’s calming right?
It’s coming around the corner.
It’s the neighbors,
They are going in their house.
I wish it was who I thought it was.
But they may never come back.
The clinking stops.
I feel completely alone.
No one to confort or talk to me.
Completely isolated.
Wait,
I hear more clinking,
Can you hear it?
It’s coming around the corner.
Its only a little girl with a pink, fluffy backpack,
It’s joyful jingle ringing through the hot, summer air,
But it’s still not who I had hoped it was.
The girl ran to her parents.
The jingle stopped.
They drove away.
Alone, and more scared than before.
They will never come back, will they?
The person that promised to return.
I promised to wait.
And wait I will.
Do you hear that?
Where is it coming from?
It’s not from the corner, or even outside.
I hear it, don’t you?
Listen.
It’s coming from the front door, but,
I can’t see who it is.
It’s the right tone of clinking keys.
It won’t be him. I tell myself.
But I go to the door anyway.
Unable to extinguish my hopes.
I hear a voice, don’t you?
It says, “I hope she waited”.
And I know,
He is here.
The one I waited for.
I reply.
“I hope he returned?”
The door flies open
And I am embraced gently.
This is what I was waiting for.
And I am comforted once more.
