A Lonely Walk... (OPEN)

Soybean walked carefully, scenting for prey. He smelled a shrew and began to creep towards it, careful not to make a sound. Suddenly his back leg got caught in a thorn and he landed flat on his face. ‘Fox dung!’ He stood up and shook himself off. ”Well....There goes breakfast,” He sighed. “I'll just hunt later. He continued walking, smiling as he heard a bird singing. ‘Wonder if I’ll see any other cats.’ He stopped. ‘I'm not close to their den, am I?’ He scented the air around him. The was no sign of his family. ‘Good. I'm safe...for now.’ Soybean sat down, enjoying the sun on his pelt.

Lion whirled around at the sound of a cat's voice, his golden paw finding its way to the back of a shrew. Claws now unsheathed, he granted the thing a quick death before grabbing with his teeth and walking through the bushes. Any cat that might've been there had left, but their scent was still fresh enough to follow. Eventually, Lion found a cat basking in the sun. With the peaceful chirping of nearby birds, the other cat didn't seem very dangerous. "Hello," the golden tom greeted after setting the shrew down, "Is this your shrew that I caught?"

Soybean started slightly at the sound of another cat's voice. Luckily they had come up on his left side, so he didn't have to turn much to be able to see them. Taking a quick glance, he could see that the golden cat was not part of his family. He relaxed slightly. “I was going to catch it, but I was able to catch a mouse before it. You can have it,” he replied. He was still wary, but he figured he should be friendly. “Is this your territory? I'll leave if it is.” He got up and turned to face the cat head-on. His leg gave him a bit of trouble, so it took him a second to stand. He got a better look at the cat standing before them. They didn't seem hostile, but you could never tell by looks. ‘I should be careful. Anyone could lie as easily as my family.’ He winced as he caught sight of his back leg; no doubt the other cat would mention it. ”What's your name?” He asked.

"Nah, you can stay," the golden cat responded with a dismissive flick of his tail. "I don't mind sharing territory," he continued nonchalantly, "There's more than enough prey here for both of us and how would I make friends if I spent all my time chasing everyone away, eh?" He eyed the other cat as he stood, watching him closely since the tom seemed to have trouble standing. "My name is Lion. What's yours?" The other cat didn't seem unfriendly to him. He'd responded to the questions and was even about to leave had Lion not stopped him. @FireSandwich

Soybean began to relax again. ‘Lion seems friendly enough... I'll trust him for now.’ ”Lion's a cool name,” he said, sitting back down. He was still unsteady on his feet. “My name is Soybean.” He looked at Lion with curiosity. “Where are you from?” He asked. “That is, if you don't mind me asking.” His ears twitched worriedly. ‘Ack...I've never really had a friend before...I might have just messed that up.’

"Thanks!" Lion replied happily when Soybean complimented on his name. He thought so, too, but not all cats agreed. Apparently, some believed that being as animals was overrated. "Soybean's an interesting name," Lion grinned. Isn't it a type of plant? the golden tom thought to himself.

Lion took a second to think about the next question. "I'm not sure," he admitted hesitantly. "If you mean where I was born, then I was found in a barn. I'm not sure where my parents are from. But if you mean where I live, then I've always been a forest cat." @FireSandwich

Soybean smiled. “No problem,” he replied. It was weird that Lion said he was found in a barn, not born in one. Whatever. It's not my place to address. He thought. ”Well, I should tell you about myself, I guess,” Soybean said, standing up. He turned, showing Lion his back left leg. It was amputated at the joint. “I got this when my leg got crushed in between two rocks. It was during a storm, and my sister left me to die....But not before clawing my right eye out.” He paused for a moment, considering. “You might want to sit down, this is a long story.” Soybean said. “Where was I..? Oh, yeah. So I was sitting there, trapped, rain pouring down. Luckily, a pair of twolegs found me. They took me to a strange twoleg, who decided it was best to cut my leg off. Probably for the best.” Soybean yawned. “The twolegs that rescued me took care of me. They gave me this collar,” He motioned towards the leather collar with metal spikes on it. ”Next thing I knew, I was trapped in a crate in one of those huge flying monsters. Then we arrived here. However, I've always loved the wild, so I decided I’d leave.” He twitched his ears. ‘Wonder what he thought about that.’

As he sat down, for the first time, Lion noticed Soybean's collar. So he was a kittypet? Who would've thought. He seemed too good of a hunter to be one of those pampered kits. The golden cat listened to the rest of the tom's story without interrupting, although every now and then a few thoughts would run through his mind. What type of family would leave their kin out to die? Sure, Lion's parents... disappeared, but he always liked to think that they didn't have a choice in that matter. At least they'd never physically hurt him. And the twolegs - weren't all twolegs... well, they weren't evil, but... possessive? No, that wasn't the right word, either. They looked down on the cats, used them as playthings. Lion felt a chill up his spine upon remembering his last encounter with a monster. "Flying?" he echoed. "I didn't think monsters had wings. How did you escape the twolegs? I've never heard of a twoleg who'd let their cat leave." @FireSandwich

“I didn't so much escape. They let me leave. They knew I was a wild cat. They always let me outdoors whenever I wanted. They have a thing on their door that is like a smaller door...but for cats. Heck, I still visit them from time to time. He yawned. “Man, I have to get moving before this warm sunlight makes me fall asleep.” He tried to get up, but he couldn't stand very well and fell back down. ‘Ok, or...not.’ Soybean let out a sigh of annoyance. “Ah, well.” He then remembered Lion's other question. “You know those weird bird-looking things we sometimes see in the sky? The really loud ones? Those are flying monsters. Think my twolegs called them.... ‘planes’ if I remember correctly.” He rested his head on his paws. “I'm probably going to have to sleep here. My leg doesn't want to let me stand.” He twitched his tail, frustrated. ‘I slept out in the rain last night because of this stupid leg...now I’m going to have to sleep in the cold again....’

They... let him leave? Lion shook his head in amiable disbelief, but the golden tom didn't question it. He'd heard of weirder things happening. Compared to a foxy-pet, a half kittypet, half loner was nothing. As for flying monsters? Well, the moon and the sun stayed in the air somehow. Twolegs being slaves to sky monsters wasn't too farfetched. Soybean tried to get up and failed, leaving Lion to flick his tail at the other cat. "Feel free to stay as long as you want," the loner heartened. @FireSandwich
