Of Friends and Frog Hunting

Scorchpaw had been so excited that both Rosedapple and Flintfreckle had shown up. This little hunting excursion was going to be one of the BEST ever. After he had suggested to Rosedapple the extra marshy area of the territory where frogs liked to lurk, the crew had headed off that way, and Scorchpaw could not keep his excitement in check, the ginger tom was practically vibrating as he bounced along, much like a frog himself, impatient to get to the marsh and start the frog hunting. Scorchpaw already knew that this was going to be one of the best bonding experiences for all of them. And he was going to make sure everyone else knew that too.
"I think we're here." Scorchpaw suddenly meowed, coming to an abrupt stop behind a thick clump of ferns. He slowly creeped forward before peering over the edge, tail beginning to wave with excitement as he spotted the little splashes of the frogs moving about in the water below. "You all ready to have the time of your lives?" He meowed in an excited yell-whisper, meeting each cat's eyes of who had come with him.

“Always.” Blackpaw said shaking his fur out a bit for unknown reasons.

The white apprentice trailed behind Scorchpaw and Blackpaw, taking in the scents and sights of this part of the territory. He didn't think that he'd been before. It wasn't salty like the Waterbarn, but it was marshy. The ground was soggy beneath his paws, though he supposed that he would be getting much wetter than that, seeing that they would be catching frogs. He wondered if the other two apprentices knew how to swim. As Scorchpaw came to a sudden stop, Frostpaw peered past him and the thick clump of ferns. He could see ripples in the marsh water, then heard a wet splash as something leapt into the water, likely a smaller frog. The white apprentice grunted out a monosyllabic response at Scorchpaw's question, allowing a small smirk to make its way onto his maw. This would be very, very interesting.

Rosedapple chuckled at Scorchpaws energy. He was so cheerful, it was much better seeing him like this than during their talk during that one clan meeting. Finding some other cats his age to hang around with did him some good.

With a contented expression, the calico warrior spoke up.

"While we're here, be careful walking on the mud and muck. It can suck you in and make it really hard to get out. If that happens Flintfreckle and I will assist you." she flicked her tail in the other warriors direction.

Flintfreckle enjoyed the enthusiasm and cheerfulness of the apprentices. It had been awhile since he had had fun like he had since his apprentice days, and anticipation prickled at his paws. At Scorchpaw’s announcement he couldn’t help but smile. “This will be plenty of fun.” His tone changed to seriousness and he nodded solemnly as Rosedapple flicked her tail his way. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need assistance, and let’s stay within eye-sight of each other. If Rosedapple or I can’t see you, your too far.” Flintfreckle said, giving each apprentice a stern look that didn’t last. Then he looked at the frogs. “Is it Frog Hunting time?” He asked with a smile, looking over the apprentices. He wanted to go down there as a group, even if they couldn’t stay as one.

Seeing that everyone was on board and accounted for, Scorchpaw waggled his tail a bit, glancing between Rosedapple and Flintfreckle, before turning around to look at Blackpaw and Frostpaw. His eyes wide with excitement, the tomcat flicked his tail and let out an exhilarated whisper. "Let's goooooo!" Then he turned and bounded towards the pond, crouching low before he got near it, and then he splashed right into it, trying to catch a slippery frog he'd spotted. Water and frogs seemed to explode up around him as he splashed into the water. There were so many! It was that season for frogs, there were always a ton around this time, and this marsh was just teeming with them. Smiling brightly, Scorchpaw crouched before leaping for another frog, this time his claws catching in it's slimy flesh. He killed it quickly and flung it over onto a slightly drier part of the ground, waving his tail at the other cats with him. "Come on! It's amazing over here!" He then let out a small yowl of surprise as a frog hopped right into his face, desperately trying to get away from his constantly moving paws. As the frog hopped back away, Scorchpaw just let out a loud laugh, shaking his head.

Blackpaw smiled and leapt into the fray, accidentally landing in a frog. “Well this is almost too easy.” he said before killing the frog and throwing it in his own pile. “We could feed the whole clan like this.” he said leaping onto another one, killing it, and tossing it onto the bank.

The white tom watched as Scorchpaw and Blackpaw splashed into the water, waiting another second before wading into a shallower part of the marsh. It wasn't that he disliked frogs or water, but he wasn't very experienced at having fun. Frostpaw was personally hesitant to join in. It seemed very... unprofessional. Regardless of those thoughts, the white apprentice eyed a frog standing casually between the blades of wet grass, crouched down, and leaped. In turn, the frog made a loud croaking noise, then hopped straight up. Frostpaw slipped, his paws unable to stay still on the marshy ground, and quietly crashed into the soggy floor. He cringed at the feeling of mud soaking into his white fur, then unsteadily stood up, only for a thing to land on his back. Croak! Frostpaw blinked, processing the fact that a frog was standing on him, then whipped around, with a ferocious snarl. The amphibian croaked again, hopped off, and Frostpaw sunk his fangs into its slippery skin before coming to an unsteady stop, digging his paws into the watery mud. The white apprentice huffed, unceremoniously disposing of the creature onto the floor with a splash. He could bring it up to the bank later. And this, he thought wryly to himself, is why I contemplated staying in ThunderClan. No one ever went frog-hunting there.

Under normal circumstances, Rosedapple would get on Scorchpaw for the boisterous antics in the midst of a hunt. But this was for fun, just as much as it was good training one how to handle a staple prey animal to the clan.

And ok--splashing in the murky pond water and getting all dirty was fun while young. Rosedapple chuckled as the frogs went everywhere, bouncing in the air like oversized crickets.

"As much fun as it sounds to try and hunt enough frogs to feed everyone in the clan I'd advise against it. Hunt enough, but leave plenty to breed and create new life for us to eat." she explained.

"We never want to over hunt what new-leaf and green-leaf gives us."

Flintfreckle watched the apprentice’s bound off and smiled after them. “Be careful!” He reminded them as they dove into the swampy-muddy-water. As Rosedapple spoke, he nodded along with her words. “Yes! What Rosedapple said.” Flintfreckle laughed, giving the other warrior a sly look. “Come on! This is supposed to be fun let’s go down.” He told her, charging down after the apprentices. He felt happy and free for the first time since Sagedust’s death, and he was not about to have it ruined by anything. Seeing his apprentice fighting with a frog, he waded over with a smirk. “I’m glad you won your fight against the frog.” He mewed with a grin. “I’m kidding. This is supposed to be fun! Loosen up.” Flintfreckle told Frostpaw, grabbing his frog and throwing it on a bank before looking around, eyes alight with joy. He motioned to a clump of ferns by the bank. “There’s more over there.” He whispered to Frostpaw.
