Skye had been laying awake all night. Her only sense of time came from the alarms and the rigid, endurance-breaking schedule. She sat up slowly, letting her blood vessels in her brain repressurize.
She'd lost count of the days they had kept her locked up in here. The cell was cold, like a chamber made to freeze her very blood- in a slow, agonizing process.
Like every other test they put her under.
Still, she wouldn't give up hope.
Hidden behind a rag tucked into a crack in the wall, there was a little mural she had painstakingly drawn.
It was a simple yellow sun beaming down on a beautiful green-leafed tree, with a bed of bright green grass below it.
It would look like a child's drawing to any average person, but that was because Skye had never seen the sun, or trees, or grass.
Only in dreams did she have faint glimpses of these beautiful, foreign things.
The only way she could ever see them in reality was to push through this, and find a way to get out.
The first step in doing so?
Surviving.
