➸ buzzardpaw
buzzardpaw had fallen asleep when the moon was the highest.
tonight was a night where she would not explore, tonight was a night where she'd sleep peacefully.
or so she thought.
she awoke with weak attempts for breathing, an overwhelming feeling of suffocation starting to take over her. her eyes shot open to stare up at the deep, dark - almost black - crimson sky. (this was not shadowclan, no, this was some place terrible.) her paws curled inwards to pull at her throat while she continued to stare at the bloody sky with glazed over eyes, and finally - she could breathe, small chest heaving and rattling as she wheezed and coughed and inhaled. she rolled onto her side, shivering slightly as she noticed just how cold it was..where ever she was.
she curled in on herself for a moment before pushing forcing herself to stand up. she slowly turned her head side to side, looking around. tall, dark, rotting trees loomed over her as her eyes landed on the only source of light she could spot. that light? a big, red moon in the sky - shining red light onto the trees, ground, and even the apprentice herself - pelt red in every spot the light hit. it was almost..captivating, unnerving too. she was sure this was a dream, she remembered falling asleep, but the dread building up inside of her was too real for her liking.
the sound of a twig snapping made her whirl around, squinting around and trying to spot something in the darkest parts of the forest. she opened her mouth to call out, but couldn't. the words wouldn't come out, and as she tried to force them, her throat grew tight and she could barely breathe - feeling like she'd suffocate, similar to when she first woke up. she began to grow nervous, growing anxiety mixing with the dread inside of her and she'd spin around to the direction of the moon only to be shoved down, landing on her back with wide eyes.
nothing.
nobody was there, no cat, no large animal - but fear drilled inside of her and she stayed on the ground, chest quickly rising up and down with uneven breaths. something was very wrong, she could feel it. suddenly a paw appeared right above her head, long and sharp claws glinting in the red moonlight. her eyes trailed up the paw, bending her neck slightly just to be met with a horrid sight.
a thin, brown cat who's eyes seemed to be popping out of their head - one ear gone and chunks of flesh gone, bone exposed. their pelt clung to their bones and they were practically a skeleton, staring right at her like a predator would its prey.
buzzardpaw scrambled to get up, bolting in a random direction once she did, just to get away from that (what looked like one, anyways) dead cat. she didn't know where she was going - weaving through trees that seemed to have branches that were reaching out to grab her, stumbling over sticks and stones, looking on both sides of her - she swore she saw the cat a few fox lengths away from her whenever she looked to the side of her. she gulped, legs and lungs burning as she pushed herself to run faster.
too busy glancing around, she felt herself collide into something large, toppling over it and landing face first. she let out a silent cry, inching away and looking to see that she had fallen over a rotting log with..maggots crawling all over it. hesitantly, she glanced down, watching in horror as maggots squirmed on top of her, more seeming to appear with every second that passed. she wanted to scream, call out for anyone to come find her, for that cat to go away - but she couldn't. her paws began to feel numb, struggling to lift one and try to swipe the maggots off of her.
looking up, she could see the monster of a cat stalking towards her. despite the numbness in her limbs, she pushed herself back, attempting to put space between her and the cat.
"corrupted little bird," they rasped out, jaw looking like it'd fall off when the cat spoke up. "corrupted little bird, you are such a terrible thing." the dead cat said, continuing to pad towards buzzardpaw despite her attempts to back away. this cat was wrong - she wasn't terrible. right? "your heart is filled with hate," they said, now standing right over the calico. "you are a cat with a heart full of hate - a cat who is weak.." they trailed off, staring down at her with those terrible eyes. "you will forever be weak." buzzardpaw was sure the ground was melting beneath her as the cat spoke, watching them raise a paw, long and sharp claws unsheathed, suddenly swinging down at her.
gasp
she found herself staring at the entrance of the apprentices den.
