Golden Flower Pack Territory: next to the west border of Crashing Waves Pack; located in a meadow with a forest surrounding the north, east, and west border

Crashing Waves Pack Territory: near the east border of the Golden Flower Pack; located in the forest with the south border stretching down to the cliffs overlooking the beach

No-Tail Territory: home to the Collar-Dogs who spend their lives living with No-Tails

Cave of Spirits: a gigantic cave with a chunk of quartz in the middle, where the two Packs hold their Star Meetings and the alphas and deltas go to share their knowledge

Prologue

Ripple stared into the dark entrance of the Cave of Spirits, thinking about the prophecy he and Duskmoon had received just the other morning. Maybe it meant nothing. Maybe it was just a dream. Maybe-

"Come on, Ripple, we've got a Star Meeting to get to, so move it!" Silver's deep, irritated growl shook Ripple from his thoughts, and he muttered, "Sorry." as he walked into the cave.

The Crashing Waves Pack was already there, and their alpha and delta, Blazemoon and Cliff, we're sitting patiently, waiting for Ripple to lead his Pack next to the chunk of quartz. The Golden Flower delta leaped onto the chunk of quartz, and confused growls and barks echoed throughout the large cave.

"What's the meaning of this, Ripple?" Blazemoon rumbled. "Where is Duskmoon?"

"Duskmoon was not able to come to this Star Meeting," the sire-wolf explained, dipping his head respectfully at the higher-ranking wolf. "He has come down with an illness that has yet to be identified."

"I see," Blazemoon said, narrowing his eyes. "How sick is he?"

"Not very seriously," the delta uffed hurriedly. "He'll most likely be up and about in a few sunrises."

"Good," Cliff growled, his brown coat fluffed up. "Now can we get on with this Meeting? The night is cold. No one wants to be out here long." With a nod from Blazemoon, the Crashing Waves delta tipped his head back and howled. The cave went silent.

Ripple stepped back to let Blazemoon go first, and the large sire-wolf gave him a grateful nod.

"The Crashing Waves Pack is doing well," he said, standing at the edge of the quartz. "Although the white-season came early, the deer and elk are still roaming our part of the forest. And once they leave, the lemmings and voles will still be plentiful. Though, not as tasty," he added with a bark of laughter. Chuckles echoed around the crowd.

"A pup has currently been made a trainee and been assigned as a combatant to Bark," the Crashing Waves Pack alpha continued once it went quiet. "Reed, stand up please."

A small red brindle sire-wolf stood, managing to look nervous but proud at the same time. The two packs began to chant his name. "Reed! Reed! Reed!"

After it went quiet, Blazemoon continued once more. "And Holly has just given birth to two pups, Coal and Crab." The alpha stepped back, signaling with a flick of his fluffy tail that Ripple could now speak.

The blue roan stepped forward, his blue eyes sparkling. "As you may already know, Duskmoon could not make it tonight," he barked. "He's fallen ill with a sickness that we haven't yet identified." He blinked as Cliff rose from sitting position.

"I'll come over tomorrow," he offered. "How does high-blaze sound?" Ripple nodded his thanks. "It sounds perfect. Thank you, Cliff." He turned back to the crowd.

"Other than that, Golden Flower is doing fine. Our senior combatant, Blizzard, has recently joined Wolverine to become and elder wolf. His service as a combatant will be missed, but he is still a part of the Pack. And he will be greatly respected," Ripple finished. Blizzard had been highly popular between the two Packs, always making a spectacle that the others would enjoy.

"I declare this Star Meeting over," Ripple concluded. "Let's go home." As he gathered his wolves around him, the omen flashed through his mind again.

"Water will clash with fire, and the forest will be washed away in a river of blood..."

Chapter 1
Six cycles later...

Brook tumbled across the meadow camp with her brothers, Birch, Barley, Hawthorne, and her sister, Carnation. The five were inseparable, always huddled in a large group, discussing the next big prank to pull on the combatants.

"Come on, guys, over here." Brook lead them behind the combatants' den, her brown brindle tail wagging happily. The stars shone above them, and the moon cast a silver glow on the green grass of the Golden Flower Pack.

The littermates crouched behind the den. It wasn't much of a den, really. just a rock overhang with a bit of lichen hanging down from the ledge. Brook clambered up and blinked her blue eyes at her siblings. "Did anyone come up with any good ideas?" she asked excitedly.

Birch straightened, his green eyes shining. "I did," he whispered. His light brindle coat looked more silver as he walked up the overhang and whispered in his sister's ear. She grinned a wolfish grin, and turned back to her littermates. "Birch says we can go get some fox scat from the forest and put it in Duskmoon's nest," she uffed excitedly. "The scent from the scat will cover up our scent, so he'll never know it was us."

Barley tilted his head, his dark green eyes glittering. "But don't we have to go out into the forest to get some?" he asked. "Isn't that against the rules?"

"We're four cycles. dummy," Carnation yapped. "That means we can go out of camp."

"Yes, but even so, we aren't trainees yet," Barley argued. "And it's against the rules for non-trainees to go out of camp without a combatant."

"Is not."

"Is too!"

"Is not!"

"Is too!'

"Stop arguing!" Brook growled, making the two pause and look up. "At this rate, everyone from here to the mountains will here you if you don't shut up!"
