Someone needs me

“Mmm-aa.”

A cow bellowed as 10-year-old Kaylie slowly dropped a metal bucket. The water sloshed violently, sliding out of the bucket and on to her old leather boots. Squinting, she looked up into the glaring blue sky.

“Relax,” it murmured, “Lay down and stay with me a while.”

Kayli shook her head, “I can’t. A cow needs me.”

Then she brushed the hair from her sweaty forehead and picked up the bucket. She walked through tall whispering grasses that said, “Here it is cool, and our arms will sooth your aching body.”

But Kaylie longingly looked down at their waving fingers and said, “No. A cow needs me.”

Quickly she leaped across racing streams. “Won’t you wait with us a minute. The sun is so hot out there,” they giggled.

“No, I won’t,” the girl said, “A cow needs me.”

Running now she struggled to keep the bucker from brushing and banging against her leg. A lilting, calming breeze soothed her, droning, “I am all there is. Don’t worry about other things.” The girl turned her face to the wind.

“You aren’t all there is. A cow needs me.”

Over hills and through valleys she rushed, up to the bright sky and down to the darkness. Finally, her own body begged, “Give me rest.”

“Not yet,” the girl panted, “A cow needs me.” In a mad panic now, she pushed on until she came to a flower-filled meadow. Surrounded by daises and roses she flew up to an old brown cow.

Careful now, she let the bucket fall gently, so lovingly to the flower-clad ground. The cow, her dark eyes filled with hope, nosed her way to the metal bucket. With life-giving gulps, the cow drank the cool water and when she was done, the girl kissed her wet nose and whispered, “I can’t stay long. Someone needs me.”
