Apparently Smokepaw's previous mentor had been wholly incompetent, only completing a tour of the territory with her. The large tom huffed as he made his way from the warriors den. How he had hoped that she would be on the same level as Dizzypaw already, though he supposed that she was no too far behind. He definitely needed them both to move faster than Rosepaw. If either of them failed to get their warrior names before that little brat...
"Smokepaw, lets go!" Flintclaw called into the apprentice den. He wondered if his other apprentice was also relaxing in their. That would change soon enough. He needed to complete Dizzypaw's Battle training. Which he would have to do for Smokepaw as well, at some point. Ugh, he really hoped that Rosepaw would forget about the large predator training he had promised. He would definitely be completing that training for Dizzypaw and Smokepaw, though.
The half-mainecoon stalked across the clearing, only checking back to make sure Smokepaw was behind him. Once he had ensured that, he trotted out of camp with her. He knew he needed to find a good spot to get her to learn. The general territory was never a bad option.

Smokepaw jumped up. Finally! She thought excitedly. I hope my new mentor will actually teach me things! Smoke looked at Flintclaw, and nodded. Ok. She mewed softly. What's first?

Well, at least this brat seemed to be more relaxed than Dizzypaw. It would be quite interesting when he put them both together to train in something.
Flintclaw trotted along as he looked for a good clearing. "You said the only thing your sorry excuse for a mentor before had done was a territory tour, correct?" He asked, glancing back at the apprentice as he slowed at the center of a sunny clearing. It would be a good place for sunbathing. He didn't really wait for Smokepaw to reply. "Since that's the case, we will start with hunting. Show me your hunter's crouch, then stalk, then pounce." He instructed, sitting to watch.
Smokepaw nodded. Yes sir. She mewed. He was going to teach me more, but... well, you know.
Show me your hunter's crouch, then stalk, then pounce.
Oh boy. Smoke tried to copy the crouches that she'd seen the other apprentices do. She squatted low to the ground, her belly fur brushing against the grass. Slowly walking forward, she stalked the best she could. Her tail moved nervously, and she stepped on a couple of dry twigs that snapped under her feet. She then pounced on an imaginary piece of prey. Looking up at FLintclaw, she smiled nervously. How was that?

It was... a display. Of sorts... Flintclaw analyzed the young cat's form, her fur brushing the ground, her tail flicking, stepping on twigs... Stars, and she asked him how she did? Oh, stars... Should he even bother telling her 'how she did'? No.
"Get your belly fur off the ground. Lift yourself up into a balanced crouch. You want to stay low, but if your belly fur brushes the ground, you'll alert your prey." He said coolly, narrowing his eyes. "You'll also alert prey if your tail keeps flicking every which way and hits anything... and you can glance at the ground while you hunt to make sure you aren't stepping on anything, just don't lose sight of your prey." He growled. "Do it again."
At least he didn't criticize her pounce. That part had no issues.
Smokepaw nodded. Yes sir! She mewed, before trying the crouch again. She crouched low, but made sure that her belly fur was far enough away from the ground. She focused on keeping her tail as still as she could, and avoided as many twigs as she could. She winced as she stepped on a leaf, and it made a small crackling noise. As she pounced, her foot caught on a root, sending her toppling to the ground. Her nose filled with dust, and she sneezed furiously. She looked up at Flintclaw guiltily. I-I should probably try that again, huh? She mewed. Can you show me how you do it?

Wow, what do you know. This one can actually ask questions that are helpful for her.
Flintclaw stood and shook out his pelt leisurely. He didn't bother answer her question of doing it again. Of course she would be doing it again. That was a given and she needed to figure that out. "Fine," He replied, slipping into a crouch.
"My stance is low and balanced with nothing rubbing against the ground," He explained before stalking forward. "When I move, I shift the weight on my paws to stay balanced. My eyes are trained on my prey, but I will stay aware of what is around me so I don't brush or step on anything to give away my position." He spoke low and soft, as though he was actually hunting and didn't want his position given away. "And when I'm ready, I pull my back legs in and tense up to aim, then... just..."
The massive tabby leaped into the air, quick as a flash, and landed on a leaf. He dug his claws into the leaf, ripping it to shreds. Then he looked back at Smokepaw. "Then just land a bite on it's neck to kill it." He said before sitting again. "Now do it." He ordered. He couldn't remember breaking it down into so many pieces... Did he have to do that for Dizzypaw? He wasn't sure.
Smokepaw nodded, and carefully copied Flintclaw's steps. She crouched carefully, and slowly stalked forward, careful not to do anything that would alert her prey. She then leapt, and landed hard on a small rock, which was her "prey" She presented to shred it up, but since it was a rock, it remained in it's usual rock form. She looked up proudly at her mentor. Did I do it right?

The dark tabby watched carefully as his apprentice moved. She had made a motion to shred the rock she landed on, as he had done to the leaf. Doing it to the exact motion he had shown her. There was a slight wonder if she would do that to actual prey, possibly ruining fresh-kill, but he doubted it. Surely, the apprentice had seen plenty of prey that had not been shredded as he had done to the leaf.
Flintclaw nodded slowly. "Yes, that looked fine." He replied. He sniffed the air, tail flicking as he sought out the scent of prey. There were birds and squirrels nearby, at least. "Go catch something. Doesn't matter what, just catch some prey and bring it back here." He instructed. How long might she take on this? He was quite curious to see her in action.
